given a choice between salvation which is free, to be received with joy and thanksgiving,
and a reward that must be worked for, along with a list of strict regulations and rules, long checklists of do's and don'ts, a measuring stick with which to judge ones self against others
mankind overwhelmingly rejects the free gift, and pursues the unattainable. even with full knowledge that it is unattainable, the human prefers that thing whereby he may judge others, and himself, as unequal, glorying in his works and puff, forming inquisitions & condemning all who do not match his own ignorant view of himself.
as though the mercy of God is a zero-sum game, the Jacks of the world come-a-mocking and accusing, subtextually glorying in themselves. here is the sin of Sodom: pride.
yet men prefer such rubbish, proudly, instead of submitting to a righteousness that is not of themselves. such self-achieved righteousness, a vanity of mere behaviour modification, in itself, is also sin.

remember Lot's wife
the one who hates even his own life, and who loses it for Christ's sake, is the one worthy of Him - but only one is worthy, the Lamb that was slain and rose again. so then, who is worthy without Him? and it is only in Him that anyone is worthy, because all worth comes from Him; He's my everything, and all righteousness that comes from ourselves is nothing but rot and flotsam.
yet men prefer such rubbish, proudly, instead of submitting to a righteousness that is not of themselves. such self-achieved righteousness, a vanity of mere behaviour modification, in itself, is also sin.
