But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. Acts 6:4

Of coarse believe, though when reading know that there are places that don't quite fully explain things properly, such as some may believe "Mary Magdalene" had a middle name or even a last name though the proper translation is,

Mary of Magdala, Mary the Magdalene, Mary a Magdalene or Mary from Magdala... IMO

When we buy a new vehicle it comes with a book on how to take care of it. The Bible is Gods Word and is our "book" on how to take care of our life. If we dont need the Bible then God would not have given it to us.

Just my thought on our life "guidebook".
My brother, we don't need an owner's manual in order to drive a car, we need a license. We don't need the Bible to be saved, we need Jesus. However, when something goes wrong with the car, reading up on it helps us overcome the problem; reading the Bible has the same effect and more so regarding our lives and relationship with God.

I think that the Bible is only meant as a guide book and PARENTS are supposed to teach their children the proper values to build a foundation on.

It may sound extreme but it seems that people that say that the Bible is necessary do so because they use it as part of a ritual, doesn't God advise against rituals and idolatry?

If you believe that the Bible is necessary to be a good decent person which I believe is all that God is asking for then you are probably also worshipping dead saints, isn't that idolatry?

It's great that people take comfort from reading the Bible but I don't think that is supposed to be a crutch that supports you all of your life,if you use a crutch then your morals and beliefs may become atrophied look at the southern US it is home to what's called "the Bible belt" because there are so many self professed Christians there it is also one of the most racist places in the entire world.

Im no genius or saint ,I was just taught moral values by my parents so some situations where people are perplexed are a no brainer for me ,that's how it should be for everyone but it isn't because it's not being taught by the parents.

I could be wrong this is just what I've seen from not being part of society,I've sat back and watched it deteriorate.
Regarding racism in the South, think of how much worse it would be if folks there were not Christian. And for the record, the North is just as racist as anywhere else in America, but the racism is more subtle and deceptive. Don't want to derail this thread, so if anyone wants to discuss race any further then start another thread.

This thread really has such flow.Everyone has been so nice so far.So Im going to try not to be the one to get a fire started. But how can you know the doctrines found in the Bible, such as Jesus being God and man,if you do not read and meditate on the Bible?
Or at least like, have someone share with you the teachings of the Bible.
The Bible is needed, without it it would be hard for us to be able to teach about Jesus and what He gave to us : p We may not need to know every verse of the Bible, and of course the act of reading it daily wont save you. But it is needed for our salvation, as everything that we need to be saved is recorded in it : p

Maybe one should read and apply the words of truth before the problem arises.:)

True that, yet be that as it may, our salvation does not come from the Bible.

For the record, I read Scripture every day. I'm not boasting, I'm giving Jesus His due by stating that our salvation is in Him alone.

So let me throw some stats into the mix. These come from the Barna group concerning Evangelical Christians:

19% are living with a partner outside marriage

37% do not believe the Bible is totally accurate

45% do believe Jesus was sinless

52% do not believe satan is real

57% do not believe Jesus is the only way to eternal life

Does that change or confirm how you feel about reading the Bible?

Does the state America is in reflect these beliefs?

Of course having the Bible doesnt save us as we know that Jesus is the only way. I feel that due to who we are as a creation we do need the Bible. But i do understand what you are saying.

As an argument this is actually a good one. I personally feel if we didnt "need" the Bible then God wouldnt have given it to us. God seems to think we need it so we have it. God explains why we have His Word in 2 Tim 3:16,17 so i personally think we do need it. So "that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work".

I do read and meditate on the bible, when i first came to Christ, i did not read or know anything though, and i was saying that i know people who know the word yet they refuse to do what is commanded. Some people live in their bibles, yet the moment they step outside they become like the rest of the world... I also know some people who only read the bible so they can have debates and try to win arguments. The bible is indeed the Holy Word of God, and it is meant to be read and lived out and applied to a persons life.

It would blow our minds to find out how many think they're going to heaven with pre-meditated, unconfessed , unrepented sin.

My best guess is about 75%.

Yeah, we're that close.

Folks seem to believe some things are good & right, until you say, "Pray, & tell God that, & see what He thinks about it." Then they usually say "Oh no, I can't do that".

I read this quote from the George Barna Research Group and it hit me how far we have come the true gospel of the grace of Christ.

This survey essentially said that 81% of Christians believe that Christianity is nothing more then going through the bible and finding a bunch of rules listed in the bible and trying our best to actually live by them.

How did we water down the true gospel of an exchanged life in Christ and learning to live by the life of Another in us now because we have died with Christ ( our old man was crucified with Him ) and have been raised up with Him to newness of life - how did it become so warped to reduce it down to the keeping of rules?

We are to live by the life of Christ in us - not by the keeping of rules. Jesus died "for" us so that He could live "in" us and that He could live "through" us.

This brand of religion is no different then buddhaism or any other good moral living religion.

Here is the link.

https://www.barna.org/barna-update/f...e#.VzhQsSfmqdI

The true gospel of the grace of God in Christ has been watered down to this religious rule-keeping works-based mindset instead of living from an exchanged life in and through us that is ours because of our union with Christ - a new creation in Him.

Well in order to get that license you need to know the rules of the road & road signs. Correct one doesn't need the bible to be saved but you need to know the rules in which case are the laws/commandments. Otherwise like driving a car you will get in a wreck with no knowledge of the rules

I think it shows that just because we call ourselves christian does not make it so.

and no. It would not change my view.. The pharisee could quote scripture verbatim, It did him no good to know the word.. (he did not really know it)

Amen to what you have shared, brother. And I understand you did not write the above highlighted words, but those words were indeed stated by someone else on this thread so that's why I made it a point to clarify things.

And if you wreck, you are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not the Bible.
