Matthew 7:12
“In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

In another thread someone was asking about the Law being abolished or fulfilled. In another scriptures the Lord says loving God and our neighbor is the essence of all of the Law and the Prophets.

And then I came upon this scripture tonight and thought I'd share it as a separate thread. What caught my eye is the 'In everything' and the word ’people' as opposed to brothers or brethren.

It made me consider that in everything I'm to treat everyone in the same way I want them to treat me.

I guess this one caught my attention because my default verse is love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself for this fulfills the Law and the prophets.

Looking at this other scripture kind of gives me a fresh look at this, even though it's saying the same thing, only a little different. And I thought it might help all of us when there's lots of disagreeing and arguing going on.

We can continue to disagree and treat others with respect, even if they believe differently or even if we perceive they might be an unbeliever, or even an heritic.

I was thinking how great it would be if I can move past hurt feelings and move past condemning others on here because they don't agree with me. Because even if I don't post anything, I can have some bad thoughts and my heart is impure.

I got to thinking about the higher purpose for discussion. One thing I considered is that my words are to glorify God - all my words.....and my thoughts.

Also, it's to bring grace to the hearers.

And it's also to sow seeds of truth so that others might either come to know the Lord or that they might offer help to someone at an opportune time. Like a divine appointment or a word of wisdom or a word of knowledge.

Words are powerful - they can kill or bring life. We need to bring life to one another. We're hurting so many here, and we're family. Or maybe a prospective family member.

Let's remember that words can be like throwing stones that can injure and even kill. James asked, "Who can tame the tongue?" The conclusion is that the Holy Spirit has the power to tame our tongues.

Maybe it's time to take a break no allow the Holy Spirit to speak to each one of us. He loves us and is gentle.

Yes I agree and hope that those who persistently resort to 'name-calling will take note ! Words hurt !

Loving one another is the sign that you are regenerate, if you make fun of other Christians, talk down to them or make yourself better than them, I question your heart and if it's regenerate.

I can't judge the heart, but I can judge their doctrine by the Word of God.

yeah jesus said he came to fulfill the law not change it as many expected he would and yes you are indeed right about in everything treat others as you would want to be treated or might I add what else Jesus said unto his disciples "love each other as I have loved you" that we should care for one another and love our neighbors as our selves alas this is easier said than done I myself struggle constantly with this especially with family because we are to bring each other up in spirits yet many still remain in parts of my family who seek to tear down each other spiritually and lash their tongues in defiance of god yet we are still to try to sway them with kindness, anger but sin not when unavoidable and this to me is perhaps the toughest commandment of all for that reason, especially when many care not to listen to the truth, they say things like "don't preach to me" for they can't even forbear the truth let alone hear it clearly, well jesus never said it would be easy I say smile and care til they can't stand it lol it's not easy but we should all try to care anyways for it is written better to try and fail than to do nothing and succeed.

Hi Beta,

I feel you pain. When I first got on here I had a
barrage of stones hurled at me. And it really hurt because when you come to a Christian forum, you expect more from believers in the Lord.

But we need to forgive others even when__________(fill in the blank). Sometimes we can get caught up into the discussion and let our emotions take over.

It's good to be reminded...... because God has poured out His love into our hearts, we need to remove the barrier that's blocking the flow of His love pouring out from our heart towards others, especially when they hurt us.

The challenge is for us to speak the truth in love. I know when I'm not because the Holy Spirit tells me when I'm responding out of the flesh, even in my thoughts. Focusing on those two greatest commandments is where we need to camp out. We're so caught up sometimes on the bible says this and the bible says that and we're leaving the 2 foremost commandments hidden and buried somewhere.

Hi Johnny,

Yeah, it's not so much the judging that's wrong, it's the fact that we're condemning others with unkind words and with a heart of hate. Sometimes we're being superficial and judging on the appearance of
something without really knowing what's going on. Other times someone's harsh just because they've had a bad day. Some here are here just for the sake of argument.

I'm just thinking we can do better and make sure that we've clothed ourselves in the love of Christ before we respond. And maybe it's time to use the ignore list or use it more often for those who are caustic.

What is the EE-TEOW?

Hi Joe,

Yeah family can be difficult. One thing that always helps me with unbelievers is that I use to be one of them. And what if no one ever loved me into the kingdom.

What I realized is that if I focus on the loving part, it becomes easier through prayer and with the desire to please the One I love.

This love of which I speak is slow to lose patience—it looks for a way of being constructive. It is not possessive: it is neither anxious to impress nor does it cherish inflated ideas of its own importance.

Love has good manners and does not pursue selfish advantage. It is not touchy. It does not keep account of evil or gloat over the wickedness of other people. On the contrary, it is glad with all good men when truth prevails.

Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. It is, in fact, the one thing that still stands when all else has fallen. J.B. Phillips version.
