it was his death on the cross, the earthquake that opened the tombs of the saints as they walked out. the temple being split down the middle., day turning to darkness.

The interesting thing about concluding "this generation" has to mean TODAY, is that you are having every single generation since Jesus (50 of them) believing it was THEIR generation..... and you will have every generation that comes after you are long dead and buried, thinking it is going to be THEIR generation..... for the next 10,000 years, or more.

Jesus was pretty plain in saying, about The Day of The Lord, "No man will know the time.", so what on earth would He be doing trying to make people think they can know He was talking about the specific time of His return?

It is so obvious He was describing events SOON to come within the listeners' lifetimes... as they DID in 70AD.

Amen, even Jesus said he didn't know the day or hour of that day but only God the Father.

I have always looked at Matthew 24 as duel in application, both for that specific generation, and also he specifically makes reference of his return and gathering of his elect from the four winds......which the four winds meaning are found in scattered prophecy. I believe Jesus was much deeper than we really grasp and his words have layers as we grow through our time seeking after his depth.

The disciples FIRST asked when the destruction of the temple would occur, and then they asked when Christ would return. Jesus told them when the destruction would occur, in THAT generation, however he did not tell them when He would return, except He gave signs. So when Jesus described the abomination of desolation(about the temple) and telling His disciples to run for their lives, He had to be describing the first event, the destruction of the temple. It is interesting that Revelation mentions no abomination of desolation. I think the reason that Jesus said that He would return after the tribulation is because the tribulation had event one that involved Israel only, and event two that involves the entire world.

yep I think there is a duality of application there in that section of scripture, parts referring to the coming destruction of Jerusalem, and the temple destruction years later under Rome, and also he specifically references the return and gathering of the elect.

Congratulations to the OP for introducing a very interesting topic, one that really focuses on understand the text and its context!

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? AND what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?( 2 questions one regarding the temoles destruction, the other the signs of the end)
4And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.5For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. 6And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. 8All these are the beginning of sorrows.<<< ( reference to signs of the beggining of the end)

9Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. 10And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. 11And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. 12And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. <<<(paul refers to this as well) 13But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. 14And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in ALL THE WORLD<<< ( after the destruction of jerusalem, the jews were dispersed into all the world) for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. ( again the end signs)

...v29Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: ( what happens many times in prophecy regarding the last day) 30And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.(<<< the return of Christ and gathering of the elect from the four winds)

ect...... duel in application because the question is 2 fold. Jesus is operating above us, and His word is actively growing in us. the bible is huge on something after, being based on the pattern beforehand one of the most consistant aspects of scripture. ive always looked at it as the pattern of what happened to jerusalem, will happen again on a world wide scale in the end.

regarding the patterns im saying moses was an astoundingly accurate pattern for Jesus, the Law a pattern for the gospel, the gospel a pattern for the apostles, Jesus a pattern for us who are called to be " his body" on earth and to look at Him as our example, the isrealites in the desert delivered from slavery in egypt a patter for us delivered from slavery to sin, in our "desert of sin"......

i think the depth of the word is never fully grasped by any one of us, or a group even, but it truly is a living peice of us. as we grow in knowledge and understanding, so does our perception moving from a realm where we begin in the flesh, so our understanding is human in nature, as we grow it becomes deeper because were being filled by the spirit as we take it in.....i truly think this is a duel teaching both applicable to those of that specific generation, and also applicable to Jesus return and the end of days and all generations between.

in ch 25, we see more about His return in Glory when all nations are gathered before Him to receive the kingdom, or the wrath. and also His tough lessons for some about being watchful that also apply no matter what generation we are in. i think its designed by God to be that way, and as willy points out, theres no possibility of "figuring out" when He will return, and the lesson is that we should always be prepared for the day we give our account before him, because when we die in this life, thats it for us anyways and it coulkd be tomorrow or a hundred years, but he is assuredly coming back for those who put thier faith in him.

This should start a lot of discussion. Matt 24:34 this generation shall not pass until till all these things be fulfilled. Matt 23 and 24 tell us plainly from the context that Jesus was speaking of the generation that was living at the time He made that statement. So why do folks say that Jesus was speaking of a future generation? The answer to that is simple, it could be called a concession teaching because the actual teaching does not line up with what most folks consider reality. In other words, we can all see that the context points to Jesus speaking of the people living at that time, however we can also see that Jesus did not return in the sky and gather the church, so as a concession, we go against the actual context in order to make the words fit with what we know(Jesus has not returned). I take a little different position, I would rather believe that when Jesus said THIS generation that He actually meant the generation living at that time.
I would also rather believe that when Jesus said ALL, that He was only referring to what happened to Israel around 70ad, because all that Jesus said would happen to Israel in that generation did in fact happen to Israel in that generation. The actual return of Christ and the end of the age was yet in the future.

Hello samuel23 and all,

Matt.24 is speaking in regards to all of the signs that would take place leading up to His return to the earth to end the age, which takes place in Matt.24:29-31. This event of the Lord returning to the earth to end the age is synonymous with Rev.19:11-21, which gives more detail of the Lords actual return to the earth.

"Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened."

Grammatically speaking, "this generation" is dependent upon "when you see all these things." Therefore, it is the signs that Jesus listed that identify the generation of when He would return to end the age. In addition, included in those signs is everything that is listed in Revelation regarding the events of wrath via the seals, trumpets and bowl judgments. All of the signs mentioned in Matt.24 must take place, as well as the events of wrath in Revelation. Needless to say, there has been no fulfillment of any of them.

Here is a paraphrase of what the scripture above is saying:

"Truly I tell you, this generation (the one where these signs take place) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened."

I would also rather believe that when Jesus said ALL, that He was only referring to what happened to Israel around 70ad

When Jesus said "every eye would see Him" He was speaking of when He returns at the end of the age to establish his millennial kingdom, which is what Matt.24 is leading up to. We know this because his disciples asked him the following question:

"
when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

The Lord's mention of the abomination in Matt.24:15 marks the middle of Daniels seven years and Matt.24:30-31 will take place 3 1/2 years after the abomination is set up, which is the end of the age.

"This generation" is the generation where those signs begin to take place, which leads to the end of the age.

Before Matt.24:30-31, which is when Jesus returns to the earth to end the age, all of the signs mentioned in Matt.24, as well as the seals, trumpets and bowl judgments, the plagues performed by the two witnesses, as well as all that is written regarding the beasts reign. The end of that is when every eye shall see the Lord descending from heaven, riding on that white horse with the armies of heaven following behind him, which will be those who will have previously been resurrected and caught up prior to the events of God's wrath, who are his "called, chosen and faithful followers." (Rev.17:14)

That said, before Jesus can return to the earth as described in Matt.24:30-31, the world will have to experience the following:

The gathering of the church from off the earth
The antichrist must establish his seven year covenant/agreement with Israel
The events of wrath via the seals, trumpets and bowl judgments must take place
The abomination must be set up in the temple in the middle of the seven years
The beast must make war and conquer the saints during that last 3 1/2 years
The mark of the beast must become mandatory as the only way to buy and sell
The 7th bowl must be poured out, which completes God's wrath
Jesus must descend from heaven with His called, chosen and faithful followers
The angels must go throughout the earth to gather the wicked to be killed (one taken)
The beast and the false prophet must be thrown alive into the lake of fire
That angel must gather all of the birds so that they can eat the flesh of all those at Armageddon
Satan must be thrown into the Abyss and restricted there during Christ's thousand year reign
The resurrection of the great tribulation saints
The sheep and goat judgment

Everything listed above and more must take place prior to and during Matt.24:30-31

Needless to say, none of those events above have yet taken place. The only event that took place in 70 AD was the destruction of the temple. But the major signs leading up to the Lord's return to end the age have not yet taken place.

Therefore, "this generation" was not referring to the generation that Jesus was living in, but the one where those signs begin to take place.

Anyone who says that Jesus was talking about a Generation living in a distant future is plainly going against Scripture, the English Language and common sense.

you have that exactly backwards tanakh!

"
Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.

In the scripture above, the example is that, when you see the trees blossoming you can know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see those signs begin to take place, then you can know that the end of the age is near. Therefore, the signs are what identify the generation that the Lord was speaking of.

By your interpretation, it forces the signs into Jesus' generation, which would get rid of the need to watch for the signs.

Regardless of your claims, you have no fulfillment of the signs of Matt.24 nor of the detailed events of wrath listed in Revelation, which also must take place during that time leading up to the Lord's return to end the age.

It is interesting that Revelation mentions no abomination of desolation.

Oh, but the abomination is mentioned in Revelation, not by name, but by discription:

"
Because of the signs he was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth. He ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed." (Rev.13:11-15)

That image that the false prophet has the inhabitants of the earth make in honor of the first beast, is the abomination, which will be set up in the holy place within the temple.

And those other generations had no right to make that claim and that because there have been zero events and zero fulfillment. This is the same thing that the previous generations have done with attempting to identifying the antichrist and that by ignoring all of the details written of him.

We are are the only generation that can rightfully make the claim that we are living in that last generation and that because we see the stage being set for the events that will take place during the time of God's wrath, which no other generation could make.

Mat 24:1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
Mat 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

This is all Jesus mentions concerning the overthrow of Jerusalem by the Roman Empire, and He said that in response to the disciples saying, look at these lovely building, and Jesus said, they are coming down,do not think they are anything special.

Mat 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
Mat 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Mat 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Mat 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
Mat 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

The things that happen on different places on earth, earthquakes, pestilences, famines, nation against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, can only be known if the saints can observe what the world is doing, which can only happen with advanced technology, for without that they have a very limited view, and knowledge of what goes on,even in a small radius of where they are at.

If there was not advanced travel, and technology, today, how much would you actually know of the world,to see and hear all these things that happen on different places on earth.

Dan 12:8 And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?
Dan 12:9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.

Dan 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

Daniel did not understand, and he was told to go his way,for the book was sealed unto the time of the end,for they will be able to understand in the end time, because of advanced travel, and advanced technology, for then they can view, and hear,of what the world is doing.

Mat 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

The saints shall be hated of all nations, not a few,but all nations, and again it is because of advanced travel, and technology, that they are able to communicate with each other, that they can come together, which will develope in to a kingdom that acknowledges no God,and is based on the occult, spiritual evolution through the power of nature.

Mat 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
Mat 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

God told us of the last generation that will curse their father, and not bless their mother, disobedient to parents, highly selfish, highly arrogant, aggressive towards each other, and will devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men,and the last days the same, and without natural affection for each other, promise breakers, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God,a lot of hypocrites, and terrible attitude among people, that will cause perilous times to come upon earth.

The attitude of the people of the world at that time, will cause the love of many to wax cold towards people, because people will not like each other that much when they are highly selfish, and highly arrogant, with a me attitude to heap all they can to themselves, with little regard for anyone else.

That attitude would of not been back at the first century to the degree that it is today, for iniquity was not as rampant as what we see today, and the attitude is different than what was even not too many years ago, before advanced travel, and technology, which they could not become as rich, and selfish, and arrogant, because of that,so people got along better with each other.

Philadelphia, the city of brothely love years ago,was in the top ten list for cities that do not like each other as much.A lot has changed since advanced travel, and technology, and the nature of people was always there to be selfish, and arrogant, but they could not achieve it until these last days where they can branch out farther, reach more people,to make money, and more money flowing especially in America, and they all scramble for the money, and material things, and to please themselves, and when the 1960's hit with the counterculture movement,it caused people to actually start separating themselves from each other, for it was a selfish movement of rebellion against authority.

They would of not been like that in the first century, but today they are,for since iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

Mat 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
Mat 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

The Gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world, not some of the world, but all of the world, for a witness unto all nations, not a few nations, but all nations, and then shall the end come, for the world has heard the Gospel, and now God can allow the man of sin to deceive all who do not love Him to follow the beast kingdom,so He can put them down, and end this sin business on earth.

Mat 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand)
Mat 24:16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
Mat 24:17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
Mat 24:18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
Mat 24:19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
Mat 24:20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

God will give the world 7 years to have their way to cause all who do not love Him to follow the beast kingdom.

The man of sin will establish peace in the Middle East, and the world will say Peace and safety, and the 7 years period will begin.

For the first three and one half years the world can repent of their sins, and be saved, the Jews will rebuild their temple, with no hassle from the Palestinians, and go back to animal sacrifices.

The world will operate by the ten horn kingdom, the world split in to ten sections with a leader in each section, but they will fail at obtaining peace on earth, government collapses, and they turn to the man of sin to help them solve their problems, who has been pushing the new age movement agenda of the harnessing of nature, for spiritual evolution.

When the world turns to the man of sin,he will enter the Jews temple, tell them to stop animal sacrifices, and he is their God and Messiah,so he as God will sit in their temple showing himself that he is God,and will place the abomination of desolation, for he will try to deceive the Jews, and he will persecute all who hold the testimony that Jesus is Lord and Savior,so all the believing Jews are to run and get away as fast as possible, and not go back to take anything out of their house, and pray that there is nothing that can slow them down, such as children,or winter time.

Mat 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Mat 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

The man of sin,the beast, has power to rule for three and one half years, and will persecute all who hold the testimony that Jesus is Lord and Savior, and except those days were shortened to three and one half years, there should no flesh be saved.

Mat 24:23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
Mat 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
Mat 24:25 Behold, I have told you before.
Mat 24:26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.
Mat 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Mat 24:28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

During the first three and one half years, the world will operate by a unified religious system, based on the new age movement, spiritual evolution through the power of nature, with a false interpretation of Christianity,Islam, and Judaism,to fit the format, and the man of sin pushes the new age movement, spiritual evolution, and all paths are valid for spiritual evolution, and will be the time the world will not endure the truth of the Bible, but according to their own lusts, and be turned unto fables, the imaginations of people, which is the new age movement.

Much spiritual deception, for there are many paths for spiritual evolution, many prophets, many teachers, and will set the world up for the coming beast kingdom, and the man of sin when he claims to be God through nature.

In the middle of the 7 years period, the man of sin will claim to have harnessed the power of nature, and achieved power, and the second beast will do great wonders in the sight of people to convince them that the first beast did receive power through nature, and shared this power with the second beast.

The great wonders that the false prophet does, and any other person that does them, will seem so real that if it were possibe it would deceive the elect, but it is not possible, for the elect knows it is not of God,and the Bible calls them lying wonders.

Because Israel rejected Jesus,God allowed the Roman Empire to overthrow Jerusalem, and scatter the Jews in to the nations.

God in the future is going to turn Israel as a nation to the truth that Jesus is their Messiah.

God said He is going to gather all nations together to go against Jerusalem, and then He will come back with all His saints, and fight against those nations as He did in the day of battle, and wil step down on the Mount of Olives, and defeat the world, which their flesh will melt off their bones, which when Jesus ascended to heaven after talking with His disciples, from the Mount of Olives, two men said,He would return the same way that He ascended, which Jesus will come back and step on the Mount of Olives,in which He will destroy the man of sin,and those that follow him, with the brightness of His coming, which will cause their flesh to melt off their bones.

The first attack on Jerusalem was because they rejected Christ.

The second attack on Jerusalem in the future is because they accepted Christ.

What Jesus said in Matthew 24 applies to what is going on now, with the advanced travel, and technology, the book of Daniel unsealed, for the saints can now understand things for they can view the world, and how they can come together as one,and the saints hated of all nations, the Gospel preached in to all the world, the new age movement, and all the spiritual deception about it,with many teachers, prophets, paths, and all valid for spiritual enlightenment, iniquity abounding causing many to not love each other, without natural affection.

Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
Mat 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Mat 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

The man of sin,the New Age Christ, will make war against the saints, and prevail against them, shall destroy the holy and mighty people, and they shall be given in to his hands for three and one half years, and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, the resurrection will happen, then the world will attack Jerusalem,Israel, the Jews, and Jesus will come back with all His saints, and fight the world and defeat them, and save Israel.

Matthew 24 is not about the first century, but the end time.

Because Tanakh ---- the disciples asked what the signs of the END of the AGE would be. Context is future. Not current.

[SUP]3 [/SUP]Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

the Greek word for "age" (aiónos in that verse) means age, era, time span, not the end of time itself.

it was denoting the end of the "Jewish age", if you will. that way of God dealing with His people.
you can see it when you read the whole passage in context. :)

I agree. Sometimes when we have been taught in our church teachings and traditions something for years on end. A stronghold becomes formed in our mind and if anything else comes up that is different from that - it's hard to accept that view.

Only the Holy Spirit can renew our minds to the things of God and reveal Christ to all of us and sometimes that takes time because we can think we are "defending the truth" but we could just be "defending our church teachings and traditions" instead.

All of us have this going on within us and we will until we leave this earth and get out of this earth suit we are currently in. Now we see through a glass darkly because of the infirmity of the flesh and the un-renewed mindset beliefs.

But then - we shall know even as we are truly known now by our loving Father and Lord. It's an endless adventure to find out how our Father and Lord really think of us now because we are one spirit with Them.

I have spent number of hours going through Matthew 23 and 24 - one cannot figure the context in chapter 24 without looking closely at chapter 23.

The questions that the disciples ask are subsequent to Jesus downloading on the Jewish leaders in chapter 23, some things that Jesus says at the end of chapter 23 when He laments for Jerusalem, and then His comments in the first couple of verses in chapter 24. If you were making a movie and this was part of your screenplay you would do this as a single scene.

Then, shortly afterwards, on the Mount of Olives, Jesus is approached by His disciples, and if we could translate the real thrust of their question into modern vernacular it would be "What on earth was that all about?"
Yes, in the narrative in Matthew the question is phrased in three parts, each neatly encapsulating three main things that they had just heard Jesus say.
The important thing to understand is that this was not an uber sophisticated question posed to Jesus to outline His big-picture eschatology, but rather a fairly shocked and rattled group of men asking Jesus to explain what just went down.
So to me there is a bit of disconnect between the disciples asking Jesus to explain His Pharisee bashing (most of chap 23), His reference to not seeing Jerusalem until they repent (Matt 23:39), and then His strange reference to the Temple being disarticulated (Matt 24:2), and the truly breathtaking answer that Jesus gives.
The disciples did not ask an eschatological question - but they sure got an eschatological answer!

So I think trying to impute to the disciples an eschatological motive for the question is not wise even if the answer Jesus gave was an eschatological bombshell!

This gives, I think, some biblical context to notmyown suggesting that jumping to an immediate eschatological meaning to the phrase from Matt 24:3 "the end of the age" probably does not stack up.

Furthermore, in reference to the OP I was fairly convinced that I would be able to confirm for him that a literal interpretation of "this generation" - in other words individuals that were alive at the time of Jesus - would fit.
I confined my efforts to the text of Matthew and I did not cross-reference my research with other books of the Bible. I wanted to see what the internal evidence as could be gleaned from the text of Matthew itself might say.

In summary, though, I could not escape the unmistakable reference to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and implications that obviously holds for exactly who is "this generation".
Although much of what Jesus did say takes place, or certainly starts, within the lifetime of Jesus hearers, and that generation, including the Siege of Jerusalem and the destruction of Temple, the persecution of believers, and the proclamation of the Gospel, unless we have missed something in history, the Second Coming is still outstanding.

So, ultimately, to ascribe a literal meaning to "this generation" - meaning those who were alive when Jesus walked the earth - doesn't really work as best I can stack the evidence.

I did discover a lot of other really interesting stuff in that research but I will leave that for another time.

Hello notmyown,

I would have to greatly disagree with you here and contend for the truth. The context bears out that the reference is to when Jesus returns to end mankind's rule on this earth and establish His kingdom. I reiterate that none of the events mentioned in Matt.24 nor the more detailed events of Revelation have been fulfilled.

In Matt.24:15, Jesus quotes Dan.9:27 regarding the setting up of the abomination. This marks the middle of that last seven years, with Matt.24:30-31 representing the Lord's return to the earth to end the age, i.e. the end of human governments and the beginning of Christ's thousand year reign.

"Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other."

Regarding the scripture above, it clearly states the "all the peoples of the earth will mourn." It is a distortion of scripture to attempt to interpret this as referring to the end of the Jewish age.

In the scripture above, we also have no fulfillment of the angels going throughout the earth and gathering the elect, which will consist of Israel who will have been cared for out in the desert for that last 1260 days (last 3 1/2 years) and those great tribulation saints who will have made it through the time of God's wrath and the beasts reign until Christ returns.

The above scripture is synonymous with Rev.1:7:

"Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.”
So shall it be! Amen.

All peoples on the earth would not be misconstrued as referring to only Israel, but is referring to the inhabitants of the entire planet!

Those who are believing and teaching this interpretation are aiding in the distortion of God's word.

A lot of interesting post, some very bias. The bible and history PROVES that Jesus was describing TWO events and not just one. I don't see how anyone can miss that part unless of extreme bias. Jesus described the terrible wrath of God that would occur against THAT generation(the ones who had rejected Christ) in Matt 23-24, including the destruction of the Temple, the disciples asked first, when shall these things be(wrath of God and destruction of temple). After the first question, the disciples asked about His return and the end of the age, Jesus answer all three questions in order. It is a fact of history that in that generation, the things that Jesus described HAVE OCCURED. Folks, reality should override ideology. In that generation the wrath of God was poured out terribly against Israel. The temple was destroyed, people had to flee out of Judea to save their lives. Exactly what Jesus said would happen in THAT GENERATION did happen in that generation, however the return of Christ and the end of the age did not occur because it is yet future. It seems that some of the events that happened in that generation are mixed in with some of the events that will happen at the end of the age.

I would offer from another perspective.

One thing I have been looking at is the use of the word generation and generations. The word generation denotes a beginning it is used in lieu of families as well as over all periods of time.

Interestingly in “Genesis”a word that comes from a Latin word that means “generation” as to a beginning…., the plural is used as in “generations, as to more than one beginning (Genesis 2:4). This was in respect to a finished work, when he was working (six days) I believe two beginnings, to include the new heaven and earth, the incorruptible that will come into view when the present corrupted vanishes out of sight on the last day.

Generation in respect to a beginning can mean the “generation of Adam”, natural unconverted man in so much that all in Adam all die, also called an evil generation or a generation of Vipers.

The scripture also speak of the “generation of Christ” or beginning of Christ in respect to His incorruptible seed in which all men as new creatures are born again by and through, called the generation of Christ.(Christians).Having met its fulfillment according to the spirit of resurrection, born after Mary in respect to the corrupted flesh

The book of “the generation of Jesus Christ”, the son of David, the son of Abraham.Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; Mat 1:1

In these “last days” or the New Testament era the last days or last times began at the renting of the veil when Christ said it was finished, indicating the end of temple worship coming from the fulfillment of seed Christ according to the genealogy. In effect not one stone was left upon another; the Holy of Holiest was no longer part of the worship ceremony. Literal stones I do not think were in view, the literal stones had no value when the veil was rent.

Today there is a portion of that wall that the Jews who reject the idea that Christ had come in the flesh they use the wall as an a idol .Literal stones have no value, other than in ceremonial laws. The veil was rent the reformation had come.

The reformation that had come restored the government of God to another time period. This is when God reigned by faith from heaven. And there was no visual earthly representative.

When Christ said this generation will not pass he was speaking of the generation of Christ in respect to that not seen. There will be Christians (the generation of Christ) with those who are not Christians as the generation of Adam right up until the end, the last day at that time all will be fulfilled.

Luke 21:32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.

This generation representing the last days or last times the whole new testament era.

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Heb 1:1

Heb 10:20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:Which was a figure(parable) for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. Heb 9:10

1Jo 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

To try and make "generation" in Matt 24 say, "Mankind will not pass away before this happens." is kind of silly. Of course Mankind cannot possibly pass away before things they will see happen, happen........ no matter WHEN they happen..

Folks, you are never going to be able to get ALL of the details that are described in the Olivet Discourse as occurring circa 70 A.D. And, you are never going to be able to get ALL of the details that are described in the Olivet Discourse as occurring at some point in time in the future.

It is 100% undeniably clear that some of what is described in the Olivet Discourse did in fact occur circa 70 A.D. And, it is 100% undeniably clear that some of what is described in the Olivet Discourse has not yet happened.

So -- what does that leave us with?

It leaves us with the only thing that actually "fits" both scripture and history.

The Olivet Discourse is describing events that occur over a span of time beginning ~70 A.D. and ending at some point in time in the future.

Study the 'grammar of the language'. I believe you will find that what Jesus said was that ( paraphrased ) "all of these things" will begin to occur "before this generation will pass"...

After that -- a close examination of scripture - compared to history -- will yield a resulting conclusion that what is described in the Olivet Discourse has been "unfolding" over the past ~2000 years.

you have that exactly backwards tanakh!

"[/COLOR]Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.

You serpents you brood of vipers, how will you escape being sentenced to Hell. Therefore I send you Prophets and wise men and Scribes, some of which you will kill and crucify and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town that upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth from the blood of innocent Abel to to the blood of Zechariah the Son of Barachiah whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. Truly I say to you all this will come upon this generation. Oh Jerusalem Jerusalem killing the Prophets and stoning those who are sent to you. How often would I have gathered your children together as a Hen gathers her brood under her wings and you would not Behold your house is forsaken and desolate For I tell you you will not see me again until you say Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Jesus left the Temple and was going away when his disciples came to point out the buildings of the Temple But he answered them You see all these things do you not? Truly I say to you there will be not be left one stone standing on another that will not be thrown down. As he sat on the Mount of Olives the disciples came to him privately saying tell us when this will be and what is the sign of your coming and the end of the age. Take heed that no one leads you astray for many will come in my name saying I am the Christ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars but see that you are not alarmed for this must take place but the end is not yet. For nation shall be against nation and kingdom against kingdom and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places
all this is but the beginning of the birth pangs. Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death and you will be hated by all nations for my names sake. And then many will fall away and betray and lad many astray And because wickedness is multiplied most mens love will grow cold. But he who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations and then the end will come

Matthew 23:33 - 24:14

The last days started in the generation that was alive at the time of Christ and is still continuing. At the time that he
gave these answers Jesus did not know when the end was to occur but he did know that the last days would begin with that generation and continue until the whole world had heard the gospel of the kingdom. He also knew and warned the
religious leaders and his disciples what would happen within their lifetimes. He warned that the conditions between that time and his second coming would get progressively worse. Today those conditions are reaching an intensity that strongly indicates that his coming could be soon. There are two false interpretations about these chapters. The first is the Preterist view that everything happened in 70AD and the other is the futurist view that nothing much happened until Israel became a nation again in 1948 both dates are important and the events surrounding them shouldn't be ignored.
