I think that runs the risk of people ganging up to dislike one person's posts out of a wolfpack mentality. (Kind of like what subtly happens with the like button option. If you look at certain threads, you'll see what I'm talking about...)

Here's a thought. More OP's should think about how they start the thread and guide the conversation.

LOL! They really put in work, didn't they?
But really though, I see the same groups of people argue against each other and I can predict who's going to like what, and no sooner than one person posts a wall of text do the others on their "team" like the post. And I'm like, "I just KNOW you guys didn't read that yay-long post all the way through before you liked it. You just like that person, dislike the opposition, or both."
Maybe people won't be as petty as I'm predicting with a dislike button, but...I can't say it would surprise me.
I don't even bother reading insanely long walls of text.. it literally makes my eyes go blurry..

I read every inch of post, as I don't want be confused. I even like some post, that others oppose, because there were things said, that made me seek...not necessarily because I agree with them.

...and that's too bad. People can let the nasty side of their personalities out and can hide behind the safety of their keyboard to say horrible things they wouldn't have the guts to say to someone in person. No changing human nature though, nor changing how people will behave when they think they can get away with something they know in their own minds isn't "right".
There are a few choices of how to proceed, and me personally, I choose to just ignore it. On the whole, there is no appreciable effect on my life if people want to endlessly debate eschatology and go round-and-round about it; there's no effect to me if people want to argue doctrines; there's no effect to me if members want to bash Catholics while Catholics aren't here to defend themselves. I enjoy a few threads here, and I enjoy interacting with some members. A few blow-hard keyboard commandos aren't going to spoil my enjoyment of this site.

What I find interesting is that I typically fall in with one team or another (I mean we all do), but if I step in on a thread later in the game, I don't really understand what they are arguing about because they are neck-deep on a particular.
A particular that is so minute, I suspect most members of each team wouldn't go to bat for it as individuals, but because they're at the bottom of the seventh, they'll keep playing.
If you step in not knowing the names, you would be utterly lost as to what is going on, because the argument bears so little resemblance to the original post. This is why courts, formalized debates, and public meetings have discussion parameters.
Really if there is anything I find vexing about the BDF, it's that. People getting a little mean or immature is to be expected even among the elect, unhappily. But I would be more likely to participate if things stayed on topic and didn't mutate after page one or two.

I would have to agree.
I would extend that to mean that not only should we be able to argue a point without descending to ugliness, but that we should also not crumble and be broken down because somebody called us a mean name. I mean, really...some complaints just sound like not having a backbone to me...
Maybe it's me. *shrug*
The "ignore" function is useful too. If someone proves themselves to be particularly pernicious, there is no point in further engaging them after you've said your piece and/or admonished them.
