It's written and explained in many places that to God a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.

This may also be an allusion to the fact that there is no such thing as 'time'; it is an invention (for lack of a better term) by man to mark the events in his history. We tend to use some fairly obvious "counters" to reckon it (e.g. - from one sunrise/sunset to another is reckoned as a unit of time called a 'day'), but those 'counters' are relative to where you are. If we all lived on say Mars, the 'counters' used here on earth would be entirely irrelevant.

In a sense, I suppose, you're right. There is no time. When God created the universe, time also came into being. The universe is a material construct. Time is the measure of the material. That also means that for you, a spirit, there is no time. but for you, a physical body time is terribly important. So then, time is not mans invention at all, but a natural result of God's creation. Biblical proof? And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. Hmmm The first day. The first day God was creating. The first day of creation.

Both of you are WRONG!..Face it fellows... you don't know what you are talking about. God tells us he created the earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th day. He did this by writing it down by his own hand in stone.

Our Lord God YHWH tells Moses to make sure the people of Israel keep to the sabbath after 6 days of their work (Man's days (24 Hours) Exodus 31:15

But then he turns around and tells Moses that He made the earth and Heavens in 6 days and rested on the 7th day written by the FINGER of GOD.....Exodus 31: 17-18

The days God speaks of are 24 hour days.......and there are several places that can attest to this.

Now suck it up and go practice what Acts 17:11 has to say. try to learn something..... for your soul's sake.

Well Thank you Professor Bladerunner! We were discussing time, not creation. And I don't have time for your nonsense

We don't need to know anyone's age at death... it's irrelevant to this question. What is relevant, and what is provided in Scripture, is the age at which each man had his son (at least for the first few thousand years). According to Genesis 4, Adam was 130 years old when Seth was born; Seth was 105 when Enosh was born, etc. So add up the years: 130 + 105, etc. There are a few different passages to put together to get the whole story. Consider also that most people who use this method assume that Adam was actually formed on day 6 of year 1, rather than after some indeterminate time. After the kings of Judah, the genealogies don't keep giving this kind of information, but there are other relevant pieces of information such as years of captivity and Daniel's prophecy.
You are absolutely correct! The chronology is followed by adding the fathers' ages when their sons were born. The Bible is actually more specific by saying "When Adam had lived 130 years", not 'When Adam was 130 years old. This phrasing continues in the genealogies in Genesis 5 and 11.

The genealogy takes us to when Abraham is 75 years old. Then we have a 430 year chunk of time spanning from when Abraham was 75 and set out from Haran until the exodus from Egypt, 430 years to the very day (Ex. 12:41).

The next chunk of time starts where the previous left off, at the exodus from Egypt, and spans 480 years to the laying of Solomon's Temple foundation (1 Kings 6). At this point the chronology goes back to the genealogies and the length of kings' reigns.

The video below takes a look at these and gives an overview and context to all of the events in the Scriptures. It also clears up some misunderstandings about the length of time the Israelites were in captivity in Egypt. Have a look at it! I've still got more to do on the exile before it's complete, but it's a good start to give an idea of the Timeline given in the Holy Scriptures.

Why genealogies in Genesis cannot be used for dating our planet, not even to say the universe:

1. We do not know which sources are the right ones. Masoretic text? Christian LXX text? Christian Vulgate text? Samaritan Pentateuch?

- it differs in thousands of years, from 5500 - 11500 years.

------

2. We do not know when Adam was created. It could be billions of years after the planet.

- the view, that "day" in Genesis means 24 hours is just a view and very likely a wrong one

-------

3. The purpose of Bible genealogies is not to give us record how old the planet is, but to give us lineages. Thats why the main goal of writers was not to list all people ever existing, but to give us nice shaped numbers of genealogies from one known patriarch to another, 7, 14, 40 generations of known names etc.

--------

When we take at least these 3 points into consideration, the simple summing of ages looks very weak for proving the age of the universe. We do not even need any science to tell us that.

If you're going to look at the age of the Earth by looking at the chronology of the lineage, you'll have to decide which came first Earth or man. `The Earth is much much older than man.

Thank all of you!

For those who want to know why it matters, to me it doesn't but it's a big part of apologetics. I bought a book at the Grand Canyon. At first I thought it was a book of photos with Bible Verses, but it turns out that a lot of it is about how the Grand Canyon couldn't have been created over millions of year because the Bible suggests a young Earth. Personally, I've never sat down and tried to determine the age of the Earth, using the Bible or carbon dating, but that got me thinking.

Frankly I do believe that man is young on an old Earth There is a strong evidence for a pre Adamic civilization Some of the kings of that ancient civilization ruled for up to forty thousand years. Long lived? You bet! I have some work to do on my smashed car, but I'll back in an hour or so and give you examples of what I mean..

OK I'm back...Look. Even if you choose not to believe what you read, its still interesting. .... I have many ancient history texts in my library.

Berossus listed ten legendary kings who ruled before the worldwide flood. During the reign of Ammenon, the fourth king, the hybrid demi-god Oannes appeared. The antediluvian kings listed by Berossus were said to have ruled
Sumer for 120 periods of 3,600 years—a combined total of 432,000
years.

Alorus 36,000 Alaparus 10,800
Almelon 46,800 Ammenon
43,200 Amegalarus 64,800
Daonus 36,000 Edoranchus
64,800 Amempsinus 36,000
Otiartes 28,800 Xisuthrus
64,800 totalling 432,000 astronomical years, then the flood.

While the kings of Berossus’s pre-Flood list seem exaggerated, there is corroborating evidence in the Sumerian King List, a clay tablet dated by the scribe who wrote it in the reign of King Utukhegal of Erech (Uruk), c.2125 B.C. The Sumerian King List compiled the reigns of kings in Sumer before a cataclysmic flood. The total span of the combined reigns of king on this list however is somewhat shorter than the list of Berossus, a mere 241,200 years before the Flood.

After the kingship descended from heaven, the kingship was in Eridug. In Eridug, Alulim became king; he ruled for 28800 years. Alaljar ruled for 36000 years. 2 kings; they ruled for 64800 years. Then Eridug fell and the kingship was taken to Bad-tibira.In Bad-tibira, Enmen-lu-ana ruled for 43200 years. En-men-gal-ana ruled for 28800 years. Dumuzid, the shepherd, ruled for 36000 years.3 kings; they ruled for 108000 years. Then Bad-tibira fell (?) and the kingship was taken to Larag. In Larag, Ensipad-zid-ana ruled for 28800 years.1 king; he ruled for 28800 years. Then Larag fell (?) and the kingship was taken to Zimbir. In Zimbir, En-men-durana became king; he ruled for 21000 years. 1 king; he ruled for 21,000 years. Then Zimbir fell (?) and the kingship was taken to Curuppag. In Curuppag, Ubara- Tutu became king; he ruled for 18,600 years.1 king; he ruled for 18,600 years. In 5 cities 8 kings; they ruled for 241,200 years. Then the flood swept over

Actually BR The bible does not say that. Going by what you say, God created a flawed Earth. Then He had to rebuild it. Look Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth. It was done.

Gen 1:2 The Earth was without form and void...

Gen 1:3 And God said let there be light and so forth.....

If there was nothing but creation, then God messed up His creation and had to redo it.

Now you and I know that God doesn't make mistakes, messes or anything of the sort. So then, What happened between vs and vs 3? Because something messed up the planet. Look at vs 3 God was not creating. He was re forming the Earth. and the universe...Yes He spoke it and what we have came to be, but it was already there because He had already created it, and now He was rebuilding it.
Truthfully I do not expect many of you to accept this because its too far beyond what you are used to, and you do not have the paradigm to fit it into. Sorry about that. Anyway read it and see what you think.
Plato described a series of cataclysms that periodically wiped out the records of human history; causing humans to forget all they had learned up to that point, and to start again “as children.” The Ouroboros appropriately symbolized the aion time cycle, since the cycles of the Milky Way’s descent from the heavens and the alignment of the “tail- biting snake”—during the
suntelia indicated by Sagittarius— coincided with
some cataclysmic event that ended the normal progression of a civilization. The Hebrew understanding of the ages of the earth described by the Zohar (2[SUP]nd[/SUP] century AD) echoed the writings of Plato. In the Siphra’ Di-Tseni`uthah (Book of Mystery or Silence), an age ruled by Seven Kings was destroyed in the time before Adam: And the second earth came not into the computation. (That is,
the kingdom of the restored world, Or otherwise, when in Genesis iv. 2 it is said in another way, “And the earth,” that earth is not to be understood of which mention hath been first made; since by the first is to be understood the
kingdom of the restored world, and by the second the kingdom of the destroyed world) And it hath proceeded out of that which hath undergone the curse, as it is written in Genesis v., 29, “From the earth which the
Lord hath cursed.” (The meaning is: That the kingdom of the restored world was formed from the kingdom of the destroyed world, wherein seven kings had died and their possessions had been broken up. Or, the explanation of the
world, of which mention is made elsewhere, proceedeth from the kingdom of the destroyed world.)
This text explains there existed a pre-Adamic race; intelligent beings flourished and built civilizations before the creation of Adam. The Zohar, however, is not the only source for the belief that beings as advanced or superior to modern man existed on earth prior to Adam. The Hebrew prophet Jeremiah wrote: I beheld the earth, and, lo, [it was] without form, and void; and the heavens, and they [had] no light. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, [there was] no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place [was] a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, [and] by his fierce anger. For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end. For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be
black: because I have spoken [it], I have purposed [it], and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it. (Jer 4:23-28 KJV) The first sentence of Jeremiah is remarkably similar to the very first words of the Old Testament:
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. (Genesis 1:2) The Hebrew words used in both passages for “the earth was without form and void” are the same. The verb
tohu, translated “was,” means “to lay waste.” Scholars have often cited these two passages in the Old Testament as referring to an epoch of destruction before the creation of Adam. Nechunya ben HaKanah (1st C A.D.) believed that the earth was 15.3 billion years old. Nechunya’s theory was based on a long- standing system of calculation of times purportedly imbedded in the Hebrew writings of Moses. According to the Midrash Sod Haibbur, a scholarly guide to the Torah, God himself gave Moses precise rules for measuring times and seasons, a skill which the priestly caste of Israel had zealously maintained. According to the pre-Adamic view of Bible chronology, after the cataclysm which Jeremiah described, God separated the waters from the land, dispersed the clouds shrouding the earth and created the first post
destruction
day Christian theologian G.H Pember ‘s Earth’s Earliest Ages (1876) declared: When rightly understood the Bible is found to have left an interval of undefined magnitude between creation and the Post tertiary period, and men may bridge it as they can with their discoveries without fear of impugning the revelations of God. Pember realized that the fossil record contradicted the popular belief of his contemporaries that the world was quite young: God created the heavens and the earth perfect and beautiful in their beginning, and at some subsequent period, how remote we cannot tell, the earth had passed into a state of utter desolation, and was void of all life…for as the fossil remains clearly show, not only were disease and death inseparable companions of sin, then prevalent among living creatures of the earth, but even ferocity and slaughter… they must have had a sin stained history of their own, a history which ended in the ruin of themselves and their habitation. And since a lord and vice regent was set over the animal kingdom of our world… so we should naturally conclude that superior beings inhabited and ruled that former world, and, like Adam, transgressed the
laws of their creator

I've read every verse in the Bible at least once and, while I don't pretend to remember every verse, I don't understand how anyone can estimate the age of the Earth using the Bible. I want to be clear: I am not saying the Earth isn't young. Nor am I saying that it isn't old. Simply that I don't understand how anyone can estimate the age of the Earth by reading the Bible. Many genealogies don't list every single person in the family. They're not necessarily incomplete; just a different type of genealogy than we'd use today. We also don't have the age at death of everyone listed in a genealogy. So how do people estimate the age of the Earth using the Bible?
Start with Genesis 5th chapter....

Genesis 5:1This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;[SUP] 2 [/SUP]Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.[SUP] 3 [/SUP]And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth:[SUP] 4 [/SUP]And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:[SUP] 5 [/SUP]And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.[SUP]6 [/SUP]And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos:[SUP] 7 [/SUP]And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters:[SUP] 8 [/SUP]And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.[SUP]9 [/SUP]And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan:[SUP] 10 [/SUP]And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters:[SUP] 11 [/SUP]And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.[SUP]12 [/SUP]And Cainan lived seventy years and begat Mahalaleel:[SUP] 13 [/SUP]And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters:[SUP] 14 [/SUP]And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.[SUP]15 [/SUP]And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared:[SUP] 16 [/SUP]And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters:[SUP] 17 [/SUP]And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.[SUP] 18 [/SUP]And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch:[SUP] 19 [/SUP]And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:[SUP] 20 [/SUP]And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.[SUP] 21 [/SUP]And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:[SUP] 22 [/SUP]And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:[SUP] 23 [/SUP]And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:[SUP] 24 [/SUP]And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.[SUP]25 [/SUP]And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech.[SUP] 26 [/SUP]And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters:[SUP] 27 [/SUP]And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.[SUP]28 [/SUP]And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:[SUP] 29 [/SUP]And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed.[SUP] 30 [/SUP]And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:[SUP] 31 [/SUP]And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.[SUP]32 [/SUP]And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

We do not even need any science to tell us that.

wouldn't counting the generations give you the age of man and not so much the planet.

when did the age of man begin, at the creation of Adam or the fall of Adam?
the difference in age between man and earth is only a few days
