True.
Chasten means to form. It's a wood working term.
It's eye is on who we are becoming, like Christ.
Convicting of righteousness is actually the idea of chastening.
It's focus is on making us more like the Lord.
And repentance is about what's in front of us, not simply what's behind us.
Jesus Himself says, "Repent for the Kingdom is at hand".
Godly sorry leads to repentance, but it isn't repentance.
Repentance is a change of mind.
The question is what is the change of mind toward?
It's toward God.
The idea isn't a change of mind to how sinful I am, but how righteous I am in Christ.
How good He is, how forgiven I am, etc.
Paul explains this idea by saying, "I am crucified to the world"
The life I now live is in Christ, toward God, focused on God.
Keep your eyes on Heavenly things.
This is true repentance, submitting to Him.

It's like we play with words some days.
I have heard some people prefer the word "convince" instead of "convict" because they don't like image of prison clothes.
I freely admit I don't like your choice of words because they are unclear and easily misunderstood.
However I will attempt to look past that and see if I agree or disagree with your concepts of what God's chastenment does.
I believe God has to convince us that what we did is a sin before he can show us who we are supposed to be.
I do agree there is an aspect of God revealing who we are in Him in chastenment. However it's more than that for me.
When we sin, we step out of His illuminating light. Often into a pit dug by the enemy.
We should stop and pray and wait upon God. Not just for forgiveness, because we know God is merciful and will forgive, but also for healing and His light.
God's presence chases away the enemy and allows us the Light to see. It is then that the Holy spirit talks to us and shows us why we fell into the pit, How we were lead astray, the kinks in our armor, the arrows that made it through, our spiritual strongholds that war against God.
It is then that God helps us cut off the flesh and strengthen our faith.
God's chastenment is more than "convicting us of righteousness". It is showing us our weakness and teaching us how to cut away the flesh or reinforce our armor. The cutting away of the flesh is what is painful.
Reinforcing armor? That is a joyful thing.
Chastenment is said to be painful while it happens for a reason.
It's like a splinter....hurts to remove but if left in can cause you to lose the whole arm due to rot.
