You OBVIOUSLY never went to Catholic school. Every Friday we went down and said something like This to the priest:
"Bless me father for I have sinned, it has been a week since my last confession." Priest- " what sins have you committed?" me- " er... Ummm... I hit my brother, I cursed 6 times, I looked on someone's test sheet...." etc... Priest - for your pennance say 6 Hail Marys, and 7 Our Fathers"
Didn't get much out of the Lord's prayer then! Lol
Been there done that too Brother Penn. After getting saved., the "Hail Mary" was totally discarded although I can say it from memory as it's embedded in my brain. I've always loved the "Lord's Prayer" or "Disciple's Prayer" and for years after being saved prayed using it much like you posted here.
And it was very helpful to bring me to more places in prayer and how to pray today. We learn to keep the right things and discard the wrong things so; Hail Mary out.., Lord's Prayer in. I don't pray the Act of contrition anymore and discarded it along with the hail Mary prayer. But can say to till this day too.
Our Baptist church taught that we can use the Lord's Prayer as a model and I agree and have done so for many years. Today I'm so familiar with going to Jesus I don't need the model prayer like I did before but I still love it and use it and have it hung on my wall. I would no more discard it than I would Psalms 23. And anyone who really is reading this thread for what is really being said will agree Bruce is in no way advocating we discard this prayer. But we see it in light of the cross.
I used to see Psalm 23 as a prayer for the dead at funerals. But have totally since changed my mind on that and see it in light of the cross. It's for US LIVING people!!! It's especially helpful in the Amplified Bible. Also, speaking of reading the verses and understanding them differently as we grow., I came to see that when Jesus prepares a table for me in the presence of my enemies., that is NOT in heaven but it's HERE. There will be NO enemies in heaven. I've lived that truth out here today because Jesus has prepared a table for me many times in the presence of my enemies. He has rescued me and done it in front of them. And I didn't have to say a thing.
There are so many things the Bible is not saying particularly "to" us Christians today but they are words "for" us to learn about and learn from. Some words were specifically given to the legalistic Jews in Hebrews and we need to see the verses properly in their context. When a believer today takes a verse meant for the legalistic Jews who were having a hard time transitioning from the law to the Gospel of grace and truth IN Christ., they will be totally confused and we can see it here on these threads people applying verses not meant for the believer under this covenant of grace and instead they are putting themselves under the law again.
The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me],
I shall not want.

He lets me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still

He refreshes

He leads me in the paths of righteousness

Surely goodness and mercy
