Reminds me of Captain Natey in Catch 22. He purposefully makes himself bored so as to slow his perception of time, thereby increasing his life expectancy.
I don't think Heller intended the reader to take it this way, but I walked away thinking some things that make life shorter and momentarily unpleasant also make it worth living.

PS: Don't hate me for saying this, but ... I think that book is really, really, really over- rated.
