In case you don't know, I am a member of meetup.com - a site that advertises various groups you can belong to that meet up (hence the name of the site) at various locations whether a restaurant or movie theater or park or somebody's home. There are various ones including a divorce one, a social group for couples, and few that are only for people over 50 (which I am a member of). I've had some luck with these earning a few friends that I keep in touch with time to time. It has been a help for me in getting over my divorce. The bad thing is that I live rather in between two larger cities in Wisconsin here and have to drive usually 45 minutes to get to any one gathering. So I try to limit my attendance in these groups as to limit my gas consumption.

Has anybody had much luck with this site and meetups in your area?

I joined a few groups a while ago.. due to my being a chicken I have yet to meet up... That doesn't help I know

Hey Jeff,

Glad to hear meetup is helping you. I have the same problem as you--most groups I'm interested in are an hour away, so that puts a limit on what I could attend. As a single gal, I'm also not too keen on going to unfamiliar places at night to meet up with complete strangers, either.

I went to one event because I was glad to see that a few people in my age range had signed up.

None of them showed. It was all people 10-20 years older than me, which is fine, but...

They also say that for however many people sign up, maybe half will show, so it's been hard for me to see the point in driving an hour each way to meet up with say, 10 people who aren't even in my age range.

I hope you find something that works for you! God bless.

yep. half don't show. I've seen the same thing. In fact, when my divorce group was going full tilt, we had bowling in the fall one Friday a month. Sometimes over 70 would sign up but yeah only 20 to 30 would actually show. I have only once in my life signed up for a meetup and just not shown up. Rest of the time if I signed up I went and if I didn't want to go I took my name off the list. Often there are waiting lists which means others want to go and if you stay on the list and don't want to go you are gipping others of their ability to go. I have known of some people who can be counted on to not go despite being signed up.

Some of it is last minutes changes to people's lives and some of it is just indecision.

But I am seeing a friend tomorrow who I met in a meetup.com group, so it paid off in some ways.

Yeah, the distance just killed it for me on those Meetups. The nearest metro area with at least 100K people is over 45 minutes away. Needless to say, I never attended one.

So half of them don't even show up? Hmm...maybe smaller groups are better.
