I seriously have no use for popular culture.
I've often wondered just how good the popular things are if they were forced to stand on their own. Take a television series for example - is it popular because it's really good, or because enough people have convinced themselves it's good because it's popular? If not for the talk and discussion about a TV show, how many people would actually bother tuning into watch it?
To me, popular culture is psychological programming. I don't like being told what to watch, what to like, what to think, what to believe. So, if something is popular, I avoid it like the plague. If that makes me look "out of touch" then so be it, and we won't waste time trying to chit-chat about the latest season of Game of Thrones, because I've never seen a single episode.
Many years after a series has had it's run and the masses have moved onto their latest fad or craze, that is when I will begin watching it, and without the constant blathering of other people to potentially influence my thinking, I will determine if that show is really any good or if it's drek.
Seriously.
