It depends, if it's a spontanious date where you meet someone and decide to go out then what ever your wearing is fine,
if its a planned in advance date, then you should dress for the occasion, if its like fastfod and an amusement park, something light and running shoes would probably be ideal, if its dancing and a somewhat up scale restaurant than perhaps something formal would be more suitable.
If its a very formal event. Then definatly a formal wear would be idea. Tuxedo and a dress.
But the bible is clear that modesty is important so you should be modestly dressed at all times.

Growing up spending time with southern roots...when you went to church or to town you wore your Sunday clothes and took extra care in your appearance. I do the same thing now more or less...but I'm not big on wearing dresses often. At home? Jeans, shorts, t-shirts, and I like to run around in boxer shorts. When I'm at home I want to be comfortable and get dirty without ruing good clothes. I do not like irons or ironing boards anymore.
I shop at the thrift store but always look cute. Not everything I buy has a brand name to it, some things do, but it's all cute!!! It's amazing what rich people give away...
But personally it's about taste. I like country looking me, jeans and a flannel, or jeans and tshirt kind of guy. So it depend on the girl, as long as he likes my thrift store finds it's all good!

I tend to naturally be drawn to women that are low maintenance. A woman too regularly caught up in her appearance would be a bother for me. That's day to day. For nicer occasions she likes to dress nicer that's fine, even nice to see from time to time.
That said, if a woman were to be too sloppy looking that would be a turn off as well. Pajamas are meant for home, not walmart or the grocery store.
I'm also rarely a fan of modern trends, mens or womens.

If I was the casual dating type, I wouldn't give it any thought at all. I'm not the casual dating type, so anyone that I REALLY start dating would be a considered marriage partner. And yes, it matters a lot to me what they wear. Is that strange?
I've always been around guys who don't look out of place in grungy work clothes, and yet manage to dress very sharply when occasion requires. I would have to think about it before marrying someone who wasn't comfortable in work clothes, and I'd have to think really seriously before marrying someone who can't dress up.
That's the kind of girl I am, I guess. When you work, you work hard and you wear old clothes. You're used to working hard and the clothes fit you like a glove because you're so comfy in them. And then you spit and polish and get into a suit and go to church. I'm a dressy enough girl that I honestly don't know if I could even consider a guy who didn't dress well. Not like he has to have perfect fashion taste or anything. I'm not gonna lie, my mom STILL lays out my dad's shirts and ties, because dad is basically color blind. But really, learn to wear a suit well. It gives a look of confidence and manliness that I personally find extremely attractive.

It's not strange, but are you judging righteously? That's the more important question.

My brothers and dad have always worn suits or blazers, or just a shirt and tie. Whatever. I wasn't really speaking to condemn anyone, just what I like. We grew up pretty well drilled in "It doesn't matter what you feel like, and it doesn't matter how out of place you feel, you're going to see the King of kings." Nope, it's not going to impress him or make him view us as better. It is just a rather old-fashioned show of respect which we are actually slowly losing. And hey, we worship in a mall. We get a fair amount of people just coming as they are in shorts etc. and we welcome them just as warmly.
