IS SMOKING A SIN?

Which substance do you defend -- white flour? Sugar? Salt? Caffeine? You tend to think you're above because, "At least I don't smoke."

I can defend that smoking isn't a sin, according to God's law. I can also defend white flour, sugar, and caffeine. And here's a shocker, I don't do any of them. At least, I'm using the Bible. You're making it up as you go along, and then laughing at others.

I have stated not only how any willfull taking in of deadly substances is wrong,but I am not above anyone,only God/Jesus is greater than any person,my not having partaking of any deadly substances has no bearing on that we all are sinners,and we are no comparison to God,nor is any of us greater than eachother.

My husband had a heart attack. He smoked a pack a day before having that heart attack. He now says he quit smoking the hard way -- having a heart attack and being unconscious for 6 weeks. (He was sedated while on the EKMO and vent, so he was awake enough to shake his head no when the nurse was asking me if he wanted a nicotine patch, so he did intentionally quit then, even if he has no memory of withdrawal symptoms.)

One thing I really wanted to give him before he came home was a smoke-free house. Desperate to give him that before he came home, and we were already working toward quitting together before the heart attack.

SEVEN months! Seven months before he came home, so I asked for prayers, I sought God's help with as much as I could, I got nicotine patches, Nicorette lozenges, (I hate chewing gum), got rid of all temptations in the house, contacted the Quit-line for support, and was busy enough visiting him, signing stuff and talking to doctors about him, and maintaining the house while he was gone, that it was the best time ever to quit with the right motivations and prayer.

Three times I tried to quit. Made it 4.5 days once. HIS life depended on me quitting. Can't be any more motivated than that!

Couldn't do it.

Fortunately, I'm married to him, not you.

There are two hurdles to jump to quit smoking -- addiction and habit. Seven months of not smoking for hubby, and by the end of the sixth month, he was able to wheel around the nursing home by himself, so he could go outside. Outside had two things going for it in his mind -- fresh air, (which isn't entirely fresh, since we live in Philly, but it really does smell fresh compared to being couped up in a hospital that long) and people. In his case, "people" were people like him. It was a VA nursing home (with short-term and long-term units), so the people were all veterans like him. All guys too. (The one woman I got to know was leaving right then, the first time I pushed hubby through the corridors in his wheelchair.) Oh, and the fresh air was also the only place people could smoke there. (How I got to know the residents before hubby did. lol)

Wonderful thing he learned then. God did another miracle. He didn't simply pass by the withdrawal symptoms. God also handed him the lack of desire to smoke as a habit too.

All that and he came home. Habit is so bad, he couldn't figure out what was missing when he watched TV on his sofa, and what was missing when he was on his computer. He laughed when he figured it out. There is ritual in lighting a cigarette, smoking it, and a place to flick ashes and extinguish the cig, aka ashtray. He laughed when he finally figured out what was missing. The ritual of smoking. God gave him no desire.

He loves me, and he remembers how grumpy he was just trying to not smoke for 90 minutes, while knowing I smoke twice as much as he does, and yet sat with him for 90 minutes before cig break, and then another hour after. He loves me enough to know how much can't-quit bothers me.

And I love him for not being you and making my incapability a good excuse to brag on how much more superior you are.

I'm an ex-drug addict. I quit drinking when I quit getting high. God gifted me that skill level when needed. And because I went through drug rehab with other ex-addicts and addicts, I also know people who quit heroin, coke, smack, and three liters of whiskey a day habits, but tobacco is the one they couldn't quit.

I pity the fools who think they are so far superior because babble-babble-babble Bible verses to prove their superiority. At least I know why God has me on the short-leash. To remind me of how incapable I am without him.

Glad I did,that is a great miracle,and I understand what you mean,there are people who think they are "superior" to others somehow by giving larger tithes or keeping from sin and declaring it pridefully,it's nonsense I agree,my only point I was trying to make not directly at you but anyone in general is just some simple things...
1.smoking is sin
2.it can lead to death
3.a person through habit can die and so it's not wise to mess with it
4.If someone is hooked on cigarettes then if they ever hope to quit they need to keep it far from them,seek God for strength to resist pursuing it,and a personal desire to honestly stop smoking(as with in what you shared in your post you prayed God answered with a miracle and both you took steps to keep a smoke free house for him that is great devotion!) not simply give it up and start again,I have an uncle that does this every once and a while because he meets a pretty woman or wants to buy presents for someone but he hasn't quit because he has no "honest desire" to stop smoking entirely you certainly have an "honest desire" to stop smoking,with God's help hopefully you can,God bless you and that's all from me,I suppose on this topic.

You, saying this, is very contrary to what you tell me in private. Get out of that shell of hypocrisy.

Is smoking a sin? Well I believe it is. Not sure if you've revisited this thread 1lite, I've only skimmed thru it, but even if you haven't this link may be of great value to someone else reading here. Think about it you who smoke, why did you even start in the first place? I'd say for the majority it was being rebellious, perhaps I should speak for myself. In any case, was it right reasons (righteous) was it godly reasons (holy)? Be honest. Before you know it you're hooked, an addict. They say addicts are the best con artists, first of all lying to themselves. As a former smoker I can say all this and, if anyone wants to growl about it that's fine with me.

My Cigarette, My Friend

How do you feel about a friend who has to go everywhere with you? Not only does he tag along all the time, but since he is so offensive and vulgar, you become unwelcome when with him. He has a peculiar odor that sticks to you wherever you go. Others think both of you stink.
He controls you totally. When he says jump, you jump. Sometimes in the middle of a blizzard or storm, he wants you to come to the store and pick him up. You would give your spouse hell if he or she did that to you all the time, but you can't argue with your friend. Sometimes, when you are out at a movie or play he says he wants you to go stand in the lobby with him and miss important scenes. Since he calls all the shots in your life, you go.

Your friend doesn't like your choice of clothing either. Instead of politely telling you that you have lousy taste, he burns little holes in these items so you will want to throw them out. Sometimes, he tires of the furniture and gets rid of it too. Occasionally, he gets really nasty and decides the whole house must go.

He gets pretty expensive to support. Not only is his knack of property destruction costly, but you must pay to keep him with you. In fact, he will cost you thousands of dollars over your lifetime. And you can count on one thing, he will never pay you a penny in return.

Often at picnics you watch others playing vigorous activities and having lots of fun doing them. But your friend won't let you. He doesn't believe in physical activity. In his opinion, you are too old to have that kind of fun. So he kind of sits on your chest and makes it difficult for you to breathe. Now you don't want to go off and play with other people when you can't breathe, do you?

Your friend does not believe in being healthy. He is really repulsed by the thought of you living a long and productive life. So, every chance he gets he makes you sick. He helps you catch colds and flu. Not just by running out in the middle of the lousy weather to pick him up at the store. He is more creative than that. He carries thousands of poisons with him which he constantly blows in your face. When you inhale some of them, they wipe out cilia in your lungs which would have helped you prevent these diseases.

But colds and flu are just his form of child's play. He especially likes diseases that slowly cripple you - like emphysema. He considers this disease great. Once he gets you to have this, you will give up all your other friends, family, career goals, activities - everything. You will just sit home and caress him, telling him what a great friend he is while you desperately gasp for air.

But eventually your friend tires of you. He decides he no longer wishes to have your company. Instead of letting you go your separate ways, he decides to kill you. He has a wonderful arsenal of weapons behind him. In fact, he has been plotting your death since the day you met him. He picked all the top killers in society and did everything in his power to ensure you would get one of them. He overworked your heart and lungs. He clogged up the arteries to your heart, brain, and every other part of your body. In case you were too strong to succumb to this, he constantly exposed you to cancer causing agents. He knew he would get you sooner or later.

Well, this is the story of your "friend," your cigarette. No real friend would do all this to you. Cigarettes are the worst possible enemies you ever had. They are expensive, addictive, socially unacceptable, and deadly. Consider all this and - NEVER TAKE ANOTHER PUFF!

When Jesus went to the cross,and hung on the cross,He was saying forget the world,and all of its sin,and He endured torture,and terrible pain,and was crucified on the cross,for He went against the grain of how the world operates.

All that suffering,and did not throw in the towel,and all that pain,and did not give in,and all that humiliation,and did not turn His back on going to the cross.

All that Jesus endured,and was saying forget the world,and their ways,for I will not conform to be like them in their sinful ways.

And people cannot endure the temptation of smoking,and smoke a cigarette,and Jesus could endure painful torture,and being hung on a cross,but did not give in to the world,and become like them,and conform to their ways to try to duck the torture,and cross.

People cannot endure the measly,tiny,insignificant,minuscule,puny,trivial,temptation of wanting a cigarette,and Jesus could endure the torture,and pain,and suffering,and humiliation,and being hung on a cross,and not throw in the towel,and not give in,and not turn away,and not conform to their ways,but kept steadfast in doing what He knew was right.

That is so strange that it can make a person angry.

Cry over a little cigarette,oh boo hoo,I cannot beat it,and am suffering,and Jesus went through all he went through,and did not give in.

Amazing,and I know it sounds harsh,but we humans can be pathetic at times.

Heb 12:3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
Heb 12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

You have not had it as bad as Jesus,and you cannot endure it,but all you have to do is put up with a little temptation once in a while,and you cannot endure it.

The beautiful part is, Jesus/Yeshua will help you quit, you have to be willing.

Statistics say there are more ex-smokers in the US than smokers. That's a lot of ex-smokers. so the next time you hear a whiny excuse as to why someone cannot possibly quit smoking~call them on it. What they mean is they don't want to quit smoking! That's how addictions work, while you are still smoking you believe the nicotine lie that you cannot manage without it. It's just a lie, you can not only manage but thrive and have a better quality of life and not feel guilty anymore! Win win.

Well I think it can more than just a temptation, in the beginning yea, probably of peer pressure to be cool, fit in etc, or looking for a outlet for what ever reason that might be effecting emotions or surroundings.

nicotine like other chemicals that can become addictive for these chemicals effect the brains neurotransmitters and can be quite hard to quit.

I'm a strict constructionist in everything. The bible doesn't mention it, but it stands to reason that God created tobacco. I just don't think everyone has the same sins. If sin is what separates us from God, tobacco use may not separate everyone from him.

Let me try it this way.

Video games is one of my downfalls. I am an addict, after all, so if I do something I don't do anything halfheartedly. So when I played video games, 8 hours felt like 1 hour, and it still wasn't enough. So, for me, video games is sin.

I do get smoking is sin for you. How about video games?

Is video games sin for all because it is sin for me?

Actually, I can see when there will become a time when that one is preached as the irrevocable sin that smoking is taught today, and now junk food, and believing the wrong eschatology. But that's not the gospel. That's driver-righteousness.

What's driver-righteousness? It's a common sin in man. Haughtiness. Almost everyone who drives believes they drive right, and most other drivers drive wrong. It's the same as bank-robber-righteousness. "I don't rob banks, but you do, so you are less than me, and I am better than you." It's the smug belief that if we don't have a problem with a sin area, we earn righteousness -- the kind of righteousness others do not possess. Pure haughtiness.

The gospel is against that, calling none of us righteous, but it sure seems that one is ignored by most of us. (Probably all of us. lol) And, in many churches, they go out of their way to teach some kind of righteousness. Non-smoker-righteousness, non-porn-watching-righteousness. (An easy one to claim in public, since it's rarely verifiable.) Eating-righteousness. ("You, heathen, you! How dare you eat Fritoes? Your body is a temple.")

I should not play video games because it takes away from the important things in life -- God, my husband, my duties. THAT's why it is sin for me. BUT I cannot claim video-game-righteousness to others, because most others aren't addicted to them like I was. And, I won't tell others it's a sin, simply because it is a sin for me.

It is like pork, shellfish, and smoking. It really is sinful for some Christians to eat pork. If they are true to themselves, then shellfish should follow. And, if they're doing it for show, then that is haughtiness, which is also sin. BUT for those who truly consider pork sin, should they be preaching that it is sin for all others? No more so than I should be preaching video-games is sin. If God convicts us that it is sin, it is sin. (For me, it is simply a matter of I can't eat pork anymore. No gallbladder, so nothing there to emulsify the fats quickly enough. ) And, if God convicts us that it is sin, the brothers shouldn't be preaching that it is not sin to us.

Smoking can be sin. It is not for many people. It is not for many nonsmokers even. BUT if God doesn't convict us about it, then why should the brothers try to convict us?

Smoking is bad. It is stupid. It is unhealthy. It stops me from doing two things I'd really like to be able to do -- make this house a healthier place to live in, and make hubby and me more capable of going into a nursing home, when that is needed. (Can't smoke in nursing homes.) I'd love to quit. I'm fully aware of all of the negatives. I watched Mom wither away to 65 pounds as cancer ate her alive. I even saw the cancer on her. I watched my husband on an EKMO machine, ventilator, and dialysis machine. I have visuals in my mind of what smoking can do to a person, and yet can't quit. It is horribly stupid!

BUT it is not sin to me.

Don't become a self-righteousness christian. Too many of them already in the church, and it squanders who God really is by swapping him out to self-righteousness. And don't be fooled by the ones preaching on this thread. They're really preaching ego, not God.

Jim Beam is a sin on the taste buds. lol

(I just don't like the taste of alcohol. I figured out early -- although not early enough -- that if we have to acquire a taste for something, it's probably a waste of time to try to acquire that taste. If not a waste of time, definitely a drain on the wallet.)

To the OP, if you would like to look into health and addiction further get busy with Psalms 109: 17 - 21 where David complains that people were trying to give him a false image and one of the things they tried to do was to accuse of the same sin as James in the story. It goes into detail about habitual sin and what action you can take.

Psalms 143: 5 - 10 teaches you about pursuing addictions for a long time. Hosea 4: 12 - 13 discusses things that are missing in people's lives and that which they put higher on their list of priorities than their committment to God. 2 Peter: 2 - 19 talks about being enslaved to anything, smoking is one of the worst culprits of this and gives words of warning in the passage that are ideal to pay attention too.

Remember if there's anything taking God's place in your life, ask Him to help and forgive you!

Funny thing. I really was listening to you as I read your words. (Obviously, can't say you were listening to me.) You've said nothing new here. And, if "honest desire" works, than are you being honest about your desire to quit all sin? If "honest desire" was all it took, we would all be sin free.

You simply made an exception for smoking because of nonsmoker-righteousness.

I did listen to you. You are wrong, and your heaping sin-guilt onto people who already feel guilty, even if they don't believe it is sin.

There are in-patient rehabs for drugs, alcohol, even sex now, but none for smokers. Someone could make money having one for smokers. I'd join. One of my dreams is to stick me on a bare island on a lake somewhere, far enough away from the mainland that I cannot swim and just feed me and shelter me for six to eight weeks. A shack will do. It doesn't have to be a fancy place, but it sure has to be a sturdy place. Because it is likely I will have screaming-meanie fits. And the food can be hospital food. (Might die of high-blood pressure because of all of that salt, but it's a risk worth taking. lol)

All I really want is a place where I can't go get another cig while I go through withdraw, no matter what I concoct in my mind because I really want one. And then some hints on how to live without a smoking ritual.

There is a fortune to be made in that idea. Rehabs for rich people. Other rehabs for poor people, all with the goal of stopping us from grabbing a cig in the time it takes to clear our minds and bodies of that stupid dependency.

Which is better, whiny or self-promotion? Considering the self-promotion was whiny, it was a lose/lose.

The Pharisees called Jesus a sinner too, but what did he say? It’s not what goes in a man that defiles a man, but the sin which comes from the heart of a man that defiles a man. In my opinion, there are enough sins to worry about instead of creating new ones in our minds.

Smoking is definitely not good for anyone’s health, but neither is eating too many doughnuts, fried foods, etc. ….If one way of harming your body is a sin then it goes to reason they all would be, and if that is the case then the whole state of Kentucky is on the highway to hell….cause you know we like our chicken fried…and we’re also tempting the rest of the world trying to take down as many people as we can by putting those sinful abominations known as KFC everywhere.
