Blue is right. Termites are horrible pests. Damage done by them is very rarely covered by homeowners insurance. Here in the South, many houses are covered by termite pest companies with annual premiums of $150 - $200.

All a colony needs is moisture, cellulite (wood), protection from the elements like a house's basement or crawl space and a fertile queen to set up housekeeping.

BUT, I live in the city. Why would a termite travel through (city) blocks and blocks of masonry when they can hang out in the woods or near houses made of wood? We don't even have lawn, (unless you count that median strip around the corner as lawn. lol)

We also don't get ticks for the same reason. And fleas weren't a problem with our cat.

Mice, on the other hand... :eek:

Most all housing and small buildings
in the US use lumber for interior framing. The exterior veneer of brick, stucco, stone, concrete blocks etc. are used only to keep the weather out and also eye appeal.

If you could fill your house up tightly with water so you would have no leaks in the walls, ceiling and foundation, you would have a termite proof house. If there is one potential leak, they could easily find it and you could soon have plenty of company.

Termites are found in Manhatten regularly. There they hitch rides as stowaways on household items that had come from the basements in suburbia where their landlords had moved from.
