That's only for little kids, right?
Wrong.

Woke up last Thursday with a chronically sore throat
and it felt like there was something caught in it.
Spent all day trying to cough up whatever it was.
By that evening I'd given up and decided to just look in there.
Had the tell-tale white spots on my tonsils and uvula, and my uvula
was swollen to the point that it was touching the back of my tongue.
Ah, so I'd spent all day trying to cough out my uvula.
Luckily it stayed in.

Since strep is bacterial, the first thing everybody wants you to do is a course of penicillin.
I'm not a fan of antibiotics, so I decided to see if I could
just ride it out and strengthen my immunity against it.
Not really any cold symptoms, mainly just
a very sore throat and pressure headaches.
So for the last four days it's been very painful to swallow anything,
but since my wife is an amazing cook, I ate whatever she was serving.
Cough drops were not helping much, and I tried three different kinds.
I did get considerable relief from hot water with lemon
juice and honey, so I've been sipping a lot of that.
Plenty of Nyquil and ibuprofen to help me sleep through it (those are natural, right?).

Finally this morning I woke up and was able to swallow without wincing.
Throat is still a little sore, but definitely feels like it's healing.
No more white spots, just redness, and my uvula is shrinking back to normal size.
I've been carefully trying not to infect the rest of my
family, and so far none of them seem to have gotten it.

Sounds like you caught a particularly vicious strain. Glad that you're feeling better.

Getting sick just plain sucks, especially if it's something like strep throat or the flu.

Hope you get to feeling all better soon.

Salt water gargle also helps with sore throats.

I would caution about letting strep go very long. My son had a bout a couple of months ago. He said he had a sore throat and waited a couple of days for it to go away. When it did not go away and got worse he went to urgent care on a Sunday. They gave him antibiotics which he took and felt better the next day. However, the following day (2 days after going to urgent care), he woke up and his throat was swollen on one side, he couldn't turn his head, and his throat was really, really sore. So he went to the doctor. Turns out he had an abscess and the doctor had to lance it and drain it [yuck]. My son figures he waited a little too long to go to the doctor for the antibiotics and by the time he started on them, the infection was too far along for the antibiotics to work effectively. My son is generally very healthy and does not get sick often.

I had this last year on my birthday. Felt like swallowing razor blades. I feel for you. Warm salt water worked the best.

Blessed indeed!
Took me a couple more days after my OP to completely get over it.
The greatest blessing is that no one else in my family got it.
I have no idea how I got it, but hopefully I'm now more resistant to it.
