I am all for helping people in need who cannot help themselves.

Saturday before the super bowl, my wife and I were in Walmart to pick up a few things.
Two ladies in line in front of us had a cart full of chips, dip, frozen pizza, frozen wings, sodas, etc. Over $200 worth.
They were talking about the super bowl party they were having Sunday PM. Was shocked and angry when they paid for all this party goods with food stamps.
Why is this allowed?

What constitutes being poor and in need today?

First off, you should be ashamed of yourself, criticizing these poor needy people for buying all that nutritious food for their starving children, who I'm certain get free meals at school, also.

You MUST be a Republican, to be so heartless and unwilling to help those who simply cannot help themselves. Next you will be saying we need to have more accountability for all of the billions of dollars given away in "entitlement" programs. Everyone knows there is NO need for that, because there is NO fraud in our entitlement programs.... just needy, hungry children, needing help.

Now, back to reality. I imagine MOST of us can cite examples just like that, along with the same people jabbering away on their latest version of I-phone, being careful not to damage their professionally manicured nails, digging in their Louis Vuitton purse for their "food card". Then insisting on having help carrying their two carts full of junk food out to their new Escalade.

We see it frequently. How to stop it? My suggestion is "cold turkey"....

First of all, they aren't called "food stamps" anymore. It's now "food benefits". And it's money that has been specifically allotted for people in need of help with buying food. They have certain guidelines, but most of what is edible and drinkable (not alcohol) is considered food.

For myself, mine go into an account and I can draw out however much I need. So what if they used their food money? That's what it's for after all. TO BUY FOOD with. :)

Just because someone has professionally manicured nails, or a Louis Vuitton purse, doesn't mean they're rich.. Maybe they do their own nails, and found the LV at a yard sale or in a free pile or even given to them..

Did you even "READ" Spoon July's post,?it was "Junk food" not "nutritious food" for their children, hence his "shock and anger" toward them using their food stamps/food benefits for that stuff wastefully.

hmmm yeah I thought a little on that idea but well this a more "serious" conversation,Willie had that kind of humor and it was rather "unfruitful" I'm a joker too but there has to be a time to be serious especially when someone's looking for a "serious answer".

Well it's not something that's really your business though I understand why you'd be upset, unfortunately anyone with whatever benefits can waste them on parties and etc.

Probably like an EBT debit card.. They don't use the food stamp booklets anymore...
Kind of the point. Until I was on food stamps, I thought they were credit or debit cards. They look the same from a distance, so kind of wondering how close you have to be to tell the difference.

Some stores used to give out a quantity of stamps based on the purchase price that you could redeem for neat gifts like a Monopoly game or a lamp for your end table. Maybe some still do.

He led in with two paragraphs of sarcasm, then he came back to reality in the last. He is right about the entitlements programs being abused. They put the food stamps on cards, but people still sell them for cash.

They CANNOT still sell them for cash. The card they're given is basically a regular debit card, but specifically for food.. They can't sell the card.

I've seen this done. What happens is a certain amount of cash is given for each dollar on the card. The person gives the cash. borrows the card along with the pin number, spends what is on the card and then gives the card back. Easily done, happens all of the time. Some disreputable stores will also make fraudulent scans and gives the customer a certain amount of cash back.

It's called SNAP.
