I am happy to live in my quiet corner of the world. More often than not I leave it unlocked. I don't have a gun and couldn't dream of owning one. I leave the car unlocked. I have an alarm I never use. And I feel protected. For me it is strange to read about the discussions here about the right to be armed. Like it is a Biblical thing. I don't know. Perhaps I am naive.
Well you're looking at it from a perspective representative of where you live.
My guess is that culturally, where you are, there is less diversity and more unity. Governmentally as well.
On the other hand we in the US live in a population founded largely on diversity. Our country is founded on a mix of cultures and influences.
Also we have had, and to a lesser degree still have, a government aimed at splitting the country. Also a media working at the same thing.
Due to all of this it also means a lot of clashing opinions and beliefs. And with the divisiveness of our government and media it fuels these differences, rather than help to resolve them.
There are simply a lot of negative influences and violence is on the rise. Some people seem to think guns play a large part of the blame. Some thinks guns are needed for protection. Both sides have valid points.

Really CC is a lot like the US. We each have lots of freedom. With that freedom it opens up chances for opinions to be more varied. With that comes more disagreement. With that things become more heated. With that it causes people to snap and act out.

Toinena, you are at peace with yourself, a quality that most people do not have. You are most fortunate.

Like Jalen Rose said on ESPN: Everyone gets a chance to eat except the players, yeah the get free scholarships but academic students also aren't bound by the NCAA they can have jobs, internships, start businesses etc. Scholarship athletes don't even own the rights to their own name pretty much they're chattel disguise as student athletes.

I grew up in South Texas...like 5 minutes away from the border. We were taught to always lock doors and stay indoors after 7 PM. It can be dangerous. I'm glad I got out of there but yeah...we had to be careful and I can imagine it's worse now. You are blessed to be there. It sounds so peaceful.

Even though I'm in a better area now...I still always lock my doors and never leave things like bikes outside because that's the way I grew up.
Check out the movie "Freedom Writers." That's how the Rio Grande Valley is.

An interesting song I found in my collection:

"Cause it's a phrase that brands the heart..."

To constant live in fear is difficult and shapes your life and the way you think. I have lived in fear in my marriage and also when I lived alone with a violent, autistic son. So to be able to be free from that is wonderful and a true blessing. I have never lived in fear from "outer" threats, though. I guess that will shape you for life.

Has anyone here ever tried to save change in unusual containers? I was introduced to a "Dime Challenge" where I only put dimes in an empty 2-liter bottle of pop. It's gotten addicting!

Four full days on the road, two full days with my family in Oklahoma, one near-fight with my sister, and a ton of coffee. So glad to be home.

Except. One of my chickens died.

Except. My old cat is in bad shape.

Except. There’s a mountain of luggage and laundry to sort out.

And...I miss my grandma. She’s a beautiful pianist and she played for us while we were there. The nostalgia...and wondering if this was the last time I’ll ever see her. I just...She made the family all take some of Grandpa’s guns. She hated having them in the house without him there. She’s going to get a dog, she said, and a new car. And she was just so lost! She couldn’t get everything to fit in the fridge so I sorted it out for her and she said she guesses it will be a lot emptier from now on. She cooked Grandpa’s breakfast nearly every day for 64 years. And now she’s lost, and our entire family is just aching for her.

Compared to all that, scooping up a dead chicken on a shovel in the dark was a piece of cake.

Howdy MissCris (I keep having to remind myself not to put an h in there... why can't you be MissChris like a normal person? ;p ) It was hard on my Grandma too, for the first few years or so.

Is this a way-to-save-money challenge or a charity fundraiser?

Today I brought my van into town to have it worked on by the only shop here with a really good reputation. I was hoping it would be a fairly quick thing, they’d look at it, be able to fix it, and we’d be on our way.

Of course I know that’s not how this works. So my daughter and I walked across town to my mom’s house to get out of the cold and have somewhere to waste the day while we wait.

We took a route that I’ve walked hundreds of times (maybe not hundreds, maybe only A hundred. Whatever, I’ve walked it a lot), and that’s when I realized...

I left the coffee pot on. And forgot to feed the cats. And forgot to put on socks and brush my teeth. The house probably won’t burn down, but the cats will knock over the trash can and make such a mess that by the time I get home I’ll be considering burning the place down myself.

I don’t know where my brain went, but I miss it and hope it comes home soon.

I am so sorry for the loss your family has experienced, Cris.
