Baptism: is it required to be baptized in water?

You say that as soon as a person repents that he receives the Holy Spirit. I beg to differ with you because in the 8th chapter of the book of Acts they all believed and they were all baptized but no one had the Holy Ghost. Peter and John had to go down and pray for them and then they received the Holy Ghost. It seems that when you say that the scriptures are not understood by those who are natural and unconverted that you are talking about yourself.

That's because you are misinterpreting Acts 8. You have not made the distinction between receiving the Holy Spirit to the quickening unto eternal life and the filling of the Holy Spirit to labor in the Lords work.

Men cannot be saved by water baptism. Men can only be saved by the quickening of the Holy Spirit. John 20 show the Lord Himself breathing on those disciple the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost those same disciples received a filling of the Holy Spirit to do the work the Lord had for them.

Just how did you come to know the Lord? By baptism or by belief? By grace through faith apart from works? Did the Lord draw you by convicting you of your sin, His righteousness and the judgment of God upon sin?

Water has nothing to do with Holy Spirit baptism. Salvation has nothing to do with water baptism.

When a sinner repents and receives Christ as Savior he is Holy Spirit baptized and the Holy Spirit remains as a gift or a seal of his redemption.

Interesting that the scripture teaches that the things of the Holy Spirit are not understood by those who are natural and unconverted. I hope you are going to emerge from your confusion and fully comprehend the Holy Spirit in the conversion of sinners into Saints.

If we want to know what is required for salvation, we must look at approved examples found in the Scriptures. The conversion account found in Acts 2, of the conversion of 3,000 Jews is the first record after the resurrection of our Lord.
(1) they heard the message, the gospel, the word of truth. (Acts 2: 37, 40)
(2) they believed. (Acts 2: 44, 41)
(3) they were pierced to the heart. (Acts 2: 37)
(4) they repented in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins. (Acts 2: 38; Luke 24: 47)
(5) they were baptized in water in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins. (Acts 2: 38)
(6) they called upon the name of the Lord. (Acts 2: 21)
(7) they received the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2: 38, 39)
(8) they were saved. Acts 2: 41, 47)

Does this tell us all we want to know about the way of salvation? Of course not. but it is a solid, approved beginning.
We can use this account to add information to it from other conversion accounts and other Scriptures. We are all saved in the same way, by the grace of God. (Acts 15: 11)

Receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit is the baptism that remits sin. We are baptized into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit and we are never separated from Him again.

Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

The promise of God is not in water but in the Holy Spirit.

Correct.... we have to read scripture as it was written, and put it in perspective of who it was written to...
I think it is at the culmination of what we were told to do. Believe and be baptized for the forgiveness of sin... Just like Jesus and Peter said.

Because those address another point. We then look for another scripture which addresses ...baptism...many are there.

Jesus taught baptism, for a reason. If we try to remove that, or render it as just some "simple sign", then we have told Jesus that we know better than him what we should do to be saved. I will not do that, nor will I teach it.

No amount of twisting and parsing and conjugating can take away from what Jesus and Peter SAID, and what all the apostles taught and practiced.

That brand of soda pop was popular when I was growing up in Detroit. Not sure about whether being baptized in Fanta will work. Perhaps Perrier water. It's my beverage of choice. It's got a good mineral taste and is fizzy. When I was baptized as in infant the priest just sprinkled holy water on me. Not sure if he used Perrier. It could've been Dasani for all I know. I would never know the difference.
