I find it helpful before I post to ask myself a question, am I posting to edify God or uplift a brother or sister or am I posting to show my superiority? It is a slippery slope as we each have our own walk with God and each is so amazing and obvious to us that we just can not imagine how another could see it differently. I suppose I find it a bit easier as for 35 years or so I was a sociopath who would say or do anything to get what I wanted. That led to a very dark place. God tells me that He is strong when I am weak and that worldly wisdom is of no use. That tells me that when I do other than edify Him or uplift one of His children, I am letting my flesh win. He saved me from that dark place but how quickly I can forget that when I have a point to prove.

Here Jesus had just finished teaching the parable about the talents; these "Talents" equate to understanding the “Mysteries of the Kingdom”. His disciples would “have” and receive “more” of the mysteries of the Kingdom. But others who don't "have" and understanding of the Kingdom, even the little understanding they have will be taken from them (Jewish people that hear the Word of the Kingdom but don't understand) the wicked one snatches the word sown.

Matthew 13:9-11 He who has ears, let him hear.” 10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11 Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. 12 For whoever has (the Mysteries of the Kingdom), to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have (the Mysteries of the Kingdom), even what he has (of the Mysteries) shall be taken away from him.

actually that is not it at all

Jesus is not being mysterious...He is being practical...Jesus is not a mystic...there is another parable...parable of the sower, that deals with the word...the 2 parables in Matthew 25 do not deal with mysteries of the kingdom nor do they deal with sowing the word directly

the following, from post 49, explains in a concise and easy to understand way:

The Parable of the Talents (Mt 25: 14-30) was to teach Christians the meaning of FAITHFUL STEWARDSHIP IN THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, not self-centered asking.

And in that context, the Lord commended the faithful stewards so that the one who had been most faithful would receive even more opportunities for faithful stewardship. Hence:

For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

What the Lord is telling us in this parable is that slothful servants will lose what little talents, gifts, opportunities, abilities and resources that God has given them because of their laziness and indifference, and give them to the faithful stewards who are genuine servants of God and diligently labor in the tasks assigned to them for the furtherance of the Kingdom of God and the glory of God. This parable has absolutely nothing to do with our needs or our greeds.

That was certainly my bias for many years. It was surprising to me to read his opposition to the excesses of the faith movement, what he called hyper-faith, which I guess evolved into the word of faith movement. He said it was one of the hardest things he ever wrote. So I have gained respect for him because of that, even as I gained respect for Michael Brown (which I didn't have a lot of before) for his exposing the hyper-grace heresy. I still would probably have a hard time watching Swaggert, though.

yeah I get that

Michael Brown is an interesting character...seen him on a few shows...I appreciate people being able to change their POV...

Swaggart...old time Pentecostal...can't take it...well I don't like it anyway, when a personality is the ministry and everyone just follows along...if you know what I mean

we have had so many threads here about WOF...and healing being always in the middle of it

and then we have this thread, with one verse taken out of context by Prince...it's astounding to me (I'm not alone here either) that he can take a verse from that chapter and 'use' it...IMO, it is a perfect example of 'using' the Bible for your own gain

I know that sounds conclusive, but I think Prince is getting worse

Have you come across people who have little, yet even that little is taken away from them? On the other hand, there are those who already have much, yet they receive even more.

Jesus said, “To everyone who has, more will be given. From him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.” Notice that Jesus doesn’t go on to say what it is we have. He simply says, “But to everyone who has.”

Jesus is talking about a firm belief in God’s Word that gives one the courage to say, “I have it!” If you say that you have it, you have it, and more will be given to you. But if you say that you don’t have it, when you actually do because God has freely given us all things (Romans 8:32), then even what you have will be taken away—not by God but by the devil! The devil does not want you to walk in God’s blessings. So when you say that you don’t have it, he can rob you of your blessings because he has your agreement!

When you need something, God says that you are to ask of Him. And when you ask, believe that you receive it. (Mark 11:24) Say you already have it even if you don’t see it in the physical realm yet, and one day, you will see it!

God is not saying, “Oh come on, pretend that you see it. And if you pretend long enough, you will have it.” This is not a game! God is telling us to call forth those things which don’t exist as though they do. (Romans 4:17)

Today, we are talking about the haves and have-nots in the church. If you believe that it is yours, you will have it. You will see yourself possessing it and enjoying it, and more will be given to you. But if you say, “Well, I don’t feel it and I’m not sure if it will come,” in essence, you are saying that you don’t have it when you actually do. Then, even what you have will be taken away. So say you have it today!

I can see your points here. And that the enemy will ALWAYS seek to snatch the seed of God's Word in us before it has a chance to become rooted in us by faith. I also apply this for my own daily living and believe this has to do with our faith in what Jesus has done and what the Bible says is ours., and how I should walk it out today by faith. It's a daily challenge as each issue and tribulation comes from the world....the flesh and the devil.

I need to put my faith in what the Bible says Jesus has done and keep hearing and hearing it and reading it and saying it and knowing it to be true. Not allowing the obvious things seen with the physical eye to deter me from the promises made through Jesus blood. Romans 8:32 He who gave us His own Son ....

Faith can't be established from our flesh... our flesh doesn't understand about faith., So we have to walk it out in our born again spirit man in the power of the Holy Spirit. Notice the Bible calls this fruit.. the fruit of the spirit ... not fruits of the flesh.

A clue is in vs 14 - it begins with"and again..."
So you have to go backwards, because no one BEGINS a conversation by saying: "and again."

So you start in maybe chap 24 and read through to see where this teaching began, since it would not make sense to walk up to someone and begin a conversation with "and again."
 
And you find Jesus was describing the same idea with three different parables. He tells one, saying, at that time, the kingdom of heaven will be like thus and thus. And again, it willbelike thus and thus.
 
Why would Jesus use money/ talents as a metaphor for our gifts and abilities?

One talent is worth 20 years of a person's wage. So the master is enraged when his 8 talents only turn into 15?

How does this compare to our loving Father and Jesus who laid down His life for us?

Reading this through the current culture of economic success, where faithfulness brings reward and greed and productivity are a virtue is a problem, this is not the culture of the time of Jesus, which was more an honour/shame culture, not about gaining wealth.

If we remove our modern day society lens we would see that the master is actually quite harsh and greedy.

Jesus may be filling the role of the third slave.

The one who calls the master to account for his greediness, and who the master attempts to throw into the outer darkness, like nailing Him to the cross.

The parable is an indictment against works righteousness, which is the central message that Jesus continually to taught.


So I completely disagree with what Joseph Prince is saying.


Jesus had not ....and even more was taken away from Him... at the cross.

Your question was why people think the master in the parable represents God. That was what I answered to. ( I also answer to sweetie. :D)

I have given my opinion that I believe the talents represent our trust (faith). But that IS a gift.

If you read the parable, the master was not enraged at only getting 15 talents for 8. He spoke harshly to ONLY the man who had done NOTHING and had NO growth.

Only answered your first few paragraphs but dogs are barking gotta go
