Hi:

I have looked and looked and cant find this anywhere. So my questions are

1) What are rep points?
2) How are they given and what for?

Thank you.

Rep points are given when someone gives you a rep comment. They are given by clicking on the star icon at the bottom left of each post. You can leave a comment, or just your name so people know who to thank. :) If someone reps you, you gain as many points as they have in powers. For example, I have 433 rep powers, so if I were to rep you, you'd gain 433 rep points and probably about 3 or 4 rep powers.

There are many, many, many threads on this in the User2User Tech section, where such questions should go.

Well, had I been able to find that, I would not be saying "I looked and loooked and count not find. Large site.
Anyway, still dont understand what rep points are. I get the likes thing ... it's like an upvote. Likes should turn into reputation. No matter. I m not here to win a popularity contest.

Rep is short for reputation. (That's probably something you already know, but I never know when words go out of style, so telling just in case you didn't.)

It really isn't a popularity contest, but if you see someone who has participated for quite a while, and has none, or very few, it does give a moment to pause. It kind of hints that the person hasn't said anything worthwhile. It hints. Not to say it is true. But you can get enough likes that you do get another little green bar under your name. And likes are given as an "I liked that" or "I read that."

Reps are usually given as an "I really liked that." And when you get one, most people leave a comment, (that you can find), telling why. They earn you more than a single like, but how much more depends on who gives it to you. Somehow another it's based on how many reps that person has. The more reps they have, the more points you get toward another green bar.

Sometimes, jerks give reps to blast you privately, because, as you know, we don't have to leave our names when we do rep.

Does any of this earn you any special goodies from CC? No. It's more like having someone compliment you in real life. It matters strictly on what you think of the complimenter. If the compliment is hollow, it doesn't mean all that much. (Then again, anyone giving us a compliment on a bad day still tends to make us feel better.) If it's from someone you respect and know to only give compliments when it's truly meant, it is a good feeling.

But since you're relatively new and already have five reps after 100 posts, it tells me you are actively and positively participating on this site, therefore, not someone to brush off easily. That is how others might see it too.

Likes do NOT earn you green bars. Your post count does, when you reach the limit to your next power. It's the rep comments that help the green bars grow. :) Likes have nothing to do with receiving rep.

When you rep someone with your 433 rep power, they will for sure go up four points in rep power, and possibly five. (Although rep power does not show until a person has reached fifty posts, at which point they automatically receive a rep from the site.)

Big confession time. Until I saw this post I had no idea how to give Rep Points and have not seen any instructions. Now I know I will be dishing them out with the best of them.

Reputation power accumulates over time depending on how much you post (one automatically given when you reach fifty posts, and one per every thousandth post you make); how long you are here (one given every anniversary of your joining); and one added every time your reputation points total hits a new hundred mark, which you can see on the Settings page.

When you give a rep to someone, their reputation points total increases by your reputation power. You can give a rep with no comment, and anonymously, or leave your name with a little message, which will only show on the settings page for as long as it takes to get bumped off by new reps, as only so many will show at a time, unlike Likes, which you will have a permanent record of (unless a thread gets deleted). If you try to rep the same person before repping a certain number of other people in between, you will get a message saying you have to spread reputation around before giving it to that user again. You can only give so many reps every twenty four hours.

I hope that helps
:)

That's cuz she has her rep turned off.. And yes, green bars DO increase with post count, up until you reach 11 bars. :)

Her rep power says 588. The bars aren't about rep power either. Look up at Tanakh - he has rep power of only 85 but he has tons of green bars... I know what the bars are about but its a secret.

I thought something like 100 likes gives you a green bar.

The green bars are supposed to be brownies, but they used spinach instead of chocolate?

Everything I've ever learned about them was from other chat members... except for the brownies/spinach thing. I just made that up.

Once again, her rep is turned off, hence why her bar is gray instead of green. If it were on, we'd see her green bars.. Tanakh's rep is on, that's why we see his green bars. M has hers turned off.

Well, at least someone besides myself was helped by my post so it was not in vain.
