so I have been working on my heart about tithing, its been wreaking me because I have a desire to tithe but but i have this conflict.

any of the big churches I go to they are always asking for the funds for some building project or something that honestly is close to useless. one place literally just wanted millions to refab the sanctuary.. the small churches I can see it everyone pulling to pay the rent, but the pastor, Idk about justifying a salary.

all this being said i have turned to blessing ministers that i know with my tithe, either buying a gift(like a goatskin bible) or just giving the cash directly to them.

now i have had people start telling me it is un-biblical to do this and i have to give to the local church, but when i ask for a word on it the usually can't come up with anything concrete. so that being said what are you alls thoughts?

Two verses come to mind. The first tells us what basically tithes are for. The second is Jesus putting tithes in it's correct context of importance. I think this is a good place to start a study.

Malachi 3:10
Bring you all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in my house, and prove me now herewith, said the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Matthew 23:23
Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

Well, they are right, that is unbiblical. BOTH practices are unbibilical.

Start with the basics: the word "tithe" simply means "a tenth".
Now, the Commanded tithe, what is usually referred to in scripture and by churches is supposed to work like this:

  • There were 12 Tribes in Israel
  • Every Tribe had an inheritance of the land, except the Tribe of Levi.
  • Levi was the Tribe of Priests, responsible for Temple operation and offerings for Israel.
  • Because Levi had no inheritance in Israel G-D commands that each Tribe gives a 10th of their "fruits" to Levi.
  • This is so Levites could have both food to eat, as well as have offerings ready for offerings in the Temple.
  • The Tithe was LITERAL FRUITS; That which was grow of the earth in Israel.(included grains, oils, and wine)
  • The Tithe was NEVER MONEY
  • Money would NEVER have been accepted as a Tithe.
  • The Tithe was for the Levites to live on and for the Temple operations.
  • The Tithe was specific to being for the Levites.
  • The Tithe was specific as to who gave it; only those who lived IN ISRAEL.
See:
Deuteronomy 26:12-13
Numbers 18:21
Numbers 18:24
Nehemiah 13:10-13

If you want to bless your Pastor then by all means do so. If you feel led to bless the Church Facility with financial support then you are free to do so. But let us make one thing extremely clear: You are not biblically bound to give any form of financial support to either the Pastor or the Facility. And anyone who teaches such is either lying or is lacking in knowledge.

see that was my understanding, especially because of Paul writing about himself working. but God has moved me to bless others.(i have given $5 a lot to the homeless guys by my hwy exit lol)

Tithing was meted out by Israel as run by God.

It was the "civil" law for the chosen of Israel.

There can be no tithing today according to law
because there is no Theocracy.

However we are encouraged and free to help
the needy at all times.

Those who have a church building for worship
assembly should contribute to its upkeep when
economically feasible.

Finally, the congregation should care for its minister.
It is written a workman is worthy of his wages and
you should not muzzle the ox while treading out the wheat.
These sayings apply to ministers and preachers.

Tithing as taught today is an income tax. No such thing in the bible. Any giving that's said to be mandatory is a dead work IMO.

again i agree but i have one question, should we completely support ministers or just bless? i would understand supporting to an extent, but paul said he worked himself.

What changed? In Matthew 23:23 Jesus doesn't say to stop tithing. He said they should continue with the caveat to mind the more important issues first.

looking into the context, Jesus is saying they "should have". so you can say He was speaking in past tense, like since His coming there time with the law had come.

There is no command to stop tithing... nor is there a command to stop sacrificing animals at the altar. If you claim the first as a reason to continue tithing, you must also do the second, or be inconsistent.

As there is no altar at which to sacrifice animals, there is also no altar at which to offer your tithe. Tithing is of the Mosaic Covenant, not the new covenant in Christ's blood. Tithing is not required of Christians. Rather, we are to give as Paul teaches in the New Testament: freely, as you determine in your heart, to meet needs, regularly, according to your income, to support the church, and occasionally, sacrificially.

Read Galatians; you don't add tithing to faith to be complete in Christ!

Amen. But you forgot cattle (every tenth beast that passed under the rod). Everything that grows from the living seed is Yah's. Money doesn't grow from a living seed, so it's "Cesar's".

...And actually if you recall people were permitted to give money. They could redeem with money if they didn't want to give their true tithe from the seed. But they had to give an additional 20% fee on top of it.

Leviticus 27:31
And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.

----

And to your point regarding pastors teaching this tithing requirement; yes it's interesting that this same group will argue that the law is passed away. Yet they'll warn ppl to tithe from that same law or be cursed with a curse.

This nuance seems to be perfectly fine to have for them, but other nuances are called a "twisting of scripture" in an attempt to "place us back under the curse of law"??

Hmm..

Sorry, I went off topic.

now i have had people start telling me it is un-biblical to do this and i have to give to the local church, but when i ask for a word on it the usually can't come up with anything concrete. so that being said what are you alls thoughts?
Next time someone brings it up ask them if this is the third year out of every three that the tithe is to be brought into the storehouse of the temple for distribution to the poor and needy and the Levites, or whether we're in the other two of the three years where you consume your own tithe in joy and happiness and praise before the Lord.

I think you can give anyway you so choose as long as you are a cheerful giver!!! 2 Cor.5:6,7

Yes, silly me. I typed it up in such a hurry I overlooked livestock. But actually I think you are pretty on topic lol I would love to try that next time I attend I church service that calls for a "tithe", how do you think they'd react to that accusation being thrown in their face?

Anyone who is in a position to help should support the minister of an assembly, proviiding he or she truly ministers..

I believe i worked for three years spreading the Word in several states and in about a dozen countries. I worked where ever our Father gave me to work, and never took money from anyone, but that is I. I believe a true minister in a fixed assembly is truly worthy of his wages like any worker, moreso for he should be working of our Father.

If ayi person is not financially healthy, that person should not e expedted to give, not even be asked to give. Now, this is my thinking and not some kind of formula.........I do believe no one with financial burdens should need worry about giveng, others should concern themselves with him or her.

again i agree but i have one question, should we completely support ministers or just bless? i would understand supporting to an extent, but paul said he worked himself.

Tithes are still for Levites in the Temple.
The tithes were for the poor, the needy, the widow, and the orphan too. And the temple is where it was stored for distribution to these needy people.

The tithe for this purpose was only collected every third year out of three. The other two years you ate it yourself before the Lord in joy and thankfulness, but you were reminded to share it with the Levites and the needy too.

The Pastor is not a Levite. The Pastor does not replace the Levite.
Well, actually, they kind of do:

"because of the grace that was given me from God, 16to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the gospel of God"-Romans 16:15-16

The Church did not replace Israel, the Church is part of Israel.
While true, maybe a good way to look at it is natural Israel is a pattern for understanding the true nation of God's people, the church, the body of Christ. The passage I cited above giving us an example of that.
