Paul said in his epistle to the Corinthians:

1 Cor. 6:12 "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." I think in this instance, where he says under the power, he won't make anything to be more than God.

1 Cor. 10:23 "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not." So ask yourself: Is my participating in this helpful? It keeps you in shape does it not? Well then, it must be helpful and thus it edifies. Unless you must hurt someone, I don't think anything could be wrong with it. Of course, you will get a boxed ear and a bumped head but is that really hurt. I don't think so.

Perhaps you could give some context? You probably had a reason for starting this thread...

Offhand, I don't see any concern, as long as you can separate yourself from "combat mode" when you step out of the ring. If not, I'd suggest just stick with weight training. :)

Jacob wrestled with an angel all night (Genesis 32:22-32), so I reckon there's nothing wrong with MMA as a sport, as long as your not using it to roll strangers in dark alleys for money :)

Not for Christians. It is a worldly sport with the possibility of serious injury or death to the participants.

In speaking of soldiers (police nowadays) He says "They don't carry the sword (gun) for nothing." He set them up to keep peace in the land, and to hold people accountable. It is logical to assume they had training with these swords. Martial arts is another form of protection, and just as God authorised swords to the trained, anyone entrusted with such things must use them in a godly manner. David killed his tens of thousands in war, but did he kill civilians? No.

You need to decipher what is right. If a man slaps you- that is a spiritual battle. If a gunman enters a school- that is a physical battle. If a man tries to kidnap your child, and you can use martial arts to prevent that from happening, which is worse- for him to have bruises, or for your child to be raped, decapitated, and thrown in the river? Who here wouldn't call 911 in an emergency?

You need to disern between physical battles and spiritual battles. Jesus on the cross was a spiritual battle. David killing in war was a physical battle. Daniel in the lion's den was a spiritual battle. The israélites crossing the parted sea was a physical battle (you don't always have to be physical in a physical battle, you can duck out of the way).

His question was not about becoming a policeman/soldier, but about a sport in which he beats other people physically.

So you mean like hunting just for the hunt and not for to feed your family? Oh, like a boxer just for sport? No, I don't think God would approve of that or of even being in the audience to watch it. That's like in the bible days when they had games in the Colossium. Granted those ended in death, but it's the same mindset- who is entertained by that? It's not like watching a movie with fake blood. You are hurting someone just for sport. No, no, just no.

Well, the only difference I can see is that both men trying to beat each other agree with the match and have money from it.

In colossium, many people were slaves or put there without their will. And animals being hunt just for fun of people also did not agree with that :)

If a murderer and a suicidal person met online and agreed to play out a murderous scene, and money would even be paid to the victim's family, it would still be sin for all involved, even if concentual, including if there was an audience.

Sport means that both sides go into the match from equal positions and try to find out how is better :)

Your example is more about some devations that are compatible with eath other, obviously fatal for one side and not repeatable.

I see that you put things in perspective

it's amazing what perspective can do
