In English usage, the word, "grace" has several meanings (as it does in Greek). "Unmerited favour" is one of them. "A joyful, generous and encouraging attitude" is another. "Physical fluidity and muscular coordination" is a third, and there are others.

Arguing that it cannot mean one particular sense in any particular context is unnecessary. It is quite possible that it is used in one sense in one place and another sense in another place.

Yes I partially agree ...although one has to look at the etymology of the word.

"Unmerited favour" is from the 12 century definition of grace with much Catholic overtones, especially as it relates to Mary and the elevated Catholic saints.

If one looks at the word from an etymological perspective in the Greek, we see grace Greek "kharisma", relates to gratus meaning "pleasing, agreeable."

We read in the scripture states that Jesus was "full of grace and truth", "unmerited favour" is not the proper understanding of this word in its fuller meaning.

Certainly Jesus was not full of unmerited favour?

I think the "unmerited" is far over stressed and not found in the original classical languages like Latin where "gratia" simply means "favor, esteem, regard"

There is still a lot more Catholicism distortion floating around than we realize.

Calibob...If Jesus was full of Grace, unmerited favor, He would not be God...How could he ever not deserve the Fathers favor? My point is...Grace is NOT unmerited favor...To say that grace is getting the good things we do not deserve is nothing but another way to say "unmerited favor" which is MERCY

I so so agree the word has been so distorted over the centuries, I speak a Mediterranean language and my husband knew Greek "unmerited" is not in the meaning of the word. I would have to research it more for the etymology, however from my first review of this definition of grace being unmerited favour seems to come from the early middle ages.

I think the word unmerited does a real disservice to the character of God.

Jesus wasn't granted grace to keep for him self but to give away, to us.

From HELPS Word-studies:

Cognate: 5485 xáris (another feminine noun from xar-, "favor, disposed to, inclined, favorable towards, leaning towards to share benefit") – properly, grace. 5485 (xáris) is preeminently used of the Lord's favor – freely extended to give Himself away to people (because He is "always leaning toward them").

5485 /xáris ("grace") answers directly to the Hebrew (OT) term 2580 /Kaná ("grace, extension-toward"). Both refer to God freely extending Himself (His favor, grace), reaching (inclining) to people because He is disposed to bless (be near) them.

[5485 (xáris) is sometimes rendered "thanks" but the core-idea is "favor, grace" ("extension towards").]

So you're saying you don't find the truth very necessary? As long as you are happy? Well, they do say that ignorance is bliss....
I would put that it the context of avoiding arguments and was not referring to scripture or spiritual matters. There are those that just have to prove that they are right and the other party is wrong. I would rather concede the point rather that cause hurt feelings. In keeping with the tone and spirit of this post I am going to let your ignorant remark slide this one time.

it's interesting people believes it is the GRACE of God that if we sin we are given another chance.
GRACE is the ACT by God to give His life for us that we are saved!!
it is MERCY of God that when we sin we have another chance at forgiveness, not GRACE!!

I hate it these preachers are teaching GRACE, because they are the dumbest morons on planet earth teaching believers wrongfully!!

It could also be somebody being judgmental. You'll have to decide that.

when writing our replies to another's response to our post, well of course it always opens doors
to personal opinions, bias, experiences -
taking everything that others say personally is really kind of childish, especially when we see
ourselves repeatedly going on the defense -
recognizing this in ones-self can become a great step in growing, if we can see it...

what helped myself in becoming a much stronger, confident, servant was learning to
keep in mind 'first', what would Jesus do or what would He think about my speech/behavior...

Just ignore the power that raised Jesus from the dead that we might walk as He did? Yeah right! That is NOT the gospel.
The gospel is the "good news" of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) and is the POWER OF GOD UNTO SALVATION for everyone that BELIEVES.. (Romans 1:16). To believe the gospel is to trust in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ as the ALL-sufficient means of your salvation.

1 John 2:6 - the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. Jesus walked in love and obedience, which is the way we ought to walk. This does not mean that we live a sinless, without fault or defect, flawless, absolute perfect life 100% of the time (exactly like Jesus did). Believers do not ignore the power that raised Jesus from the dead that we might walk as He did. That is a straw man argument.

Jesus did not come to abolish the law but rather gives us the grace to fulfill it. THAT is the purpose of grace...and that we would go to Him for it in full measure.
We establish, that Christ fulfilled the Law. We establish, the Law and it’s righteous requirements are fulfilled in us through Christ. We establish, that Christ is the fulfillment of the types and shadows and signs. Therefore: we establish, that Christ ESTABLISHES the FULL revelation of the law, "its in HIM".

If one reads the following verses after Romans 3:31 in Context, Paul shows that Abraham was accounted as righteous through faith before circumcision and that righteousness in not for Abraham alone but for also those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 4:21-25). Jesus Christ is the revelation of the promise "seed."

John 1:17" - The law came through Moses but Grace and Truth came through Jesus Christ".

Thus Jesus Christ ESTABLISHED the truth about the law it‘s types shadows and signs and requirements. "Do we make void the Law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary we establish the Law." (Romans 3:31) Christ establishes the full truth to the law.
