Jesus kept the Sabbath. As the New Testament opens up with the gospel accounts, we see that our Lord Jesus observed the Sabbath himself (Luke 4:16),

16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. Luke 4:16

How is reading in a synagogue "keeping the Sabbath"?

That would mean for us to keep the Sabbath we must go to a synagogue and read some scriptures?

Nonsense!

I’ll stick with the NASB.
The message is still enlightening.Even should it be received from the Vatican approved version.

Luke 4
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Do you have the scripture for that? That the Disciples established Sunday as the day of rest.
There are many scriptures indicating that the disciples meet every Sunday for worship, breaking bred and collection of money for the lords work. This would suggest that they didn't go to work on that day, so it was a day of worship and reflection.

The Seventh-day Adventists do not believe that there is any scriptural support for worship on Sunday. Though there is no explicit NT statement authenticating Sunday worship, there are plenty of verses dealing with Sunday, the first day of the week, as being special, a day of breaking bread, and of gathering collections.
  1. Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week (Matt. 28:1-7; Mark 16:2, 9; Luke 24:1; John 20:1).
  2. Jesus appeared to the disciples on the first day of the week (John 20:19).
  3. Jesus appeared inside the room to the eleven disciples eight days after the first day of the week. The Jewish way of measuring days meant that it was again Sunday
    (John 20:26).
  4. The Holy Spirit came on Pentecost, the first day of the week (Lev. 23:16; Acts 2:1).
  5. The first sermon was preached by Peter on the first day of the week (Acts 2:14).
  6. Three thousand converts joined the church on the first day of the week (Acts 2:41).
  7. The three thousand were baptized on the first day of the week (Acts 2:41).
  8. The Christians assembled broke bread on the first day of the week.
  9. The Christians also heard a message from Paul on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7). Note: the reference is until midnight which is not the Jewish method of measuring days, but the Roman system.
  10. Paul instructed the churches to put aside contributions on the first day of the week
    (1 Cor. 16:2).
  11. Jesus gave the apostle John the vision of Revelation on the first day of the week
    (Rev. 1:10)

While scripture would support some of your listed events happening the first day of the week - others are not. But in any case they are not GOD-given instructions for sunday worship....which is entirely from people's OWN actions and decisions, in other words HUMAN TRADITIONS. .Even the Jews had their oiwn ideas of doing things and christians are no different. People are people and all are under satans influence, him being the 'god of this world (for now). 2 Cor 4v4.
All original Disciples handpicked by the REAL Jesus were obviously Sabbath-keepers and fully 'in tune with their Leader who also observed Sabbath and would never change !

If Jesus was the Lord of the Sabbath and He wanted His followers to continue setting aside Saturday as the day of rest and worship, wouldn't He have told His disciples not to do it on a Sunday as they had been doing with His knowledge?

And what about those scriptures which say, one man esteems one day above another. There are many arguments to support Biblical Sunday worship and at the same time there are no clear New Testament scriptures commanding us to worship on either of those particular days.

Sunday is not the new Sabbath.

The last day of the week was to commemorate a finished creation. (Physical)
The first day of the week is to commemorate a finished redemption. (Spiritual)

Does that mean we no longer practice the Sabbath? No, but we now practice it spiritually, not physically. It is called "The peace that surpasses understanding." Under Moses God's laws were obeyed physically, but under Christ God's laws are obeyed spiritually. "These were a shadow of things to come, the reality however is found in Christ."

Yes. If keeping the Sabbath means going to a Synagogue where people who reject Jesus as Messiah gather on Saturday to convince each other that the “messiah” is coming soon, then yes I’m missing the Sabbath on purpose.

There is no scripture that implies JESUS told His Disciples to 0bserve sunday...none whatever, nor His Followers. Rather we are told to ''follow his steps'1Pt 2v21. JesusALways kept His Fathers Commands and did not come to abolish. He was obedient unto death and never changed. All that is seen from scripture.
When we read about BELIEVERS gathering and starting to do their own thing it was much later...after Jesus and the original Disciples had been persecuted and killed and UNGODLY men had infiltrated the church/body of Converts, that sunday became the worship day....instigated by the RCC under threat of death if people continued in the ''jewish ways'.....still called so today by all who hate the Sabbath.
When it comes to Rom 14 there is massive MISunderstanding which also results in Sabbath-breaking. Paul never told people to choose their own day...rather he said ''that it was something SOME were doing. He never instructed any to follow them. Paul did say 'to follow HIM as he FOLLOWED CHRIST, which was obviously Sabbath-keeping 1Cor 11v1.
It is true in the NT we have no command specifically to keep Sabbath holy because we are now in the era of 'Grace .that needs not to be COMMANDED but obeyed through LOVE ! We should have matured to a BETTER way and relationship with God and Christ ...but it will never be without law and order. OBEDience to GOD will always remain or we will NOT be in His Kingdom Mat 7v21.

But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.
To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

1 Pt 2:20-21,23

His steps the first church was to follow was not keeping the weekly Sabbath, but to suffer and to take suffering as Christ did.

You like all other mistaken Believers see the Sabbath as something JEWISH....have you never read how it is ''the Sabbath of the Lord ? A special Day HE is Lord of ? Lev 23v3 especially mentions the 7th Day....and it is to be kept HOLY Ex 20v8. It does not have it's origin with the Jews but GOD !!!

So that is what we need to FOCUS ON...not what the Jews did or did not do on that day.....that causes people to get a skewd impression of the Sabbath and turn them against it. This when taken spiritually at it's source is turning people AGAINST GOD !. Can you not see the deception it creates ? Jesus warned against being deceived and it happens when we focus ON PEOPLE and what THEY do INstead of GOD !

So you are making a difference between HOW persons are made to suffer ? You think Sabbath-Keepers suffer LESS when they are insulted and called names and falsly accused ?
Jesus was 'railed against for speaking the truth and is no different for us today !

The text you are referring to has nothing to do with keeping Sabbath. You need a better one.

This is quite a depressing read, because I would like to say that you are mistaken or that you have misunderstood the scriptures, but the truth is I can't argue against what you've said.

I spent a bit of time, looking to the pro's and con's of Sunday worship and found a minefield of different views. I had to retreat without taking a stand and I don't like doing that, I like to be on the winning side all the time. But on this matter, I don't see a clear winner.

I'm actually disturbed by my findings, I read that the Roman Church changed the "Sabbath" as the day to set aside for the Lord to Sunday, I am vehemently opposed to Romanism. I don't want to be seen as going along with their Pagan feast days.

I haven't reached a firm decision in this matter, so I will take my time and learn as much as I can before I make a final decision about it. I spent around 6 months in a SDA Church, they convinced me that they were a truly Biblical Church.

It wasn't until I found out about their founder Ellen White and her extra Biblical revelation, that caused loud alarm bells to ring in my head and I got out of there like a bat out of hell. I have been shy about this issue since then, but I have to revisit the issue and put it to bed once and for all.

The teachings of Ellen White and the SDA church are problematic to say the least. Look what they teach about the Sabbath, Sunday worship and the mark of the beast!

Two main things I glean from your comment:
  • You love the sabbath
  • You think people who don't observe the sabbath don't love GOD
My conclusion is that your understanding of GOD is carnal. The purpose of sabbath observance was to know GOD. If people know GOD through the indwelling holy spirit (which those under the law did not have, and thus needed a special day), then who are you to judge their relationship with GOD?
