I’m an old soul, but yes it matters! If they really want to marry you, they should put some effort into it. The time they spend planning on how and when they’ll ask, the type of ring (even it’s from a bubble gum machine) shows they’ve put some thought into it and it’s not an off the hip statement.

No. Not unless I explicitly had to. I'd just propose. I've yet to date anyone where asking their parents was expected.
Then again..after ASKING the parents..BOTH the guy n girl had to ABIDE by thier descision..even if it was "no"...ok..im not THAT old but it happemed in my grandparents generation...my grandparents resolve when HER parents said "no"...ELOPE! Lol
You've been with the wrong folks then. I open the door for my grandma, aunts, uncles, even strangers.That's how I was raised. If a gentlemen opens a door for me, he is thanked. That's the Texas way. My son's would run ahead of me to open doors for me. both son's still do. To me it is a form of honor and respect, where I'm from it is both appreciated and reciprocated.
I like oldschool. I think some of the traditions can be taught to the newschool lol.
I never told my husband I wanted him to ask my parents. One day, we happened to be talking about the future, and he said he would talk to my parents before proposing.
Because power tools and moving engine parts have a nasty habit of taking fingers off if they interact with rings at high speed. In the absence of a ring, you will more likely get a damaged but repairable finger.
