I just watched Love and other drugs (the movie) yesterday. It might have nudity and sex, but the thing that really got to me was that the guy was in love with some one who had early onset Parkinson's disease. My ex-boyfriend had very mild Cerebral Palsy and except for a few tremours and very slight limp no one would know that he had CP. I knew very well that if I had decided to live my life with him, things would have been extremely tough in the future. People with CP have a sucky quality of life in their old age. I am ashamed to admit it, but that certainly made me wonder sometimes if I should be with him. I didn't break up with him for that reason though. I broke up with him because he was a hardcore atheist and often made fun of my faith. I probably cried during all of the movie because it is so hard to see some one you love suffering

My question is, Would you fall in love or be with someone who had an incurable but non-fatal disease? Or someone handicapped? What does the bible say about this?

I would live with someone who had a handicap or disease. If I love someone it doesn't matter to me what they have or what I would have to endure to be with them and I try not to write off anyone because I always try to see the beauty inside each person. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is when Jesus said "when I was sick you looked after me...when you did this for the least of my brothers and sisters, you did it to me." (Matthew 25:36-40)

God bless you for accepting someone with a disability. I think that most people would not.

Really? It does in mine. What dictionary are you using? ;)

I know, For God nothing is incurable. But there are some diseases that God doesn't think is the right time to find a cure.

Isaiah 53:5
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

We're all made perfect in the image of god, right? Surely God didn't cause the disease, but we know who did. I'm not saying we will be perfect in this life, but we will become more and more who God created us to be. It isn't God's will for his children to be sick.

That's not exacty true...

Incurable disease mentioned in the bible:

The LORD will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed.
(deuteronomy 28:27)

God does put sickness upon people:

And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.
(2 Samuel 12:15)

Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.
(Deuternonomy 28:59)

I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand.
(Deuteronomy 32:39)

[ The Workers Are Few ] Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.

Also, there's a difference between God allowing sickness to happen, rather than him being the cause of it.

These forums have so many scavengers looking to bring his children down with faithless posts. May I remind you that he died on the cross for everything, not part of it.

About living with someone who has a disease/handicap:

For me, it's a case by case kind of a thing. I think I would ask myself the following questions:

1.) How much will it effect our quality of life? Physical/emotional intimacy, finances and the every day hurdles of living. I would have to weigh it out and consider it- what I could sacrifice and what I don't think I could.

2.) How emotionally mature is my boyfriend? There is a lot of loss and frustration with disease and with that often comes bouts of depression, anger, and sorrow. Does he handle those in healthy ways?

3.) Am I mature enough to handle the pain(in right ways) of watching someone I love go through such pain on a continual basis?

It would definitely be a hard thing. But Joni Erickson Tada, who is paralyzed from the neck down, is married, so you never know.

I don't think I would have a problem living with someone, but then you never truly know until GOD places you in that situation. HE will never give you more than you can handle.

I am on the other side of this, though. I have a disease that I don't want anyone to know about. It will change the way people look at me and treat me. I am not ready to be the person people lower there voice to talk to. It is nothing contagious but the survival rate is less than 20% for this type of disease. My family doesn't know and I am not sure I want them to. The only person who I want to know, could care less about me now. I am glad GOD removed her from my life because the next 2 years (If I am lucky) are going to very hard. I wouldn't want to see her suffer like that or anyone in fact. I will keep this secret as long as I can then I will see what GOD has in store for me.

Faithless posts? I don't know who you are referring to but all I did was point out scripture that shows that God does in fact inflict disease if/when He chooses. The devil is not the only one who can do this. You can't say that He doesn't when scripture says He does. You also can't say there is no such thing as an incurable disease when scripture says there is.

God injures, but he bandages. He beats you up, but his hands make you well.
(Job 5:18 God's Word Translation)

My point is that God does not need the devil to do his dirty work. If only the devil could inflict sickness, then that means the devil can do something that God cannot, and the scriptures show that God can indeed inflict sickness. Why am I arguing this in here? Maybe because I'm bored.

Sorry to hijack this further, but here's one more thing I want to say then I will leave this alone...

If God cannot inflict sickness on people, then He would actually NEED the devil's help when He wants to make people sick, then that would mean that God is dependent on the devil for something and we all know that can never be the case.

I don't see how any case can be made that God doesn't cause sickness. From the very beginning our lives were cut short, pain was introduced and condemnation has been brought about for disobedience on numerous occasions. Jacob's hip was wrenched while wrestling with God and he limped the rest of his life. I am also going through a sort of physical affliction that was brought about by my fathers and my own sins. God uses these things to test us or correct our behavior sometimes. I am grateful for the lesson my pain is teaching me. Praise God even in suffering because it has a purpose like everything else.

Not trying to bunny trail, I just have to speak up.

Healing is much more complicated than "God wants us all to be healed from every sickness."

First, take a look at Lazarus. Jesus allowed him to get sick and die. Jesus didn't heal Lazarus from the disease, instead he let the disease take his life.

Then Jesus brought him back from the dead. Ultimately it brought more glory to God and furthered *His* Kingdom to intervene after the death of Lazarus and bring him back to life, than to heal him from his sickness.

But even after considering that, you (Vahn) could say to me (Ice) look at Isaiah, 1 Peter, Psalm and Matthew (and many many more scriptures) - God heals!

Yes, Hallelujah and Amen.

But it's not an easy thing.

Ultimately healing, like sickness, comes in a variety of ways. Sometimes it's quick, like when Jesus spoke to the man to get up and take his mat and walk. (John 5) Sometimes it happens over time, like when Jesus rinsed the man's eyes with mud. (John 9)

People who are are battling disease don't need anyone to say to them- God wants to heal everyone, so if you aren't healed you don't have enough faith or you must be in sin or you must be demon possessed.

All of that just adds to their burden and despair. If we really believe that God wants to heal people, then we as Christians have an obligation to intercede for others: pray, pray and pray. We must share their burdens, love them, listen to them and walk with them.

Talking about healing and walking it out are two vastly different things.

1~ God LOVES US; it is NOT His will that any be sick or perrish
2~When every God put illness upon someone, it was because of their unrepented sin; Just as He gook David's firstborn because of David's sin...though he repented it was the CONSEQUENCE and payment for that in. As for Job, it was God that allowed it, but Satan that caused it.
3~Jesus shed His blood, died and rose so that we could be FREE from all illness and disease. His whole purpose in doing what He did was so that WE could live in the freedom that Adam had before he sinned in the garden. The shedding of His blood is the price He paid for us so that we could use the AUTHORITY that He gives us through salvation to break curses, cancel demonic assignments and speak forth and into existance HIS KINGDOM.
IF a person is sick, it is because there is a spiritual reason. It is NOT because we live in a 'fallen world'. All is perfection except for in the heart of man. The world is 'fallen' because man is in it.
Hos. 4:6 is reiterated at least four other times in the OT. These statements are spiritual truths that do NOT expire with the Cross. They are eternal.
Prov 5:23,7:7, 9:16, and 10:21 all say in one way or another that people perish for LACK OF KNOWLEDGE or WISDOM....Wisdom being the ABILITY TO USE the knowlege that one has in a manner that will benefit all concerned.
The CHURCH has falled far short of its responsibility in teaching the deep truths of the Word of God. They NO LONGER (but are finally getting back to) teach that by our WORDS we have authority over evil. Using that authority is what MAKES US OVERCOMERS. It is the OVERCOMERS that will enter the kingdom for eternity: 1 John 2:13, 14. You ARE an overcomer IF the word of God ABIDES in us...IF JESUS abides in us. If He doesn't, we cannot BE the overcome and so do not have heaven.
Sickness is a CURSE; Is anyone ever happy about being ill? NO! They FEEL and are cursed with sickness. Prov 26:2 tells us that NO CURSE can land upon us or work IN us with CAUSE. That means that for EVERY ILLNESS of any kind, there is a spiritual reason for it to be able to take hold of our body.
Sometimes it is unrepented sin. Sometimes it is a generational curse that has opened the door to our souls...the sin of our ancestors and that iniquity being passed down to the 3rd and 4th generations of those that hate God (and so refuse to confess and repent). And gues what? If at that 4th generation, it is not confessed (see Dan 9 I think) and asked forgiveness for (and repented of if the suffering person does not repent) it CONTINUES all along down the blood line, generation to generation. It does not stop until...UNTIL we come into the knowledge that we have been given the right and responsibilty to USE what Christ shed His blood for us to have. HE IN US...we CAN, but most don't KNOW that we can...and the church now shys away from that saying "Heresy!" Which is exactly what Satan wants. The Word says we will do GREATER THNGS than Christ did when He was here...why aren't we donig them???
