I don't see the point. A proposal is so private, and to do so publicly is putting pressure on the other person.
With my ex, I am not sure if he ever proposed. We just agreed upon it. We did go on a restaurant date and put the ring on, though, to make it official.
I think it can be done both privately (even in a chat) but also in person. No need of flashlights, but it should be something you will remember for life. Going out for a meal together would be more than sufficient.

Husband and I were unofficially engaged for about a month before announcing it. He first talked with my dad alone (well... with my brother translating). Mom wasn’t present for the talk due to running an errand, so Dad wanted to wait til mom was present to officially give the blessing. A couple of weeks later, the 4 of us talked and agreed to announce it once we had an engagement ring.

We never engaged our parents in our plans. Just informed them when we had. We threw an engagement party after that, and got married the following year.
If I get engaged again.... I know he would make me feel like the most special woman on the Earth. He has his way of doing that.
To be honest, I was thinking the same. Maybe sometimes is the case (in the worst of cases), but sometimes it is because they feel more secure with more people around? (Makes no sense, I know, but sometimes is like that for some).Not just that, some people think is really romantic. For example, the boyfriend of a friend of mine prepared a song and everything to ask her to be his girlfriend during her birthday, with her friends and family surrounding them. Of course she said yes, but personally, I would never like something like that. If I ever get proposed or something, it would have to be something really original or being talked about and not an usual proposal, and especially never out in the public.
That, or maybe I'm too old fashioned
