Christ was buried in the late afternoon. He was in the tomb for 3 nights and 3 days. The tomb was empty Sunday. That means he rose Saturday late afternoon at the latest. Why do people assume he rose on Sunday when the Gospels never say that.
It does inform us of the first day of the week.

if your answer is no, then neither is this silly accusation that those of us who go to church on sun. ( the first day of the week, when Christ rose ), and sing songs about Jesus, talk about Jesus, watch folks put their faith in Jesus, etc.. that somehow that is really worshiping a pagan god.

Your Jesus does not fit the scriptural description of the real Jesus, your Jesus is an idol made up of man's ideas. You need to go to scripture to learn who God and Jesus is, and learn their characteristics.

It is probable that "3 days and 3 nights" was a Jewish idiom. It wasn't to be taken so literally as to account for every nanosecond as to interpretation.

I would suggest he was in the heart of the earth, a place where ones suffers a living sacrifice as the pangs of hell. The work of suffering unto death by giving ones spirit life for another began in the garden of gethsemane on Thursday when Christ suffering the pangs of hell sweat to show he was working suffering as if he was shedding literal blood in the parable

The scripture does not say 3 days in the tomb but rather he came out of the tomb on the third day. He was put in the tomb in the 2nd day.

Heart of the earth must have the same spiritual significance as the belly of hell, a living sacrifice...... our God pouring out his Spirit not seen on corrupted flesh .
Jesus stated when asked about the sign of him being the Messiah was the sign of Jonah. As Jonah was in the belly of the big fish so the son of man will be in the tomb for 3 nights and 3 days. He prophecied it and did it. The Gospels give the timeline of his Crucifixion burial and resurrection. 3 nights and 3 days.

He was put in the tomb the afternoon just before the Sabbath day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The last day of the Passover week. The tomb was empty Sunday. Using his prophecy the Passover Sabbath was Thursday thus buried Wednesday late afternoon at the latest.

Too many people seem to not understand there are annual Sabbaths in addition to the weekly Sabbath. Passover week starts and ends with annual Sabbaths.

You ignore what the Bible says about Jesus talking about his Crucifixion burial and resurrection. It definitely was not an idiom. It was the only sign proving him to be the Messiah. That takes it way out of being an idiom!!!

You keep ignoring the statement of Jesus in Matthew 12:38 to 42. He states quite explicitly it is the only sign of him being the Messiah. Therefore the time in the grave is extremely important. At that time when a prophecy was made in Israel and it failed to come true the so called prophet would be put to death. Trying to say it was not absolutely accurate means his prophecy might be false. Why do you ignore what Jesus explicitly stated was the only sign of him being the Messiah.

I am trying to find the understanding of the phrase "heart of the earth" used in parables in the old testament of Jonas "belly of hell" and the Son of man Jesus "heart of the earth" Just what those phrases both mean and how it is used in relationship to one another "belly of hell" and "heart of the earth".

Heart of the earth would seem to represent the tribulations of natural man as the wickedness of men. Christ coming as that Son of man coming to offer his body as a living sacrifice pleasing to the father who worked with the Son in perfect harmony to one another..

Again "heart of the earth" (not dirt where a person could not breath) would represent the imaginations of men who have no faith needed to hear God. It was given to both Jonas and Jesus as the Son of man .Both cried, both were strengthened by the father to finish the work.

Genesis 6:5And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

In both cases it indicates a living work of suffering. Christ a living sacrifice (Christ cannot die) and as Jonas cried out he was heard and was eased of his tribulation. The same applied to Christ in the garden the beginning of the three day threes night demonstration .

I would suggest it is the opening scene, closing the three day demonstration of the Spirit pouring out its life on Sunday, the first day of the week. The day God said let their be children of light, the new creation

I keep telling people on the board the same thing about the Sabbaths. Seems to go right over some of their heads. One poster took me to task asking me how I knew the specific date was on the Wednesday. Those seem to blind themselves to you just count the days and not worry about the specific date in a specific year.

For the purpose of this topic, "heart of the earth" is defined as the tomb or at the earliest to the moment when the Messiah's spirit left His body at the time of His death.

This topic is directed to anyone who believes the crucifixion took place on the 6th day of the week, and who thinks the "heart of the earth" is referring to the tomb or at the earliest to the moment when the Messiah's spirit left His body at the time of His death, and who tries to explain the lack of a third night by saying that the Messiah was employing common figure of speech/colloquial language. It is only asking for examples from the first century or before to support the idea of commonality. This is the one and only issue with which this topic is concerned. Threads at times certainly do get derailed. It is my opinion, based on scripture that Jesus was dead for literally 3 exact evenings and mornings which is how a length of day is stated in Genesis. There was also a high sabbath leading up to the Jesus dying on the cross so therefore Jesus did not die on 'Good Friday' but rather Wednesday evening before Sundown. He rose from the dead on Saturday evening before the start of the weekly Sabbath after a period of 72 hours or 3 days, and appeared on the first day of the week which is Sunday.

No one in the history of the church has proven that Christ died on a Wednesday, or a Thursday. All of these attempts are made to figure out the "3 days and 3 nights" Christ mentioned because of a difficulty with this statement and a traditional dying on Friday which is supported by Scripture.

Some believe it ("3 days and 3 nights") to be a figure of speech, and, that he died on Friday. Of course it is also believed to be the same with Jonah, a figure of speech. I'm not tripping out here thinking it had to be literal, to the very last second. 40 days is probably a figure of speech. 1000 is probably also a figure of speech, not an exact number. Consider this text; Psalm 50:10. Does this mean God only owns the cattle on a 1000 hills, and on hill number 1001 and so on, they're not his? Which 1000 hills are they? Which hill is number 1372? They have to be numbered, so which ones are which?

Now, if any of you care to prove it was literally 72 hours to the very second, I'm here to listen.

I'm contented with the possibility that it was a figure of speech. Some of you that can't think critically or accept figurative language and are on an unsustainable path to interpret Scripture accurately and consistently - much of what Jesus said was figurative and you'll have to deal with this. Insert fundamentalist posturing here "I only take the Bible LITERALLY and you are on your way to hell for taking it figuratively!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

This fact of figurative speech does not do away with one thing that he was saying in any instance. Note Matthew 13:13 and Matthew 11:25-30 for further thought.
