Your comment got me to doing some research on this, because I too have read where God is a jealous God.....
In searching the definition given by the KJV Dictionary, I found:
4. Indignation. God's jealousy signifies his concern for his own character and government, with a holy indignation against those who violate his laws, and offend against his majesty. Ps.79.
So, I went to Psalms 79.............
1) (A Psalm of Asaph.) O God, the heathen are come into thine inheritance; thy holy temple have they defiled; they have laid Jerusalem on heaps.
2The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
3Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them.
4We are become a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.
5How long, LORD? wilt thou be angry for ever? shall thy jealousy burn like fire?
6Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.
7For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his dwelling place.
8O remember not against us former iniquities: let thy tender mercies speedily prevent us: for we are brought very low.
9Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.
10Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is their God? let him be known among the heathen in our sight by the revenging of the blood of thy servants which is shed.
11Let the sighing of the prisoner come before thee; according to the greatness of thy power preserve thou those that are appointed to die;
12And render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.
13So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations.
Not really what I thought it meant. I always thought it simply meant that He was jealous of our love, and did not want us loving other gods more than/before Him.

Hi CharliRenee: interesting concept. God is love, God is jealous...
The way I see it, is that unlike other persons (created beings), God is the Creator. If He chooses someone (or an ethnic group), to pour His affections, blessings and the like, you better take that serious if you are the recipient.
Is important to understand, God is God, and we are not. We cannot take Him for granted, and act like spoiled children, He is not our toy, He is not to be manipulated nor ignored.
And most important, He is not to be betrayed.
To me the story of Israel, God and the Gentiles is a fascinating one. It seems like the children of Israel (God's) acted like spoiled ones, and mistreated God, His messenger, etc.
It was prophesied, unfaithfulness from Israel would make God turn to a Gentile Bride to make Israel jealous.
Gentile Bride of Christ, we the adopted children, of hard to understand tongue, and being no people. We did fall in love with Jesus, with God, and were awed and swept by HIm.
As painful as it should have been for Jesus to be betrayed by Israel, He found a real Bride, beautiful because willing to shine His light, faithful, because we understood He is everything, and not perfect to keep us humble.
That is a lesson for us all. Maybe someone does not appreciate us (their loss), but remember there should be someone out there that can truly appreciate our worth. God know who that person(s) is / are, and He can lead us to them.
So unlike other creatures (that mostly cannot tell left from right), rejection of God is real bad, because we are talking about the Alpha and Omega of all. He has all the right of being jealous if we shun His amazing love, because is not just any Being that is offering unconditional love.

umzza, John the Baptist dressed funny (not in fashion to put it polite), and ate weird stuff (as compared to what was usual and customary), yet multitudes went to him, and begged to listen to him and be ministered, and do you know why? because the glory of God was shining on him.
When God asks us to be Christlike, to walk in a manner worthy of the calling, to look for purity and holiness, He does it so that He can send His glory to our lives without hurting us. His presence requires best intentions, best wishes, unconditional love, purity, surrender, meekness, because any other way we can die.
Think about that, strive to receive the glory of God in your life, pray for it, think of the best, think of God's love, way above all this mundane existence, ask for HIs help, once His glory manifests in your life, it will be changed forever.
