English is technically a tongue ;)
It is known to us that speak it and unknown to those that dont. GOd gifts diversities of tongues...it goes back to tower of Babel, otherwise we would all be speaking Hebrew and there would be only one language for the entire of mankind.

It is not a rebuke.
Paul clearly says he prays in the spirit and with understanding
He sings in the spirit and with understanding
In other words there is an appropriate time for usage of each as indicated by the next two verses you neglected to include in your post:

1 Cor 14:18-19
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
An interesting truth.....Paul spoke at least 3 languages......and being educated probably 4 to 5.......in the Minimum he spoke Hebrew, Latin, Greek and probably Aramaic which is 4....

1st Corinthians 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with languages more than ye all............key word bolded ^^^^^^^^

Basics of speaking in tongues is broken into three easy steps.

Step 1 close the bible and only listen to teacher you adore, those having itching ears.

Step 2 empty your brain of all organized thought.

Step 3 open mouth.

For the cause of Christ
Roger
Roger, I thought you were better than this. This post is really beneath you.

Or maybe not.

And where does scripture declare that these converts did not speak in tongues?
Had these 3,000 spoken in tongues (as did the 120 or a portion thereof) surely it would have been recorded by divine inspiration. What happened that day was phenomenal as to the salvation of souls.
Especially with the examples of how things work in Acts 8; Acts 10; Acts 19.
Acts 8 must be excluded.
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
[NO MENTION OF TONGUES]
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. [NO MENTION OF TONGUES]
39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

But there were VERY GOOD REASONS for tongues in Acts 10 and 19 cases.

THE BELIEVING JEWS NEEDED EVIDENCE ABOUT GENTILE CONVERSION
And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God... (Acts 10:45,46)
[NOTE: Peter had to be strongly persuaded by God that the door of salvation was open to the Gentiles. His Jewish companions had the same mindset. Therefore both Peter and the Jews needed to see evidence of the baptism with the Holy Spirit for Gentiles]

JOHN THE BAPTIST'S DISCIPLES NEEDED TO SEE THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

ACTS 19
1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7 And all the men were about twelve.
[NOTE: Since they had not even heard about the Holy Spirit, God wanted them to see the power of the Spirit through (a) tongues and (b) prophecies.

too many times we see examples that are contrary to what took place in Acts 2, too many examples that flies against Paul's words concerning speaking words of understanding, etc.......

The word is LANGUAGES or LANGUAGE.......and what took place in Acts were simple men speaking in their own language and the people hearing in their own native languages.
Acts 2:4 disagrees with you.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Mark 16: (ESV)
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them;
they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.

I read this, I prayed to Jesus about this; I prayed for Jesus to lead me to his truth; Jesus directly lead me to a Bible obedient
Pentecostal church which has all these signs; operates its meetings in compliance with 1Corinthians 14; and enjoys all nine
gifts of the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ.

Now who should I believe? Jesus or you naysayers.

Is your revelation recorded in the Bible?
Yes
Jeremiah 31:
33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbour and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Sorry, Acts does not disagree.........and the point being....it was not some ecstatic rigmarole that is passed off as tongues is today.....LANGUAGES.............PETER spoke and they ALL heard in their own language....those with PETER spoke and they ALL heard in their OWN LANGUAGE......

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

How is that a Revelation seeing how it was given some 2500 plus years ago.....

Scripture is clear. Don't try to dodge the issue by pointing at red herrings.

You claimed that they were speaking in their own languages. Scripture says they spoke with other tongues, by the Holy Spirit.

Your position is simply wrong on this matter.

No...not hardly......you are missing the bigger picture and fail to acknowledge what is actually being said....Peter did not stand up and speak some 17 or 18 different languages....HE spoke and THEY HEARD in their OWN NATIVE languages.....and it is a hilariously sad truth that YOU and those which peddle tongues fail to biblically acknowledge....the one's dodging the issue are those that CANNOT acknowledge that these MEN stated clearly that they were HEARING IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE.....

Now this is what you expect me to believe.....the men with Peter ALL GOT UP and at the SAME TIME SPOKE IN 17 to 18 different languages in some big quagmire that NO one could understand..........HAHAHAHHAAHHHAHA NO wonder it has turned into some ecstatic mumbo jumbo peddled as languages today....is that what you all do?

Some 4, 8 or 10 people all get up at the same time speaking Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Sue Indian, Italian, French, Dutch, German, English, Korean, Japanese etc. all at the same time and the people ALL understand that....HAHAHHAHAHHAAHHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAH WOW that is a miracle...........

That the whole Pentecostal.. I need a sign before I will believe gospel, in a nut shell.

How much deadly poison have you drank?

I would say go to the foundation in the book of Isiah 28 .Did you read it an d pray about it also Like David said in the Psalms... destroy the foundation of a doctrine and what would the righteous do ?

Those sign are used as metaphors in those parables that follow after works that God performs . They accompany those who believe they are not a sign that someone's believes .No one is commanded to seek after any sign . Its an evil generation that does seek after them . Jesus says its a evil generation that seek after a signs and wonders gospel .

If you look to the foundation of tomngues (Isiah 28) and the law that helps aid in defining the sign of tongues its easy to see you have been deceived and would need to repent and believe the word of God rather than making it to no effect with this oral tradition of men .

I have given that challenge....and no one seems to want to take it up......if they can speak in tongues they can also drink bleach or antifreeze with no harm <---the logical conclusion based upon their push of Mark.......

Yes its called having a conversation. One spoke in their language the other heard it in theirs own And then the other spoke in their language and the first heard it in their own. The word of God is the interpreter in both cases. No private interpretations . Why trust the interpterion of another perhaps they are influenced by the father of lies and not brining the gospel ?

The logical conclusion is some like the drama show it brings excitement and wonderment to the flesh which they call a faith that follows. Showtime keeps them on the edge of their seat. Prophecy leads a person to believe God (.no outward sign)

They in there desire for show time say...

John 6:30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, "that we may see", and believe thee? what dost thou work?

Jesus knew better.

John 4:48Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe

Gills Expedition of the Entire Bible

For if I pray in an unknown tongue,.... In the Hebrew tongue, which the greatest part of the Jewish doctors insisted (a) upon should be only used in prayer; which notion might be borrowed from them, and now greatly prevailed in the church at Corinth; and the custom was used by such as had the gift of speaking that language, even though the body and bulk of the people understood it not:

my spirit prayeth; I pray with my breath vocally; or else with affection and devotion, understanding what I say myself, and so am edified; or rather with the gift of the Spirit bestowed on me:

but my understanding is unfruitful; that is, what I say with understanding to myself is unprofitable to others, not being understood by them.

(a) Vid. Trigland. de Sect. Kar. c. 10. p. 172, 173.

Why Is Hebrew Called the Holy Tongue (Lashon Hakodesh)?

"But as important as it is to speak, pray and study in Hebrew, it is much more important to actually comprehend what you’re saying and learning. It is for this reason that the Talmud was written in Aramaic. And it is for this reason that, despite all we have said, if one does not understand Hebrew, he should pray in the language that he understands."
Typical John Gill, I seldom can follow a word he says lol. Why couldn't Paul simply tell the Corinthians to pray in Hebrew?

Where does it state it is a sign......
Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying [serveth] not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. (1 Corinthians 14:22 KJV)

But I was asking in reference to the passage about praying in tongues...not speaking.

Yep......."LANGUAGES" A.K.A. tongues <---NOT for those which believe, yet practiced every week in churches of so called believers and not after the manner of Acts 2 where a MAN like PETER speaks and 17 or 18 different nationalities HEAR in their own language.....

I personally believe a honest look into the matter reveals the end of these things when the word of God was completed......and for sure, No one will convince me that the modern practice of some ecstatic jibberish portrayed as tongues and practiced by most today is of or from God.....
