I think I may understand what this means. That God protect us from temptation. Our Lord would not tempt us. Am I correct?

I agree that God will protect us from temptation as is stated in 1 Corinthians 10: 12 So the one who thinks he is standing firm should be careful not to fall. 13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.
James 1:13 tells us that God does not tempt us:
"When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; "

Matthew 4:1 – “Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted of the devil.”
God led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted. The Father didn’t tempt His Son, satan did. Jesus had to take on flesh because satan can only work in the flesh. Jesus was our example of overcoming temptation with the Word of God. Jesus did not sin. He overcame it.
Hebrews 4:15 – “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
Our flesh keeps us estranged from God. When we believe our flesh (intellect, instincts, ego) we are separated from God and we are walking in death. We are being led into temptation.
If we don’t want to be led into temptation, we can pray and believe God’s Word. "Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus." [Philippians 2:5] Jesus operated in the mind of God. We can operate in the same way. We can choose not to trust in our own flesh. We can deny our flesh. The battle is the Lord’s and He overcame sin for us. We can walk in that liberty with a renewed mind, Christ’s mind.
God doesn’t tempt us, we are tempted when we grow weak from our own carnal thoughts. The carnal mind/flesh denies God’s power over sin. But with the mind of Christ, we believe that sin is already overcome in us. This is faith. Not our measly conjured up faith, it is the faith of the Son of God in us.
I believe that praying, "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil," is the same as praying, "God, when I am weak, please don't let the devil have power to lead me to sin."

What it simply means is that God should protect us from temptations and the Tempter (thus "deliver us from evil"). Genuine Christians are under attack 24/7 by powerful spirit beings. Therefore we need this in our prayers.
I think the following scripture relates to the topic you have brought up:
2 Thessalonians 2: KJV

Can God send strong delusion to people, so that they will be caught up in the temptation of the wicked one? Yes..
But God always has a reason for doing so..
This passage is unrelated. It pertains to the 3 1/2 years assigned to Satan and the Antichrist, when God will indeed send strong delusion upon the inhabitants of the earth, so that they all will be deceived. That is because they did not love the truth, the Gospel, or Christ.
It has nothing to do with the Church Age, when Christians are under attack and need God's help.
Yea He gives us his armour, so that we know how to fight any temptation. He gives us an escape strategy. He warns us. And he can shield and hide us.
Sometimes I think its like workplace health and safety hazards. We can deal with them by eliminate, isolate or minimize them.
God delivers us from evil. And yes Jesus will destroy the tempter, satan, at his coming. Hes going to eliminate him. We have the authority at the present, to bind those demons, so they cant operate.
Its like putting safety cones and security tape around a hazard.

Temptation is a result of desire. If you know you are tempted by naked women and are extremely lustful then maybe you should think twice if you think the Lord is calling you to be a gynaecologist. However, God called Saul to be king which causes him to be tempted to anger and violence towards David. David was called and was placed in the position to steal Bathsheba and kill her husband. We are faced with everyday decisions that can go either way. Whether the internet is a tool for ministry or feed porn addiction is on you. Praying for the Spirit to guide us is a great way to get in the mindset to make the right call.

In vs 9 we are told to resist (stand, withstand) the onslaught of the adversary. Reminds me of that verse in James where we are told to draw near to God, resist the devil and he will flee (James 4:7,8). We're also told that we're not the only ones under attack even though we might feel as if we are.
in vs 10 we are told how God works in our lives as we resist, stand fast, withstand the afflictions we suffer at the hands of the adversary --- God perfects, establishes, strengthens, settles us as we turn our hearts to Him, never wavering in the face of our trials and temptations. Also notice that God does not tell us how long we are going to go through our trials. He just says after ye have suffered a while. There's another verse which tells us that our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory (2 Cor 4:17).
So, yes, you are correct to believe that God does not tempt us. However, He knows we will be tempted because we have an adversary. And when we are tempted, He helps us through our afflictions as He perfects, establishes, strengthens and settles us. We never walk alone in our times of affliction.

Those with the Spirit will be less tempted in intensity than the world, and not more than they can bear, which gives them an advantage over the world in abstaining from sin.

God would not lead us in to temptation, for He does not tempt any person, and it says deliver us from evil, and pray that you do not get tempted.
So it must be praying for God to not allow us to be tempted, although it will happen, and deliver us from the temptation.
