God chose to begin His spectacular creation in the presence of Himself (Spirit) and water---Significant? Most definitely! Everything recorded in God’s Word is intended to impart understanding. Let’s take a trip back to creation day and see if we can find possible foreshadows regarding the salvation components:
“In the beginning God created the Heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” Genesis 1:1-3
“And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.” Genesis 1:20-21
It is no accident that God brought His first creation from the depths of water. Also interesting is the fact that those who lead people unto God are called “fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19, Mark 1:17) After hearing the gospel message, obedient “fishers” draw men up out of water, during water baptism.
Notice the parallel between the birth of the world and the method God chose for mankind’s spiritual re-birth. According to John 3:3 “...unless a man is reborn he can not SEE the kingdom.” One cannot see unless light is present. How does light come? Light comes in the presence of the Spirit of God and water. For in creation, the Spirit of God moved upon water and said “Let there be light.” Prior to our water baptism we are in darkness. Light shatters the shroud of darkness as we break forth from the spiritual womb of water baptism and illumination increases when the Holy Spirit takes up residence in our human body. We know these two ingredients, water and spirit, are essential for salvation. Jesus expresses this principle in John 3:5:
“...unless a man is born of water and Spirit he can not ENTER into the kingdom of heaven.”
Natural birth - God created the natural birth wherein one bursts forth from the waters of the mother's womb and draws in surrounding air.
Spiritual re-birth - includes breaking the surface of baptismal water and receiving the infiltration of the Holy Spirit.
