What are your thoughts on re gifting.
Its when you receive a gift you cant use, so you give it to someone else.
Is it better to do this then to have it sit unused in your cupboard forever. Or..is it bad form to refuse a gift. What if the giver give it to you in such a way you cant return it.

Are some gifts better than others? Or maybe some things just arent meant to be gifts...there are a lot of useless things being sold as gifts these days. Is it better to make a gift than to buy it?

What is the perfect gift anyway? Vouchers that dont expire? Or maybe just a card. After all its the thought that counts. But then what about the crazy or useless gifts that are like...what on earth were you thinking??
 
If a person gives a gift then they should not act as if they still have a type of ownership of it..

Once i give a gift to another person then that becomes their Property to do with what ever they decide to do with it.. That can include giving it away to someone else..

Usually it is good form to give it away secretly in an attempt to avoid any discomfort that the giver may experience.. But in the end if they find out about it then it is also good form for them not to make a controversy out of what you have done..

I am mostly a practical person.. I love receiving Vouchers and the best vouchers are ones that can be used in different specialty shops..
 
Hmm... speaking of which, does anybody want a small tool set? Or a snake light? I have a few gifts that I will never use.

Speaking of regifting, scientists (for reasons still unknown) have tested some holiday fruitcakes received in the mail, and found some of them are as much as nine years old. Every year the current owners box them up and send them to somebody else I guess.

In related news, scientists have determined the shelf life of fruitcake is longer than the life of the shelf.

If it’s a gift that is super generic that I get at like a candle or a bag of candy, u think it’s fine to regift it. There is no way at that point to know who it’s from. But I always try to make it a point to give it to someone not in the same friend/family group so there isn’t any issue. Or for someone at work.

I actually had a Christmas white elephant thing where I ended up getting men’s old spice shampoo and deodorant. My mom ended up giving it to a coworker.

I wonder how many gifts I received have just been passed along countless numbers of people!

Books after I've read them I usually give away, but I always ask if someone wants them before giving them to people. Does that count as gifting, or is it more sharing.

What makes a gift a gift anyway, is it the fact its wrapped up and rude to refuse? Why do we even wrap gifts?

Isnt it better for others to know what you are giving?

For me, when I give, the person can do whatever they like with the gift. Although, if ends up in the op shop again well. Nothing you can do. Note..dont buy gifts from the op shop.

IVe had some odd gifts . One time a friend gave me a showercap. I opened the gift and there was all this random stuff shed put in there and there was this showercap. I asked her why did you give me a showercap? I never wear a showercap. What am I going to do with it? Another time she gave me a red pillowcase. No sheets to go with it or anything just one pillowcase. ?! Im thinking she just gives me random stuff she doesnt want thats lying around the house...?!

Is it...a paperweight? Why dont people just give rocks as gifts, or a brick. You can say...its a doorstop! A paper weight!

Actually I have been given rocks. For my garden. Maybe it will help if, when you give gifts. People say what they want you to do with it.
If I didnt have a garden, Im sure people wouldnt be giving me random rocks unless I could use them.

Red pillowcases though...? If you washed it with your white sheets, wouldnt they all turn pink?
Showercap? Who buys a showecap for someone, or is it just one of those random things you take from hotel rooms. Soap is a better gift, most people will use soap. But then it might be rude to gift to someone implying they need a bath....
 
Actually come to think of it, the people that gave me rocks were more thinking of themselves. They didnt want the rocks in their own garden.
 
I received some talcum powder from the gal who gave me the red pillowcase and shower cap.

I'm not a fan of the talcum powder as don't know what you would use it for. It's lavender scented, maybe I should just ask her. I know how to use bath salts, but the talcum powder didn't come with any instructions on the bottle.

Also, doesn't talcum powder cause cancer if it gets inside you? Maybe I should just google surely talcum powder can be used for other things, I'm not a baby, I mean can you make something using talcum powder? It's not just for babies right?

I don't think you can eat it. Maybe I should give it away to someone who wants talcum powder, but wouldn't it be weird asking if someone wants a bottle of lavender talcum powder, I don't know what to do with it. Its just sitting in the cupboard, unopened.

I suppose if I word it like this...hey you know that talcum powder you gave me for my birthday? What do I do with it? Can I sprinkle it on the carpet and make it smell like lavender when I vaccuum it up? Can I use it on my cat to make her smell like lavendar? You already gave me lavender cream and lavender bath salts and lavender bubble bath. Can I put it in the washing machine?

Sorry maybe I just google it. Most things come with instructions, this one didn't.

Huh..I don't have a baby, my shoes don't smell, am not a gymnast or weightlifter...don't wear makeup, don't have greasy hair, don't want to get cancer either. I dry myself with a towel, not talcum powder. I use a crystal deodarant.

Maybe I should just chuck it in the bin. Next time I should say no gifts. Please don't buy me anything. If you are going to spend money, save it, or if you want me to have the money you spent on the gift, just put the cash inside the card. You don't have to shop for me, I can buy what I want.

I get annoyed when I'm given stuff I haven't asked for, then I have to find out what to do with it. I make many trips to the op shop, maybe I should add this to the pile.

I'd like peoples input on this, whether they have this problem too and how they resolved it.
 
If I give a gift these days, I make it something to eat. Everyone I know already has everything they need and doesn't need more junk cluttering up their house. Give a gift of cookies or brownies or an interesting sauce or cheese or something. It can be eaten and gone and the only thing left is the wrapper to throw away.

I once was given a cookie that was shaped like Noah's ark and it had a lot of icing on it. It looked too pretty to eat and I don't like eating icing. Please don't give me cookies shaped like people either I'd just feel like a cannibal if I ate them.

If I were to specify a food, maybe give me some a herb spice rub or something so I can use it in cooking.
If you are going to give me some cheese, give me some crackers as well.

Please don't give me lollies or chocolate, as I'm not a sweet tooth. Please don't give me a box of favourites chocolates, because thats what everyone gives. Also you don't need to wrap them, they're already wrapped, plus, they come in a funny shaped box, so everyone can tell what they are anyway. If you gave me chocolates, I'd just open them and share them with you or give them to someone else, like pass the parcel.

Don't give me books either, as I can get them from the library.
You can give me vouchers for books or pay for a ticket to the movies, or buy me popcorn.

$20 should suffice, if you want me to get a bargain, $20 to spend at the Warehouse is fine. I'm sure people have done that. But sometimes people have things, but no money, and sometimes they have money, and no time to buy things. And I'm sure people have given me huge bouquets of flowers, that I've had nowhere to put, and plants that I have nowhere to grow.

But I was taught never to look a gift horse in the mouth or something like that, and it would be rude not to accept, well not in front of the person anyway. It's just that I tend to lose things or break them but thats more of a me problem than a problem with the giver.
 
Fortunately I do not foresee any occasion where I will have either the obligation or opportunity to get you a gift, so I don't need to remember all those rules.

i have regifted twice. the objects were not usable by me. both of them were still new in the packages. 1 was a Bible & the other was a plastic statue of liberty. nothing wrong in refitting. don't let the objects sit around unless they are marketable in the future.
 
Hopefully I'm also not the person giving dud gifts, but sometimes, I just don't know what to give, thats why I don't do secret santas anymore. If they say ' we're doing secret santa, the gift has to be under $10' then why can't I just give $9 cash?

Shopping can be exhausting if there's nothing out there.

What I'd rather do is a raffle, a gift hamper, or a pass the parcel. If its children, usually they are happy with a lolly scramble or something. For adults, most seem to be happy with a bag of chips.
I'd have giveaways in the library, and if a child won, they'd get to choose a book from a selection of books. I'd hate to give them a book they didn't want to read.

I often think that God knows how to give good gifts, but sometimes, its like you ask for an egg and you get given a scorpion.

I like gifts like spending time with someone I don't often get to spend time with, and if I don't have to drive, that's even better.
Anyway, it's just something I've been thinking of, cos I just don't like the whole 'obligation' to give gifts.

As they say, God loves a cheerful giver, and if you don't have anything material to give, you just give your time. I don't think its required of anyone to give. It's just tradition in a lot of cultures to give. Also if you don't ask, you won't receive, but nobody said anything about not asking for anything and then you end up with all these things you never asked for and can't use lol

People would buy it off you if it was new and they wanted it. Just give it to them for free, since you paid nothing for it.
 
I remember I was given a bag of cookies, but I couldn't eat a whole bag of them, but I saw another lady said her daughter loved those cookies, so we swapped gifts, as she was given a voucher for 20% off cookies which she gave to me. I then re-gifted that voucher to a friend, who lived near the cookie factory.

I don't think that was bad as the cookies were unopened in the bag, and it's better they were eaten than just sit there. Also the mother would have been happy to give her daughter the cookies, because she didn't have the time or money to bake them herself.

I think it used to be in the olden days in my country which is pretty antiquated and small population, they didn't have a lot of cookie factories and everyone used to do their own baking. Also, home baked cookies are much better than store bought ones, as you can personalise them. But as we know who's got time to do all that? Getting all the ingredients, measuring then mixing, heating the oven, mixing up the dough, baking them, packaging them, cleaning the kitchen....

If you haven't made them yourself I think they are much easier to pass on, and you can thank the cookie factory for making them for you. I think its better to re-gift a gift then SELL your gift for example. I think you'd have lots of bad luck if you did that. But maybe that's just me.

You can't win a prize, and then sell it to someone else and keep the money apparently. But who knows, maybe lots of people do that, I just don't know about it.
