Hi Singles!

I hear this so many times from Christians: "I want someone totally sold out for God!!!" which, of course, is WONDERFUL. I'm not saying it should be any other way.

BUT, I DO wonder if that person who was "totally sold out for God" showed up on our doorstep, would we recognize who the person was? After all, the Pharisee accused Jesus of blasphemy and told Him that He received all His power from the devil.

I'm not saying it would have to be anything that drastic, of course, but I'm curious... in your opinion, what does the life of someone totally "sold out" for God look like?

As an example, I recently heard a message by Kevin Leal (Key Ministries) in which he was explaining that someone anointed for business or nursing or even janitorial work is no less Godly than someone anointed for the ministry--as Christians, we just seem to think that someone called to spend all their time in a church is somehow more Godly than someone God might have called to be in other fields. God has individual plans for all of us and not everyone can be a pastor or teacher.

My Dad is a prime example of this--he dreamed of being a pastor, but took on a job in business because he had a young family to support. Some would say he betrayed his calling and should have gone into the ministry, "relying on God to provide." That may well be, but it was all for a reason. Last year, my Dad's dream of becoming a pastor finally came true, and my parent's ministry (all done for free and in their own spare time) is based on helping people get out of debt--all his time in business was for a reason, and, I believe, truly led by God. One of my Dad's first jobs in the business world was to turn around a company that was in a financial pit--now he does the same thing in his ministry, except with individual people.

I myself often think that I would not be seen as a "suitable catch" to a guy who believes he is totally sold out for God. I pray daily, study God's Word, and enjoy my church but am not someone who could go to 3 services a week and spend all my time there--I've done so in the past, and while I'll go through times of intense study, I know that I feel much more comfortable in things such as small, home-based groups. At this point, I have no interest in teaching or leading a group. I enjoy being a good student and helping the host, such as by volunteering to do the dishes before I leave. I just feel it's something I'm called to do (to be a support person to the leader.)

Sometimes I kind of doubt I'll impress a "good Christian guy" because I won't be the one in the forefront--I'll be in the back scrubbing something down, going to a prison to talk to an inmate, or asking a war veteran how his/her experiences have personally affected their faith. I have absolutely NO interest in the spotlight, which would probably be a huge turn-off to someone who has that "bold" faith so many Christians seem to talk about.

How about the rest of you? What makes you "totally sold out for God"? And, if someone asked you how can you recognize someone else who is sold out for God, what would be your answer?

Does the person for you have to be "totally sold out for God" in exactly the same way?

I think people totally sold out for God will never actually admit that they are totally sold out for God. All of the prophets and apostles were humble and saw themselves as wretched. These are the words of the apostle Paul from the book of Romans:

"Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?" (Romans 7:24) NLT

Stephen, the first Christian martyr, wasn't a preacher or teacher...he set up tables and cared for the poor. (Acts 6) 8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people...WHILE WAITING TABLES! He was doing what God called him to do, and it showed.

If God called you to be a plumber, then to try and be a preacher will be going against the will of God.

Jesus was poor, blue-collar, used rough language, was not pretty or handsome, did not come from wealth or power, was not educated, drank wine, and hung out with the rejects and losers...and God bless Him for that!

I've spent my entire life 'backstage', both figuratively and literally. It's where God wants me right now...if He wants me to be on stage, so be it, but I'm good at behind-the-scenes stuff. It's what God has gifted me in.

Seoul, as far as you being a 'suitable catch', I'm sure all women know of Proverbs 31, which goes on and on about how women are supposed to be on stage, in the spotlight, preaching and teaching...oh, wait, what?

Again, if you're called to scrub something or talk to the 'rejects and losers', than to be anything different is to go against God.

I have only looked at the poll, will look at it more at another time, so sorry if I have missed stuff that you've said, which I probably have, but.

Someone who loves their god will their heart, mind and soul.

Someone who Trusts in Jesus - Truly.

Nothing more, nothing less - all the above are only outward appearances and while it is likely that they will do more of these things, you don't need to do any of them, or need to not do any of them to be a christian who is sold out to god.

I dont want someone totally sold out for god. They tend to neglect everything.

I hate to say it but Nod brings up a very good point and one that I think a lot of Ladies who have that Mantra, "I want a man to looks so hard for God that he finds me.'' ...or something to that end. (I've seen the bumper sticker and the T-shirt to that effect.) Well, they will be out in the cold.

If he is as Sold out as possible, which kind of excludes Music ministry Leaders (accessibility & other reasons), then he probably isn't going to have much in common with the average P's & Q's ''Good Christian Girl.''

If he is truly sold out he's probably going to want someone willing to go to hell and back. A person Willing to put life and societies little mile stones on hold to accomplish whatever he endeavors to accomplish. Which also means getting his attention is going to be hard, to say the least.

So this guy with the weird beard, old shoes, $400 dollar car, the bi-annual hut in Sudan that sells bibles, digs ditches, practices amateur medicine, teaches english and dodges the RUF is probably not the best choice for Sandy Sunday School teacher/ Bake Sale coordinator. Regardless of how Good she is.

So if we are honest with ourselves,( and because this is the single's forum pretty much no), we to have to admit that looking for a mate and looking for to become sold out aren't as compatible as the fairy tales would suggest. But if you really want your cake and the ability to eat it too, just remember to count the cost of what it is that you are asking for.

What if you're the weird beard, old shoe, $400 car guy, but you've never been to the Sudan and the RUF hasn't even heard of you? Is Sally Sunday good for me, I mean him?

:) thats a great point.

As the weird beard, old shoe, $400 dollar car guy, who has never been to Sudan.... Dating Sandy might throw off the big plans.

She probably wouldn't be into us anyways. ;)

Yeah, she's looking for Mr clean-shaven, six-figure-income, hair-product, gonna-get-me-a-four-caret-rock guy.

Sally might be able to buy her own rocks. She might just be waiting for the guy who shares her love for the Lord and her desire to be with the one who loves her the way she's willing to love him...flaws and all, car/no car, beard/no beard...

When I think of the phrase "sold out for God" I think of regular folks like us, not just pastors or missionaries. I think of people who love the Lord, who have struggles and reach out to God with prayer, maybe fasting and advice from other Christians. Just because you are not in a lofty position in ministry does not mean you are not sold out. Sold out is not wanting to turn back to other things that you may have done in the past and having a heart for Him and on a daily seeking after Him and His Righteousness.

and maybe Sally sees the sort of guys described above just about every day and she knows that most guys like that who can afford nearly anything don't appreciate the value of things that aren't for sale, and can't imagine many of them being sold out to Jesus...they already have a god they don't want to part with. That whole "eye of a needle" thing...

I totally agree with you thimsrebman. It's loving Him heart, mind and soul, and serving wherever He's put us. There are lost people everywhere, not just in third world countries, as well as those in need.
