Hi @Defenderofgrace, I love this section of 1 Corinthians (y)(y) Not only does it tell us why it's so important to be loving as a Christian (v1-3), it also tells us (in a practical sense) what Godly love is supposed to look like, what it is and what it isn't too (as you just noted for us above :)).

I also like the fact that it's laid out
(to a degree anyway) like an ingredient label on the side of a package of food, with the most important ingredients, and the stuff that it contains the most of (in this case, patience and kindness) written right at the top list.

Here are all 13 verses of 1 Corinthians 13. I thought they might be useful to have quick access to here.

1 Corinthians 13
1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

What's the difference in the two (rejoicing with the truth ~vs~ rejoicing in truth) :unsure:

Study the word translated "in" and not it is not WITH..........
I just grabbed Stong's and here's what it had to say. I'm not sure why the KJV decided to translate the συγχαίρω as "rejoice in" just the one time in 1 Cor 13:6, and "rejoice with" the other six times that συγχαίρω occurs, but that's what they did. Anyway, here's Strong's:

4796 συγχαίρω [sugchairo /soong·khah·ee·ro/] v. From 4862 and 5463; TDNT 9:359; TDNTA 1298; GK 5176; Seven occurrences; AV translates as “rejoice with” six times, and “rejoice in” once.

1 to rejoice with, take part in another’s joy. 2 to rejoice together, to congratulate. ~Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon

I don't have a problem with either one personally (because I don't perceive any real/meaningful difference between the two English words .. in this case), and when you consider what the lexicon just told us, as well the fact that the body of our translations and paraphrases are basically split down the middle on this one, I guess I'll need to ask you again, what is the difference between the two in your opinion that makes "rejoices in the truth" an acceptable translation, and "rejoices with the truth" an unacceptable one :unsure:

It is sometimes difficult when people who know exactly what is being said will nit-pick over a word.... you are a patient brother. These same will nit-pick another if they understand differently than they and both are correct..........it is their way or the freeway.ñ

in the Art-DFS <--the definite article tied with with the word truth is why the word is translated rejoices in i 1st Corinthains....

Love rejoicing IN THE TRUTH IS NOT THE SAME AS LOVE REJOICING WITH THE TRUTH.....

It sets the truth ABOVE love as opposed to love being equal with truth.......

Think about this truth and why God inspired it the way he did.....GOD has even MAGNIFIED the truth above his VERY NAME because at the end of the day when the dust settles the Number one characteristic of God is his personification of truth............

That is why it makes a difference to me.....

Every word is inspired for a reason...anyway....

Take it up with God..he inspired EVERY word for a reason...maybe you can be flippantly loose with the word of God, I however will not be....and one of the reasons for all of the heretical mistruths being peddled today is because of the very attitude you portray in this post of yours...handling the word of God deceitfully and NOT CUTTING IT STRAIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

For instance the law that we should not plant two kinds of seed in the same field probably is just all wrong to you, right? Read the parable of the Sower, that is Jesus, His seed is the Word, and the field is mankind.

So show me which laws Jesus teaches us not to obey, and I will show you a lie. However He has made obsolete the lion's portion of them...….yet, YOu handle the word like an expert, yes, just lke Jesus, righ? That is a question

I have prayed n that subject for myself as per dying for your enemy……..it is an incredible goal. Our Lord has done this, even forgiving from His agony on the cross,, now for His Body Members, amen.

Paul on disputing words.

1Ti 6:3 If any man teacheth a different doctrine, and consenteth not to sound words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
1Ti 6:4 he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but doting about questionings and disputes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

It is one thing to share the understanding of the Word and another to tell others who understand from a different vantage given by the Lord, Himself, that only you are correct. Let us all put on th e uniform of our Maker and not vain rags.

So do I, I love to achieve that standart, but unfortunately I am far from It.

I am glad Jesus promise that If we abide in Him, soner or later we Will be there.
