Women deserve respect

Women and men are equal before God (Galatians 3:28) In a relationship a man should never lay a hand on a woman out of anger or in any other way that harms her he should treat her with respect and as a lady...... A man should always open doors, pull out chairs and carry things for a woman not because she's helpless or unable, but to show her she is valuable and worthy of respect.

I agree a man should never lay a hand against a woman (or vice versa) and respect women. But your definition of respect and how to show them they are valuable is rather limited and not always effective.
Some women take offense when a man tries to do things for them. I've never been one to pull out chairs.
You're taking what is technically worldly values and applying them to your statement as fact. Those notions are not fact, they're options.
In reality showing a woman respect is less about that you must do these predetermined worldly ideals and more about learning about the woman and what being respected means to her. That is a much greater respect.
If a woman doesn't see her chair being pulled out as a sign of respect, but has other ideas of what respect is, and you pull out her chair you aren't respecting her at all.
Don't let dated cliches guide you into bad choices.

I don't know why this topic has me feeling like a "mama hen", so please bear with me.
You both have very valid opinions stated above.
Please allow me to point out an observation (just an observation.... MY opinion... from a married lady whose point of view over time has reflected BOTH of yours ...)
To me , it sounds like what Dave is trying to relay is that if he were looking for someone, these may be things he would want to do for her AND feel respected and appreciated back by her allowing him to do so........

I dont know about the pulling out chairs but the opening doors is good if its not automatic sliding door.
Carrying things can be good too. Although, I dated a man that offered to carry my handbag, and then he stole my eftpos card.

So I am wary of men who want to carry my own bags. Im like no thanks im good and its not heavy. how about you carry some heavy rocks or lift that sack of compost? But dont strain your back trying to show off to me.

Use a wheelbarrow.

The other thing is, IM more impressed if he brings me flowers then all this carry on....

I really don't like the word "deserve"; it's much overused, and IMO the only thing we humans "deserve" is judgment under a wrathful God. Fortunately, other contributors have expressed themselves with greater temperance than I would have.

There are many societal evils that are rooted at least in part in the belief that women "deserve" something from men (and owe nothing in return). Both chivalry and feminist idealogy want special treatment for women simply on the basis of gender. Neither is Christian at its core.

Instead of claiming that anyone "deserves" anything, our treatment of others should be based on our biblically-based belief that each human is made in the image of God, and the Holy Spirit in us should be manifested in kindness toward all fellow humans, male and female, without regard to gender.

Actually, I think there is something wrong with sticking up for women, if you don't also stick up for men. It's special treatment based solely on gender.

Yes, there are women who are not treated right... and people rail about the need for protection and justice for them. However, most people are silent about the need for protection and justice for men who are not treated right.

It's a double standard that has no basis in Scripture, and by blindly perpetuating it, we perpetuate the evil of it.

Ever wonder why western churches are full of women and empty of men? It isn't because men don't need saving. Ever wonder why there are shelters for battered women, and none for battered men? It isn't because men don't get battered.

Hmm this got me thinking...

Kindness is a fruit of the spirit and should be shown to all regardless if they deserve it or not. Even better if they don’t cause it might be just what they need to change whatever they are going through.

I still hold my stance to respect should be earned from all even women. It’s something that I admire about that person and to get to that level we need to get to know them first.

Was not talking about sexual sin. I do think women are generally nicer to be with than men. The way I see it is we all are children of God. I don’t put anyone on a pedestal, only Jesus.
