Saying "Oh my God" casually?

well it seems some people on this thread cant and make a big deal over it. Please, there are more important things them to be language police.

I really do think that it is using the Lord's name in a rather vain and reckless way, but even if it were not, why is it so hard for people to just show a little verbal etiquette? If for no other reason, do it for the sake of the brethren....

It is taught when a person is not aware of a transgression that person is not guilty of it.

I do not like people using any of the names of our Savior without legitamate cause and absolute reverence, however I cannot fault non believers nor ignorant believers for this.

The Lords name isnt GOD I mean that describes who He is but thats not actually his name.
You might want to search the Bible and find all the names of God.

They will be in Hebrew and they all have meanings. As Christians, we know the Lord as Jesus. So I think you are a bit off base there and interpreting scripture a bit too literally.

Who are Gods people called by His name? Well we dont call His people God do we. In the Bible, it's Israel. if you look up the meaning it means 'God contends. ' because Jacobs name got changed to this after he wrestled with the angel.
'el' is the Hebrew for God. It doesnt mean nobody should ever SAY His name. But nobody should take his name in vain.

Most of the angels have names ending in 'el' they are messengers for God.

I know it’s not what people intend, but I do believe it is taking the Lord’s name in vain. People don’t do that with other people’s names (usually). You don’t hear, “Oh my Tommy!” and then apologize to Tommy when he comes over after hearing his name. If God put it in the Bible, it’s definitely important to Him that we not take His name in vain and I think that includes using it as an expression of surprise. Look to God and the Bible, not man who is fallible, sinful, and imperfect. Peter made mistakes and no pastor is perfect either. They too are not above gentle correction.

The Bible says “all scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). “If anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness” (Galatians 6:1). If they don’t listen to you, go in a pair or a group, and then if they still don’t then go to the church (Matthew 18:16-17). Many probably don’t even realize what they are doing, so we should say something and if they continue then that’s not on us but on them. As for non-believers, don’t judge those outside, God will do that (1 Corinthians 5:12-13). God will judge all as He sees fit, by His standards and not our opinions. And Jesus said, “I tell you that men will have to give an account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37).

According to our Father, come the Kingtdom we will all be given one, pure tongue to speak so we will all call Him by one name….Zephaniah...

Even with this true name to come, I would imagine, but I do not yet know, that it will also be more of a title rather than what English speakers consider a name. Most westerners for that matter.

I like to include the transliteration from the Hebrew also. There are many who know what it translates as. I liek the translation, 2The Redeemer of Yah(weh.)

The vast majority of folks are not aware the Jesus is from the latin then from Greek and finally from Yeshua, all transliterations.. And even less know what it means, but the tranlation givess full understanding to "He shall be calle Yeshua for He shall save His people.

I am with you on this Lanolin. When I see people use the spelling "G-d" I think they are overdoing it. The problem arises when someone become offended easily. We even have scripture say essentially says "lighten up."

Ecc. 7:16 "Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?"

Dennis Prager, Jeff Foxworthy and Ravi Zacharias met in Atlanta and spoke to an audience, there is a you tube video of it which is very worth viewing, in it, Dennis Prager speaks of that commandment and how in Hebrew the word for "take" is the same as "carry", so the commandment is actually , "who carries the Lords name in vain", meaning those who claim to be His yet do terrible things in His name, men of G-d molesting children, muslims murdering, etc.
In the last 2,000 years we have pretty messed up His church and turned it into a bunch
of "do this" and "don't do that's" , perverting the gospel of relationship with the person of Christ, in this thread there is an abundance of "I think this" and I think that", when it doesn't really matter what we think, we are His and are to be hidden in Him, we are no longer our own, His desires become our desires.

Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

The 4th Command, I think.

I would not judge others, for they might not know any better. The way someone says something is often much more telling than the words themselves.

Nearly everyone who you will hear saying OMG do not have God in their thoughts when they say it.. And that's wrong..
