A comparison, yes, not identical.

41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
Jesus did the comparison ;)
Thats from 3 days and 3 nights of Jonah in the belly of fish....

Jonah
2:1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,
2:2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, [and] thou heardest my voice.

Not enough evidence to burn anyone at the stake today.

Good point.

Jonah 1:17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
The word used in verse 40 of Matthew 12 is,kētos.
κῆτος (kētos)
Strong: G2785
GK: G3063
a large fish, sea monster, whale, Mt. 12:40

Jonah was not alive in the "belly of the great fish". As he himself said in the Book of Jonah chapter 2:2
Jonah's Prayer
2 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, 2 saying,
“I called out to the Lord, out of my distress,
and he answered me;
out of the belly of Sheol I cried,

Sheol is not the Hell we as Christians have come to understand as a place of torment. It was not that when that book of Jonah was penned. It was precisely what the Hebrews knew Sheol to be. The abode of the dead. Not a place of fire, brimstone, suffering.

If one thinks Jonah was alive in Sheol, given the verse in the Book of Matthew chapter 12 that refers to the sign of Jonah, then they have to concede that Jesus was alive in the tomb for the same duration as Jonah spent in the belly. Three days and three nights.

Much is made of the need for this particular scripture to state precisely in those words, Jonah was dead. The contrast they believe is that when it does not state those words, the scripture therefore is not saying Jonah was dead in the belly of the great fish. However, if we hearken unto the sign referred to in Matthew 12 and the phrase, just as Jonah was.... , so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Sheol)
Jonah was as Jesus will be. And we know Jesus was crucified, died on the cross, and was in the tomb for three days and three nights. And while there did minister and bring the Gospel to those in Sheol.

The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

Jonah 1:17 . . Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah.

The Hebrew word for "prepared" is manah (maw-naw') which has nothing to
do with either design or construction. It means to have something,
someone, and/or an assemblage picked out and all set to go, i.e. on station
ready for action. Here it is in a variety of translations.

"But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah" (NIV)

"And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah" (NAS)

"Now the LORD had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah." (NLT)

"But the LORD sent a great fish to swallow Jonah" (2011 Catholic)

"And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah" (RSV)

Whether the big fish was a freak of nature I don't know, maybe it was; but
to my knowledge, manah has no reference to altering something's physical
characteristics.

Amazing to me how many that name JESUS regularly embellish the text, add verbiage and words and or speculate and then run with it like it is the gospel truth......no wonder most people that name JESUS are spiritually inept when it comes to what the bible actually states.......just like the days of Jesus....the surmising's of men peddled as the word of GOD....rather sickening....
Amazing. That observation is precisely a description of what you have done ignoring the sign of Jonah in Matthew 12.

Do you believe the account of Lazarus and the rich man? If so, you’d know that the heart of the is hell, what you’re calling Sheol (some kind of RCC purgatory) and it has fire and torment.

Wow! Everyone else is always wrong. Have you ever been wrong and admitted it? You won’t on this matter since you’ve taught this several times and that would be awkward. The number of times you’ve taught it does not matter. I’ve literally, lol, taught this little book dozens of times. It takes at least 12-15 sessions to teach it properly, comparing Scripture to Scripture.
and wrong every time if you taught he died.....!!

Jesus in the Book of Luke chapter 16 described Sheol in great detail when sharing the parable of Lazarus and the rich man.
When Jesus was dead in the tomb, His soul went to Sheol where He ministered to the spirits in prison, which Sheol is also called.
Jesus resurrected from the Tomb/Death , after three days and nights in the tomb. Jonah resurrected from death , left Sheol, and was seen ministering to those in Nineveh after three days and nights in Sheol.

The sign of Jonah:
30. " For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. " The Book of Luke chapter 11

I am posting this topic because of the chatroom question raised over Jonah in the belly of the fish, and all of the surrounding debate around this. I believe the bible can be taken literally in terms of what transpired. Lets analyse these verses:

Jonah 1
17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Jonah 2

2 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly. 2 And he said:
“I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction,
And He answered me.
Out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
And You heard my voice.
3 For You cast me into the deep,
Into the heart of the seas,
And the floods surrounded me;
All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.
4 Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight;
Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’
5 The waters surrounded me, even to my soul;
The deep closed around me;
Weeds were wrapped around my head.
6 I went down to the moorings of the mountains;
The earth with its bars closed behind me forever;
Yet You have brought up my life from the pit,
O Lord, my God.
7 “When my soul fainted within me,
I remembered the Lord;
And my prayer went up to You,
Into Your holy temple.

8 “Those who regard worthless idols
Forsake their own [b]Mercy.
9 But I will sacrifice to You
With the voice of thanksgiving;
I will pay what I have vowed.
Salvation is of the Lord.”
10 So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

>We can take this account from Jonah LITERALLY. He was swallowed by a fish. He (his BODY) was in the fish 3 days. There is no suitable living environment within a fish (air pocket, condominium, economy class seating). Jonah died. He wasn't being preserved alive within the fish.
>Jonah gives the account - out of Sheol (Hell) he cried out. This is not to create a precedent that others can cry out from hell and be delivered in the same way. No. It just means that God is sovereign and can do as He pleases. He can bring low and He can lift up.
>Jonah's body was in the fish but his soul was in Sheol.
>Hell looks to be a place under the earth for this is where Jonah describes it.
>We also see with the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man saying engaging with Father Abraham. Conversation/communication is possible within this spiritual nether realm.
>So it is not impossible for Jonah to call out to God from Sheol, and his prayer went up to the Holy Temple.

Now we have an interesting account coming from the Words of our Lord:

Matthew 12
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You."
39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
>Jonah Died and Jesus Died.
>Jonah was alive after 3 days, Jesus was alive after 3 days.
My take
Jonah described drowning in v5 to me but you have a few seconds left after you drown before you lose conscious .. Maybe that's when the fish took him as Jonah give up the ghost having made his last appeal to God from the fish.. Perhaps God directed the fish after 3 days to a point where a couple Ninevites were close by and saw the fish vomit up a dead man where God resurrected Jonah right before their eyes .. That would put the fear of God in many if word got out among Nineveh's citizens and at least give credibility to Jonah's witness to non-believers ..

I don't think the witch of Endor called up Samuel but conjured up a demon familiar spirit she claimed was Samuel ... Lazarus on the other hand was resurrected by Jesus ..

Jesus give up the Ghost and His dead body resurrected early the third day .. I personally think Jesus Spirit went straight to Paradise and began to work in victory over death and hell while the disciples were afraid and wondering what they would do .. Jesus then resurrected and even proved to Thomas He is alive and well and to prove to all life after death
