Acts 11:18 reads, “When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.”

Repentance is a gift from God, a grace not of human works.

To repent is to ease or comfort strengthening in weakness.

It is the Comforter who first turns us towards his face "the hearing of the gospel" that can cause us to repent confirming we are in his family and then can pray for strength to put away the childish things of mankind.

He that works in those who believe is the author one who brings his words as thoughts and the finisher the one that gives ears to understand.

Two turnings. He turns us so that having been turn we return to Him the comforter. Who as a double blessing does bring to our minds the things he has taught us.

Jeremiah 31:18-20 King James Version (KJV) I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the Lord my God. Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

I would say It means to decide In your mind that GOD was In CHRIST and HE IS ALMIGHTY and HE made me/us and knows all about the human being and I’m going to choose to follow HIM and then GOD will do a work In the person.

One thing about true repentance Is that a person Can’t come to GOD and the truth In/about them not be known.

John 6:42-45
King James Version

42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.

44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

Ephesians 2:8-11
King James Version

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

11 Wherefore remember, that ye [being] in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

The only sin that that's needs repentance/change of thought/direction that can't be forgiven is UNBELIEF & continued REJECTION of/in Christ's sin payment & resurrection,

Jn 16:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
(NOTE: Context is sin, NOT SINS! The only SIN that condemns one to eternal separation/damnation is UNBELIEF, continued REJECTION of Christ's sin payment & resurrection, until/at life's end. Jesus sin payment covers/includes all sin except rejection of His finished sin redemptive work & resurrection at life's end/your death)

Jn 12:32 Jesus said; And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
(NOTE: Jesus was lifted up on the cross & from the grave!. Everybody is drawn to/offered salvation via God's Holy Spirit. Sadly, not everyone excepts/embraces it)

Rom 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches """of his goodness""" and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that """the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance"""?
(NOTE: It's thru the GOODNESS of GOD not thru OUR OWN great work of sin repentance, obedience or self-control. That we REPENT/change our thinking/course. It's salvations seal of indwelling Holy Spirit that leads us to REPENT/change our thinking outlook & direction > TOWARDS God & faith in Christ. Also see Acts 20:21).

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them which heard the word.
(NOTE: They BELIEVED (vs43) & as Peter spoke (vs44) The Holy Spirit fell on them (vs45). NO REPENTANCE of anykind here, No water baptism, No circumcision, they brought no sin sacrifice to the Temple, No law keeping etc. Thru FAITH & faith alone, they received the eternal salvation sealing (2 Cor 1:22, 2 Tim 1:14, 2 Cor 5:5) baptism with Christ's indwelling Holy Spirit)

Rom 16:26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, ""so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience"" ""that comes from faith""
(NOTE: Brought to obedience/repentance/godly living, thru Faith)

Rom 1:5 "Through him we received grace" & apostleship "to call all the Gentiles to the obedience" "that comes from faith" for his name’s sake.
(NOTE: Called to FAITH, which leads to obedience & repentance)

1 Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
(NOTE: Anyone that believes they can conquer their own sin nature, without Gods help is mistaken)

It starts with this scripture:

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, you will not despise (Psalm 51:17).

And this also:

I will be sorry for my sin (Psalm 38:18).

Then Jesus gave the example of the Ninevites who repented at the preaching of Jonah (Matthew 12:41).

Here's what the Ninevites did:

So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth...For word came unto the king...and he arose from his throne, and laid his robe from him, and covered him in sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh...saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands (Jonah 3:5-8).

Job likewise did the following:

I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes (Job 42:6).

To repent is to be sorry, remorseful.

For the scripture says:

If your brother trespass against you, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him (Luke 17:3-4). In other words, If he apologizes (says he sorry), then forgive him.

No need to consult the greek here (you never need to IMO). It's plainly obvious, based on scripture, what repent means.

Malcolm Smith did a series on the beatitudes a little while back. He did 2 hours (2 parts) on the verse you quoted above. They may help.

Jer. 14:10
Thus says the Lord to this people:
“Thus they have loved to wander;
They have not restrained their feet.
Therefore the Lord does not accept them;
He will remember their iniquity now,
And punish their sins.”
11 Then the Lord said to me, “Do not pray for this people, for their good. 12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them. But I will consume them by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence.”
13 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, the prophets say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.’ ”
14 And the Lord said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in My name. I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, divination, a worthless thing, and the deceit of their heart.

What if your brother refuses to say sorry?

(excerpt)

Two requisites of repentance included in sub are "to turn from evil, and to turn to the good." Most critical theologically is the idea of returning to God, or turning away from evil. If one turns away from God, apostasy is indicated. Three times Ezekiel included God's call to the people of Israel: "Repent! Turn from your idols and renounce all your detestable practices!" ( 14:6 ); "Repent! Turn away from all your offenses" ( 18:30 ); "Turn! Turn from your evil ways" ( 33:11 ). Such a call was characteristic of the prophets (see, e.g., Isa 45:22 ; 55:7 ; Joel 2:12-13 ). The Septuagint underlines this idea by usually translating sub by epi (apo-)strepho [ajpostrevfw] (to turn about, or to turn away from). To be abandoned are both evil intentions and evil deeds, and both motive and conduct are to be radically changed. A striking example is found in Isaiah 1:16-17: "Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow."

Which Scripture verse tells you that, or which dictionary?
I would offer..

Like all things God must do the first work . Think of the work that he works in us as "two fold." First He repents or comforts himself with the peace of God and then He in mercy gracefully calls us from within in order to turn us toward Him (not seen) that we might hear his understanding. Then after being turned by his hand we can comfort our selves and hope his faith that works in us with us will increase to make our burden lighter. . Growing pains .(because I did bear the reproach of my youth.)

Two turnings one work of the Faithful and True one. The gospel

Brown-Driver-Briggs' Definition

1) to be sorry, console oneself, repent, regret, comfort, be comforted

1a) (Niphal)

1a1) to be sorry, be moved to pity, have compassion

1a2) to be sorry, rue, suffer grief, repent

1a3) to comfort oneself, be comforted

1a4) to comfort oneself, ease oneself

1b) (Piel) to comfort, console

1c) (Pual) to be comforted, be consoled

Jeremiah 31:19 King James Version I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the Lord my God.Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

You provided a BDB definition, but not for the word, "repent". A definition of a word must not use that word to define itself. Try again.

Repentance is produced by the Holy Spirit entering the heart of man. New man, new things. and walking not in the old.

Repentance produced by self cannot endure. Repentance produced by Christ endures for eternity. Repentance is about giving up on self worth and receiving Gods grace as a gift. Pharisees would not give up their self righteousness and were not interested in salvation by grace.

For the cause of Christ
