Do you guys think it's okay for a single person to adopt? I'm interested in adopting someday, and a lot of people have told me that I shouldn't if I'm not married, because a child should have a mother and a father. But isn't it better for a child to have one parent than no parents?

Being adopted myself, my personal thought is that if God is leading you to adopt on your own and you'll have a strong support network of other family and friends behind you, by all means, please consider it.

I've known two other adult adoptees (both girls... if that makes a difference, I'm not sure) who were raised by single mothers and no father present, and they stated that they never felt a loss or as if something were missing--they were happy having just a Mom. One was an only child and the other was raised along with four sisters, whom her mother adopted as well.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that the love of one parent is better than none at all. Although I have two wonderful, loving, Christian parents, I've been back to my orphanage and while I know the staff there is extremely dedicated, a care institution just can't compete with having a family--and God puts together families in very special ways, sometimes with just one parent. I had thought of adopting as a single as well at one time... I don't believe it's where God is leading me but I've had the privilege of working on a team to help another couple adopt.

I wish you all the best in your endeavor.

Not having been adopted myself, I don't know if I should speak up...but, I will anyways. (grin)

I agree with Seoul.

That is all I have to say about that.

i've been thinking the same thing. lol. i'm still really young and i plan on marrying one day but if that day is later then sooner then i think i'd like to adopt. or be a foster parent. i'm not really sure which yet, but just like they said above. having a parent even if its only one is better then no parent.

every story i've ever heard about foster parents aren't very good at all. so i want to be a foster parent that cares for kids. or adopt a kid whose parents couldn't take care of them ya know. and i know there are SO many ppl who say don't get abortion and put the child up for adoption but if there is no one to adopt them then they're left living without a family. even if its just one parent its one person who they know loves them and doesn't think of them as just a number. they're special in that persons heart. ^_^

neat thought. I amdefinatly thinking the same thing but i dont think i am able to support a child right now.

I'm going to adopt whether I'm single or not. I will need to be able to support the child first. The bonus for me is that I am studying to be an elementary teacher, so the ones I adopt won't be too far from me during the day. As of now, I'm not interested in adopting babies because they are easily adopted. Older children have a harder time finding homes. Plus, I'm not a fan of day-cares.

So, obviously I'm not opposed. :D

I think single parent adoption is unhealthy for both the parent and child. Its on thing not being able to control circumstances that make someone a single parent but to choose that life is wrong.

if your heart is RIGHT and you know this is your calling (adotion is hard as heck)...then go for it:):) as long as the kid is loved and supported, and a good STRONG family backround helps immensly.

Go for it! If your heart is telling you that you should adopt a child, do it. Taking a child out of a state home is by far healthier than leaving them there to be raised by the government. If Jesus's love in your heart is supposed to be spread to a child, regardless of where he/she came from and regardless of if you're in a relationship, do it.

I agree that one parent is better than no parents at all. I think it would be much better for a child to grow up in a loving home with one parent than to be in an orphanage or a foster home most of their life. Also, you could still potentially get married later. It's not like after yopuadopt this kid there is gonna be no chance of getting a husband.

We are the same age and I have thought about adoption too. I guestimated that at the age of 32 if I was still single I would be a ble to financially support a child by myself. So my 32nd birthday is my special adoption date. On that day if I am unmarried I will begin the adoption process.

Yeah, I was originally thinking 30, but I've run into some job/financial issues this past year so now I'm hoping for 32 or 33. Plus I've heard that it takes about 5 years for a single person to get a child, so the sooner the better.

Kinda weird for a guy but ive always planned to do the samething when im 30..long story but i look after a little girl who is one half time and i love it she feels like shes mine
