We were in an evangelical church for 17 years. One person spoke in tongues (y,know yabba dabba do stuff🤪) then, when they finished, it was quiet, then they interpreted their own message!!
Nobody in eldership said anything... We both got a message to leave not long after that 😔
the one that "interprets" is the only one that supposedly understands the language?

Don’t be a meanyhead

wrong! you are just a hateful person. You have not Biblical refute so you attack what you do not know or understand. Acts 1:8 is to all who know Jesus as Lord. 1cor chapter 12 -14 all contextually about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Which are for today ALL of them.

You have been shown this in the word of God but pride has blinded you You are not an authority on the topic, yet you think you are.
Well you are certainly responding is a kind and loving manner. Acts 1:8 is too vague to support your claims about gifts. 1 Cor 12-14 is too complex for you to exegete in any meaningful way to support your overly broad claims about gifts. You cannot and will not ever demonstrate that what you claim to be doing whatever that is can be found in the word of God. You make the poorly fashioned claim that 1 Cor 12-14 is a unit and you endeavor to read them in exclusion to the rest of the bible.

When you stop ignoring me you only demonstrate that you have a problem controlling your temper. If anyone has a pride problem it would appear to be you. Hatred has blinded you and it is obvious in the way you respond to me.

I have presented my position from scripture which is the only authority on the matter. I can give it to you again so you can deny it again if you so desire.

I am a bit skeptical of tongues. I also associate babble tongues with a bit of superstition (like Voodoo, sorry). However, if someone can truly speak a foreign language or if other people can interpret what the tongues speaker is saying, that sounds valid. A person speaking in tongues to God alone in a room, I don't see the purpose. However, if someone else gains by the person speaking in tongues, either experiencing God or understanding prophesy, I think that gift comes from the Holy Spirit. We can speak to God in our own language, or have a long silent prayer, and I think it will be just as meaningful. That said, I do know people who speak in tongues, and they probably think they are closer to God because of it. But, the Bible doesn't say people who speak in tongues are closer to God.
Read the book of Acts and as you do Ask God to reveal His Truth to your Heart...Ask and you shall receive! 🙂

Yes it is loving to tell the truth.

You have been attacking those who hold the gifts of the Holy Spirit for years now name calling and mocking and scoffing as you have done yet again on this thread. In fact many have exposed it many times. 1Cor chapter 12 through 14 is not a vague claim about the gifts of the Holy Spirit they are unit chapters that are in-depth on the use of them in the church setting. WE all have said many time the foolishness and abuse of them is well noted, as is the abuse of the pulpit. The word of God fully explains the gifts of the Holy Spirit and why they are for today. I am not mad you assume I am :) . Remember it was you who said, you were never corrected in the word of God. The only thing that matters, is not your position but what is truth.

You are the one who looks at 1cor 13: 8-10 and say the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are done away with. YET you can't show NO where in the Bible where it states that assumption " The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not for today."

NO where is that said.

Jesus didn't not say it, Peter did not say it, and Paul did not say it. You think that the creating of the KJV Bible is that which is perfect that has come so the Gifts are not needed. Yet you can't prove that you use some kind of allegorizing of the Old Testament, then when you are called on it Everyone is not spiritual enough to grasp it. LOL hahahaha . Wrong ! You have no Biblical support for that assumption. And that angers you because you think of yourself as a teacher of the word of God, and you are not.
You are prideful and insulting you search for new believers and attack them when they say anything or ask anything about this topic. I have just yet again called you on it. And I have much proof of you doing so. So please stop lying and I will place you m on ignore again.

God bless :)

The tongue speakers in the bible knew what they were saying. Paul said they were edified in doing it. And he said understanding is the basis for edification.

Of course they did!! 🙂
Maybe they were given a language ‘practice run’ before the day of Pentecost “to increase their faith”, (particularly as thats the very thing they asked for) 🤔

I have been refuting false and harmful doctrine not only on the matter of tongues but also on other matters. Dishonest doctrine is to be challenged and refuted when it is encountered.

That assumption as you call it is evidenced in church history. The reemergence of Pentecostalism in the early 1900's after a long period of silence speaks volumes.
Jesus didn't not say it, Peter did not say it, and Paul did not say it. You think that the creating of the KJV Bible is that which is perfect that has come so the Gifts are not needed. Now you add a sneaky little nontruth into your accusation. I never claimed that the KJV was the perfect. What I have stated is the bible is the perfect because it is the only thing not fully given at the time Paul penned 1 Cor 13:10. It is by this divine revelation the bible that man sees himself as God sees man. OT prophecies made clear and no longer hidden in the NT.

I only refute doctrine that is harmful. You continue to make claims against me based on your personal bias. You do not like me and really I can live with that knowledge. You cannot argue away the evidence in the bible that tongues from the Jewish perspective were associated with judgment. Nimrod and Israel going into captivity are examples of how Jewish thought would have reacted to tongues.

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray Jesus did not teach them to pray in tongues. Until you hijacked this thread to war with me it was about tongues in the apostolic church.

As long as you unfairly judge me you will continue to exhibit behavior that is not to the glory of God. I cannot apologize for defending sound doctrine. If you had a convincing argument from scripture you would have made it long ago.

May God do a work in your heart fit for repentance.

When men destroy the foundation of the doctrines like the tongues doctrine found in Isaiah 28 .

How could we who are trusting the foundation get those to understand the tongue of God's prophecy ?

Do we remove Isaiah 28 from the book of prophecy by making a senseless noise and fall backward to show ourselves approved unto God as one who rightly divides?

Try asking someone who actually believes and practices what you describe. Good luck finding one.

Luck? Why not faith. The kind that comes from hearing God. . not each other. ? (flesh and blood)

I am still looking for one that can show the idea of self-edification (look I did it) the same kind that desired to make Jesus into a circus seal; "do a trick work a miracle" . . . when we see your work of self-edifying , then we will trust you. Welcome to the club of sign and wonder seekers

Spiritual gift .Can't see a Spirit working . It why the Father put His Spirit in the Son of man's earthen body of death so that we can see the invisible hand of God .

Jesus who refused to stand in the Holy place of faith as the one Good Master . He replied; Not My will Father but yours .

Jesus did not do the will of the flesh he therefore remained without sin. A living parable and like all parables . use the then things seen the temporal, to give us His unseen understanding.

No such thing as sign gifts.

Look at me you will surely not die. Just look at me and live..

Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Spiritual gifts yes they all remain.

No, you have not refuted ANYTHING really. Only in your own mind. Again your pride has you thinking that the gifts of the Holy Spirit were started in 1904 at Azuza street. WRONG! it was started in the Book of Acts chapter 2. And taught by Paul in 1Corinthians chapters 12-14. KNOWN as the GIfts of the Holy Spirit. The Bible is not a Perfect The word of God is.

And actually, I do like you, I do not like your scoffing and mocking and lambasting of those who disagree with and you have a very bad habit of doing. And you have not been banned. it is not personal you make it that way. Maybe you should go back AND look at your comments when someone speaks about their experience with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

You can not argue away the context of 1cor Chapter 12-14 in context to the Gifts of the Holy Spirit being for today.

NIMROD has nothing to do with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit You have been shown that in the word of God repeatedly. Yet you try to interject that false context. Peter Reifrimed Joel 2. You were shown that Biblically. YOU do not accept that.

Highjack this thread me? You did that. And Jesus said "you will receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you" Acts 1:8
Mark 16 Jesus said They would speak in tongues.

Hey gut the thread is
"The Purpose of Speaking in Tongues"

You are displaying behavior that is not to the glory of God. You are not speaking sound doctrine nor are you defending it.

You have not shown in the word of God where it says " The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not for today."

You have not shown in the Word of God where the gifts of the Holy Spirit have ceased.

You have taken out of context 1cor 13:8-10 to suggest the Bible is that which has come so the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are no longer needed. That is untruth nor it that Biblical.

You have lied and a very prideful person. Rember you have said you have never been corrected in the word of God.

I suppose this is all anyone can expect from you. Fragments of thoughts and scripture that are not put into any meaningful form. It is completely off the wall to claim that Nimrod and the first appearance of tongues as languages are not related to what is evident in Corinth or at Pentecost. It is simply denying the whole of the bible as truth.

You confuse the perfect of 1 Cor 13:10 as perfect in the English sense of without fault or flaw. In the context of 1 Cor 13:10 perfect is complete as in the completed revelation from God. The bible was not completed until Rev 22:23.

You are the one with a pride problem and you continue to make it worse. You continue to deny the word of God. As long as you respond against the word of God in such a visceral form I will continue to hope that God will give you are heart fit for repentance.

You are blinded by your hatred for me and your heart cannot receive the word of God in that condition.

not at all, I think many here are fully understanding the Biblical context of 1cor chapters 12 through 14 of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. :)
The meaningful form? If you mean it has to agree with your understanding, well, that is just arrogance on your part.

No the context of the Genesis account of the Tower of babel remains in Genesis.

Has absolutely nothing to do with the gifts of the Holy Spirit that Paul is speaking about in 1cor chapters 12 through 14. You have been shown that many times, yet in this thread, you again bring up this Biblical account as in some way to discredit tongues in 1cor 12. If you do not know contextually Gen 11: 1-9 has nothing to do with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit spoken in 1cor chapter 12 through 14 You are unlearned.

Secondly: 1cor 13:8-10

the word perfect in its self without the other words in the passages do not provide the full meaning. Here too you fall short in understanding this. And the completion of the BIBLE is not what 1cor 13:8-10 is speaking of, this understanding is not true.

No, I am not denying the word of God, just yours. Your holier then thou attitude is most taxing, and I do not hate you :). I do not think of you as that important to allow my self to be sucked up in hating you.

You just hate when people don't accept you as a real teacher of God's word. As you have said many times you have never been corrected in the word of God. That makes you an untruthful person.

thinking that the gifts of the Holy Spirit were started in 1904 at Azuza street.
Only the concept of modern tongues-speech - started out as being understood as xenoglossy, but when the ensuing missionary work soon proved an epic fail with respect to "tongues", the doctrine started to be redefined (and was subsequently completely redefined between 1906 and 1907) as 'prayer language'.

You're mixing up unrelated issues. It's little wonder most people don't bother reading your posts.

can anyone explain the one that "interprets" the message? is the interpreter the only one that understands the message?
