Necessary?

I read where 30,000,000 people are out of work because their jobs are not deemed necessary by the government.
Also I read that a significant number of the businesses may never open again.
Could this be a way the big guys eliminate some of the competition from the little guys?
If you work in an unnecessary business, would it be wise for you to maybe change careers?
Just some things that come to my mind during these strange times.

Fortunately, I work in an essential business but feel bad about those that loss their jobs. The thing is, the unemployment benefits they will receive along with a $600 a week bonus means that a lot of displaced workers will be making a lot more on unemployment than they would had they not lost their jobs.

Ohio has a rule that states that if a business recalls a worker and the worker refuses to go back they will lose their unemployment, otherwise there would be no immediate incentive to go back to work.

Of course, the unemployment benefit will eventually run out and if you wait until it expires a prospective employer will be asking what have they been doing to find work during all of the time that they were out of work. If you wait until the benefit dries up you may find the employment prospects slim to none.

Many family units will be ruined financially because the government dictated who can work and who cannot work, regardless of the health risks in each individual community. Potentially save a life but actually destroy a family in the process. The whole coronavirus thing is an exercise in political correctness in regards to health. It sounds good but little or no benefit is derived compared to the damage and disruption caused by government interference in our lives.

Hello @DWR, it looks like many (most?) of the "unnecessary" businesses will be back up and running this month, with new Coronavirus protections in place, of course. Hopefully we will not have an outbreak of new COVID-19 cases as a result of opening things up, as that would probably force us to close things up again, as well as return us to an aggressive form of home sheltering (which is what happened in Japan when they first opened things up, a bit too quickly, I am told).

I think that this is something that we should all be praying about.

I agree. My wife pray everyday for those affected and protection for those caring for the sick.

The United States is much less free than it used to be during my lifetime. It is the government that decides what the new normal is at any given time and that is very much an abnormal process. It is all about power and control and always has been.

I live in Canada, but its much the same here as it is in most US states. The government has decided which businesses are essential and which are not, and it really bothers me.

I've experienced job loss, and it can be devastating. Beyond the obvious economic impact, people lose their identity and feeling of self worth. You don't need a PHD in the Social Sciences to undertand why unemployment can lead to depression, fear and anger. It puts people at greater risk of depression which can lead to alcohol and substance abuse, spousal and child abuse....suicide.

Christians know that regardless of our employment status, that through Jesus' loving sacrifice, that we are absolutely essential, and that is a comfort.

My heart goes out to everyone who's seen their livelihood tossed under the bus in the fight against the mostly benign coronavirus. And to see all the messaging about how much people love essential workers, especially health care workers, and how that might make an unemployed person feel.

I want everyone to know that Jesus views them as absolutely essential, every bit as essential as a health care worker or first responder.

I agree with everything that you say except that coronavirus is not one bit benign. Apart from those dead and seriously ill from it there are an unknown number of people round the world who have had it with little personal effect but are carrying it and risk spreading it to others they come in contact with who may not be so fortunate.

I did not say completely benign, just mostly. Over 99% of those who get it are recovering. It's hard to get an exact handle on it because there are so many people walking around infected who don't even know they have it because its not making them sick. Testing levels are still so low in most places, in Canada we've only tested about 40K per 1 million of population, so for every 40,000 who've been tested 960,000 have not.

Obviously the risks are different depending on the individual. A person under 60 who's otherwise healthy is at greater risk of dying in a car accident. An 85 year old in a nursing home with diabetes and heart diesease taking 10+ medications every day doesn't have much chance at all I don't think.

Yes, I think all this craziness comes from greed and an evil political agenda all over the world. It has caused much suffering, especially in poor countries.

I have seen the loss of freedom in the US continue over the last decades. The people have grown more afraid of the government or those in power and those in power have gained more power. It is very striking when you don't live there but only return now and again.

When government says restaraunts can't open, that hair salons must close, that dog groomers and estheticians are required to shut down....If it wasn't government forcing businesses to close and put people out of work why did a barber in Michigan have to go to court to re-open his shop?

I have seen the loss of freedom in the US continue over the last decades. The people have grown more afraid of the government or those in power and those in power have gained more power. It is very striking when you don't live there but only return now and again.

It's a reminder of the importance of remembering to pray daily for spiritual revival to take place throughout the USA and the world! The history of Israel demonstrates how things always go well when people are following God better. And always - things get worse the more people turn away from God.

Yes, so unreasonable! Time to pray hard for the USA to have a great spiritual revival - to not only improve the spiritual condition of the USA, but also improve other things about how things go here in the USA!
