I think we often mix the idea of forgiving others with
putting away our own bitterness of heart and our seeking wrath (payback)

That is our sin, that needs to be repented of, not theirs.

Are you holding something against someone that you should not?
Have they repented from the heart and changed their behavior?
A they doing it in ignorance and not all that mature yet to deal with it?
Have you called them to repentance?
Have you called them to repentance?
Have you followed Gods commands on how to do just that?

Out forgiving God is when forgiveness becomes tolerance of sin.
It is from a lack of love not an overflow.
The Church was reprimanded for this very thing in the bible.

Good or Bad intentioned rebellion against Gods and His way is not what you forgive, it is what you call to repentance.

IF there is repentance you have won your brother or sister.
IF there is not the scriptures instruct us what to do next.

Clearly their are times to NOT forgive in the scriptures.
Deuteronomy 29:19-20
Jeremiah 18:23
Luke 12;10
John 20:23
1 John 5:16

Come at it with Gods heart looking to forgive.
Seek to make the opportunity for forgiveness and the restoration of fellowship if it does not exist by calling people to repentance.
Do not tolerate and embrace sin in the process.

Gods way is a narrow path with error on the right and on the left.
If you cant see both errors is it because you are standing in one.
The error of not forgiving or not seeking to forgive and not dying to call people to repentance
The error of "forgiving" as tolerance and embrace of sin with a smile. I may look "Good" but it is just as much Satans work as bitterness of heart.
Both errors are rebellion against God and his heart that He has shown you in Christ Jesus.

It seem we are delving into some kind of doctrine not found in the Word. "Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors." When I repeat the prayer given by Jesus_Yeshua, I do consider ever phrase and every word with allo the gravity of each. d

Believe we cannot forgive is believing we cannot be forgiven. I gladly forgive all extending what mercy is given me to extend. Otherwise I am never to be forgiven. Follow the Example Who forgave even those who tortured Him............. I know you are given to do so.
Jesus knew that Judas was a thief, yet he still put him in charge of the offering. Would you recommend your pastor put a thief in charge of the offering?

Jesus knew that Judas would betray him, yet he still had him as a companion. Would you keep Judas as your companion?

God forgives us and remembers our sins no more. Are you able to do this?

Are you also able to do the following:

Luke 6:29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.
30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back.

You are asking for my shoes sthat you may walk in them. No man or woman is capable of walking in the shoes of another, yet we are to imitat our Savior. If you knew the walk of others you would be overwhelmed, just as if others knew your s.

Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; ... - 2 Cor 5:16
We should recognize each other by the spirit of Christ we see in them!
Honor that when you see it and let that give weight to their testimony in our eyes.
If your His and you see it you best start assuming the best of that person and what they bring.
If you cant that is you.
If you do not agree then you take it to God for his testimony.
Let God defend you and your thinking to you, if it is to be defended.
Then when you have your answer come back and share it in His Spirit.
The Spiritual man or woman will recognize it as being from God and receive your testimony and the cycle repeats itself.
It is when we take up our own defense against someone who we clearly recognize God in out of our own sin or fears or insecurities or adequateness that we fail in regards to unity in the Spirit.

If you fail to take it to God first Christian you may find yourself fighting again God.

What are the limits of forgiveness?

The bible says if we want to be forgiven then we must forgive. So it is pretty simple to determine limitations with this in mind.
Naturally the limits of forgiveness we have towards others are the limits of forgiveness God has towards us. It has limit based on how forgiving we are.
