I refuse your reason. The Church is found in Matthew 16 and 18, and Christ's BODY in John Chapter 2 already. Added to this, the word "Disciples" is strewn throughout the gospels AND ACTS. If "disciples" are believers in the Acts, they are believers in the whole New Testament. "Disciples" are always in OPPOSITION and CONTRAST to the Jews and the Gentiles. In John 20 they are called "MY (Christ's) BRETHREN". One cannot be a brother of Jesus Christ without being born from the same Father. Likewise, the so-called "Sermon on the Mount" at the very beginning of the gospels (Matt.5, 6 & 7), it is "OUR Father", "MY Father" and "YOUR Father", indicating that the rebirth was an accomplished fact already.
luke 8 .21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

Well, what about if it was put this way-

One time event of indwelling for receiving eternal life..

Then the Holy Spirit empowered believers in churches in another role.. eg. 'in the midst' 'upon'

The empowerment not necessary as part of eternal life but part of the Holy Spirit blessing a believer
which happens at the same time. 1cor 12.13

There's no ' church , the one body until the Holy Spirit starts placing people into his body .
37¶In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

38He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) John 7 .

13For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Galatians 5 :17 tells us that the flesh is at war with the Spirit & the Spirit with the flesh.

Romans 7 14-25 talks in detail about the struggle we have.

Are you more like Peter BEFORE he received the Holy Ghost... or AFTER? Do you really know what the difference is? (can you verbalize it?) And do you have the same thing Peter has? Would you have the courage to admit it if you don't?

Love in Jesus,
Kelby
I hope my head never get so big that I equivocate myself with (Simon) Peter. At the Pentacost celebration there may have 1,000's of people. Although he was at least partially under the influence of the Holy Spirit he managed to speak boldly and quite bravely to the Antichristian authorities like the Sanhedrin at many occasions afterwards. I wish I was that bold, for the Lord.

Acts 2.. the Holy Spirit coming upon the disciples

Mathew 18.. the Holy Spirit being in the midst of 2 or 3 believers resolving sin issues

OT ... the Holy Spirit empowering the position of the king over Israel

Although the OT case.. they were not necessarily believers, but the position they were in was blessed by God

How does the Holy Spirit come UPON someone when he resides inside the believer. Unlike the OT when the HS would only come UPON someone?

John 7:39

“(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”

Acts 11
15And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

16Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

17Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

18¶When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Hi All. Thanks for posting on the thread. I stayed away from contributing further because I sometimes question my motives and/or the benefits of saying what I'm thinking. Plus it didn't seem like anyone was asking me a direct question. :)

I put the question out there because some people (it seems MANY people) both in and out of the church don't really know what/who the Holy Ghost is, or exactly what happens when (if ever) it is received or how to actually use (function in it) once the Holy Ghost is received. I figured asking about Peter might have some people questioning what can/can't be done before the Holy Ghost is given to a believer... and that beginning to question might cause those individuals to ask GOD for the answers... allowing Him an opportunity to move in their lives.

I figured Peter was a good example because he was operating in faith and accomplishing much BEFORE he received the Holy Ghost...which is further proof that even working miracles isn't proof of the indwelling of the Holy Ghost... just a proof of faith and lining up with portions of the scriptures.

Here's a few questions I'll pose to any interested (preferably honest and honorable) parties:

Do you KNOW how to tell if a person has or doesn't have the Holy Ghost?

If you think you KNOW... can you honestly and solidly determine who in your own church HAS the Holy Spirit vs. those who do NOT have the Holy Spirit? (Ponder that one a bit before answering because you should be clear and solid in your answer.)

And if you think that you (or any person) CAN'T KNOW who has the Holy Ghost in your own church, doesn't that leave you quite vulnerable when any of them speak? (because that would apply to your pastor, too)

Love in Jesus,
Kelby

Ultimately we can judge by what is said and taught from the bible. Thats the standard. Who or who isn't saved thats another matter .

When does the new testament begin ?
Well, "New Testament" is a man-given designation. But may I answer from scripture?

John 1:17: "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ."

Matthew 11:13: "For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John."

Luke 16:16: "The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it."

You don't agree with Hebrews 9:16?

For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

luke 8 .21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.
That seems to prove my doctrine. I've probably missed your point because you never got to it. One-liners brother .... hard.

The grammar got you brother. There is no problem for me, in my closet, praying alone, to say "OUR Father". The Assembly hall burnt down last night, one of the Elders was found in adultery and a false teacher caused unrest in the Assembly. Shall I not pray "OUR Father . ?" A great famine was in Jerusalem, and the Church needed help. I think "OUR Father ... ", is very appropriate.

You are entitled to fire question after question as an answer. But so am I. I will answer you anon about John 7:39 (I have done so in an earlier posting but I'll do it again) if you answer me this. Our Lord Jesus was slain in around 30 AD! How come scripture says that He was slain "from the foundation of the world" (Rev.13:8)?

When you have thought about that, and answered appropriately, you can think about this. When was our Lord Jesus glorified?

4 "I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was"
(John 17:4-5)

Was He glorified;
  1. before the world began?
  2. during His ministry before death?
  3. in resurrection?
  4. in His sitting down at the right hand of God in His throne?
  5. at His coronation in Revelation 4 and 5?
  6. when the kingdoms of the world became His (Dan.7:13-14; Rev:11)?
The questions recognize and admit your point in John.7:39.

There's no ' regeneration ' there . Just the ones that follow Jesus and what he says .

You left off the last part. It is biblically correct.

For the cause of Christ
Roger
That's just it. You did not even address the Bible. You gave an unsupported opinion. And you did not enter into one of my arguments with a sustained logical exegesis.

You gave an opinion. I honored that with a reply. Maybe you could now show us what is Biblically correct by exegesis, and where my arguments fail. Until then, you remain an esteemed brother who said nothing.

Brother, "regeneration" appears twice in the Bible, and is not in any scripture we are discussing. Would you like to reconsider?
