Christian meditation is being attentive to God. To meditate properly our souls must reflect upon what our minds have ingested. Meditation is making ourselves aware of the glory and majesty of the Lord.

Eastern type mediation, and even meditation as health practitioners prescribe, is to be avoided. They have given true mediation a bad name.

When we meditate on scripture verses that scripture penetrates our soul.

Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success”

Ps. 119:15 “I will meditate on your precepts, and fix my eyes on your ways

If you cannot sleep, use your awake time to meditate on the works of the Lord.

Ps. 63:6 “when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night”

Use visualization as you read the word and as you pray. Hear the word spoken to you, feel the effects of the word, imagine using your taste and smell as you read, create the scene in your imagination. Become an intimate part of the word, make it personal.

Ps. 63:6 “when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night”

What are the watches of the night?
In the apocrypha, especially Enoch, is an explanation of angels. They say there are three classes of angels and one class is watchers that watch over us and constantly travel between earth and God. These are called the watchers.

In scripture that is approved, in order to check if this is true or not, the watchers are only spoken of three times, they are in the visions of Nickodemus. However there are numerous time we are told in scripture that the Lord watches over us and knows all.

In Genesis 12:28 we are told that Jacob saw a ladder between heaven and earth with angels going between, and perhaps these are a vision of these watchers.

Some things may seem to add up or even do add up with scripture in Book of Enoch, however I'd caution against these Book of Enoch versions that are out there. Not even sure about if the ethiopian Ge'ez always is very reliable.

What are the watches of the night?
the watches of the night were periods of time, during which a watch or guard was kept, into which the night was divided by the Jews and Romans. They were like shifts that guards took to make sure their city wasn't being invaded secretly at night. The 4th watch, for example, was from 3-6 AM.
