Background Story

Very Early Saturday morning, February 26, Lanie Ann was diagnosed with a small tumor in the back of her brain at Children's Mercy Hospital in. Following a lumbar puncture, we found out the tumor was spreading seeds throughout her spinal fluid and brain casing. Family and friends immediately began praying to God for healing and guidance. We were uncomfortable with the Neurosurgeon at Children's Mercy for a reason we couldn't quite put our finger on. Soon God moved two different people to mention to us about going to St. Judes. We were clueless, but felt the leading of the Holy Spirit. On Wednesday we suggested going to St. Judes and our doctor said that he would make the call. So on Saturday Lanie and I were flown to LeBonheur Children's Hospital, where the resection of the tumors take place. On the flight the nurses asked who our doctor would be when we got to LeBonheurs. I told them Dr. Boop. They began to tell me that he was the best. People come from all over the world for him to operate on their children. Also, they said, "Miracles happen with Dr. Boop and St. Judes." On Monday, March 7, Dr. Boop successfully extracted the tumor. Praise the Lord! The pathologists have reviewed the tissues from the tumor to determine that Lanie had a Medulloblastoma tumor. The surgery was one of many mountains we will have to scale to get to healing. Dr. Boop mentioned that Lanie was doing great and that we might get to go home on Friday. Five days after surgery!? We weren't ready. Lanie was still out of it from the surgery, her speech was slow to come back, she was very cranky, she continued to vomit, and she lost her sense of balance. Saturday, March 12 was Lanie's 2nd birthday. Family came in, but Lanie was exhausted very quickly. It was even more of a sign that there was no way we could make a 7 hour trip home to Missouri. The next week Lanie continued to vomit. The doctors were afraid it was because of her brain swelling, but each test they did showed very little swelling. By Thursday of that week we had been at LeBonheurs for 13 days. We were getting anxious to get home, but Lanie kept throwing up and was very weak. Again by the leading of the Holy Spirit, we realized there was a reason we weren't able to go home. We felt God leading us to stay to do chemotherapy treatments at St. Judes. So here we are. We have six months of chemotherapy. Then we will go home and do six months of oral chemotherapy. Radiation is not done on children under three. So if the chemotherapy doesn't rid Lanie's spinal fluid of the abnormal cells, then at some point after she is three, we could have to do radiation. We believe God has the power to immediately heal her, but if he chooses to walk us through each of the steps to heal her, then he will continue to carry us and we will continue to praise Him for his wonderful deeds.
Right now
Everyday is a blessing...even in the midst of devestating news. Lanie's cancer is finding it's resting place in the leptomeninges. These are two thin membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The doctors have said that chemotherapy will not cure Lanie from the cancer in these areas because there is no drug that can penetrate those membranes efficiently to kill the cancer cells. However, chemotherapy is our only option right now. We are hoping that God will use chemotherapy to stop the cancer from progressing to buy us some time. Radiation could be an option in the future. It is not right now because in young children it causes severe mental retardation. We are praying that God will heal our precious Lanie.
We continue to covet your prayers for Lanie's healing.

Lord I lift up little Lanie to you, and also her family...that you would carry them all through this difficult time. Lord you are the Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counselor, Healer. May your Love cover little Lanie, & may your Healing touch be upon her life. In Jesus name I pray...please read Psalms 126:v-6

Lanie is in my daily prayers in Jesus Christ is Lord for a whole and miracle healing.
Praying also that you and your family to recieve the streangth, comfort and joy in Jesus during this time. :)
We thankyou Jesus! We thankyou Father for your perfect and loving care.

Please keep us updated if you can. :)

Dear Sister, I was a child who was not supposed to survive. I fell out of a speeding car when I was 5 years old and broke open the frontal lobe skull of my skull. The ambulance drivers would not even transport me. They said I would be dead before I got there.

My parents drove me. The doctors did what they could do, but they also gave me little chance of survival.

I lived in a small town in Pennsylvania. My grandpa was a Minister. I am sure many were praying for this little boy. I am now 60 years old and complaining of my aches and pains.

Miricles happen. If God chooses to take your child home with Him though, even this will be because the child was just too special too live down here, and God wanted this special child in heaven right away.

I pray that God will heal your child quickly and completely, in Jesus name, Amen
If God takes His child home, it is because their is no one else could take that place in heaven.

God is always with us in the sweet moments and the moments that try our souls.

May God bless and comfort all those who care for this child, in Jesus name, Amen.

Love in Jesus
brother Gary

Update on Lanie

Wow! It's already Thursday evening! Where has this week gone. I think it is the first week that didn't feel like a year. Lanie was discharged on Tuesday afternoon after twenty-four hours of post chemo hydration. Everyday this week we have all napped when Lanie napped. It has been exhausting; especially because Lanie is up a lot at night. Her back molars are coming in and causing lots of pain. Teething! Yuck! Lanie was a pro at chemo this time. She flew right through the treatments with only some diarrhea and vomiting. The physcial therapist and occupational therapist have been so amazed by Lanie's improvements. Especially the fact that she has motivation to move and play. In the past, Lanie would go to therapy and just sit and cry like we were torturing her. Not any more. Praise the Lord.

Right now we are watching for Lanie's counts to drop, and so we are being careful to keep everything clean and keep away from sick people. June 27th is Lanie's next MRI. This will tell us how the cancer has fended for itself during this month. We have learned or realized that our hope and trust is not in the chemo. Our hope and trust is in the Lord. If he chooses to get rid of the cancer using only his hand. Praise the Lord! If God chooses to use the chemo to get rid of the cancer in Lanie's body. Praise the Lord still! And so we wait on the Lord. Words can't describe how hard this wait is. The future is very unclear, but isn't that what faith is...Being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Hebrews 12:1)?

God is too wise to be mistaken.

God is too wise to be mistaken.

Matt 9:22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

Matt 15:28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Tonight we are back in the hospital. Lanie has been quite fussy the last two days and has not been sleeping very well. Lanie's counts are low and she has been running a low grade fever so we have been admitted. We will be in the hospital until her coun...ts come back up or the doctor determines that Lanie has no infection and her fever subsides. So, while we enjoyed the three days out of the hospital this week we know this is the safest place for Lanie to be while her body recuperates. Hopefully we will be back at the Target House early next week. It has been difficult to see Lanie kind of take a step back as the week has went along. As her counts have dropped she is alot more cranky and is not as playful. She is not eating very much and she is having a hard time getting rest both at night and naptime during the day. The chemo is making her throw up alot as well and all of this is wearing on not only Lanie, but mommy and daddy too. We are trying to stay strong and positive through everything. Some days are definitely easier than others. Today as we were being admitted our nurse visited with us and went over the usual medications. She took Lanie's blood pressure and temperature and finished getting the room ready for our stay. She visited with me for a few minutes about where we were from and asked about how our treatment was going. I explained a few things to her and she told me that she remembered us from ICU a few weeks ago. Then she asked if it would be alright if she could pray for Lanie. I tell you this because I know that there are thousands praying for Lanie everyday. As I stood in that hospital room crying as this nurse prayed for Lanie and her healing I was comforted to know that thousands of people are praying for her everyday. Sometimes as we go through our day of throwing up and crying and medicine and doctor visits I forget to thank God for all the people who are praying for us. Some days are defintely harder than others but God continues to show us His love through each one who is lifting our family up in prayer. "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." Mark 11:24 God we thank you for hearing and answering our prayers

Thankyou for the update, Lanie and family continue to be in daily prayers in Jesus.

Hugs and God bless.

"...a large crowd followed him, and he healed ALL who were ill" (Matthew 12:15). Each day Lanie is being healed. She is still very sick. Her counts are staying at zero, her appetite is waning, her teeth are hurting even worse and her crankiness continues. However (Praise the Lord!!!) Day 2 without any throw ups!! She wore the same clothes all day. Well except for the pants that she was wearing when she peed out at nap time. Ha!
I just finished reading an article on St. Judes's website about brain tumors and the newest research on medulloblastoma. The main researcher said, “My ambition when I was at medical school was to cure at least two of the top brain tumors in kids—that remains my goal,” he says. “It’s not an unrealistic pipe dream. We have great science and a great clinic right at each other’s doorstep, and they interact beautifully. I could not do this science anywhere else in the world. Thanks to the terrific and unique environment at St. Jude, I’m beginning to believe that we will someday do it.” Maybe God will use him to find a cure for our Lanie (or it would be fine if God just laid his healing hand on her :).

Update on Baby Lanie

Are we living as if we are more than conquerors? Romans 8:37 reminded me today..in all these things (trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, or danger or sword) we are MORE than conquerors through him who loved us. Beth Moore in her Believing God study points out that most of us don't live as more than conquerors. We are living in mediocrity or even defeat. I realized today that most days I feel very defeated. We are to the point of exhaustion. It is even more emotional as family members come and go. Sleep is becoming far and few in between. Lanie is awak lots in the night. She is very uncomfortable at night. We are still trying to figure that out. Lanie was released from the hospital on Thursday with her ANC count at 200, which is still rather low, but since we had been in there a week, the Lord had mercy on us and gave her some cells so we could get out of there. On Friday her counts were already up to 1,900. They will only go up from there. Lanie is feeling really good during the day. Her mobility is getting more and more. She is beginning to crawl less and choosing to walk more. However now she tries to shrug off any help when she is walking, but she is just too shaky to walk independently. As Lanie continues to get stronger, we will spend the week at appointments and finding fun things to do in the area, before we begin the chemo again at the beginning of July.

This week I have felt very defeated. Satan loves to haunt my mind with the discouraging words of the doctors from the last MRI, but God continues to remind me that He is in control. To just wait. (easier said than done). We are choosing to live as more than conquerors of this cancer. Because our God is definitely bigger than this cancer!

Thankyou so much for the update and word of streangth and faith. :)
I continue to keep Lanie and family in my daily prayers in Jesus.

Hugs and God bless.
