Background Story
Very Early Saturday morning, February 26, Lanie Ann was diagnosed with a small tumor in the back of her brain at Children's Mercy Hospital in. Following a lumbar puncture, we found out the tumor was spreading seeds throughout her spinal fluid and brain casing. Family and friends immediately began praying to God for healing and guidance. We were uncomfortable with the Neurosurgeon at Children's Mercy for a reason we couldn't quite put our finger on. Soon God moved two different people to mention to us about going to St. Judes. We were clueless, but felt the leading of the Holy Spirit. On Wednesday we suggested going to St. Judes and our doctor said that he would make the call. So on Saturday Lanie and I were flown to LeBonheur Children's Hospital, where the resection of the tumors take place. On the flight the nurses asked who our doctor would be when we got to LeBonheurs. I told them Dr. Boop. They began to tell me that he was the best. People come from all over the world for him to operate on their children. Also, they said, "Miracles happen with Dr. Boop and St. Judes." On Monday, March 7, Dr. Boop successfully extracted the tumor. Praise the Lord! The pathologists have reviewed the tissues from the tumor to determine that Lanie had a Medulloblastoma tumor. The surgery was one of many mountains we will have to scale to get to healing. Dr. Boop mentioned that Lanie was doing great and that we might get to go home on Friday. Five days after surgery!? We weren't ready. Lanie was still out of it from the surgery, her speech was slow to come back, she was very cranky, she continued to vomit, and she lost her sense of balance. Saturday, March 12 was Lanie's 2nd birthday. Family came in, but Lanie was exhausted very quickly. It was even more of a sign that there was no way we could make a 7 hour trip home to Missouri. The next week Lanie continued to vomit. The doctors were afraid it was because of her brain swelling, but each test they did showed very little swelling. By Thursday of that week we had been at LeBonheurs for 13 days. We were getting anxious to get home, but Lanie kept throwing up and was very weak. Again by the leading of the Holy Spirit, we realized there was a reason we weren't able to go home. We felt God leading us to stay to do chemotherapy treatments at St. Judes. So here we are. We have six months of chemotherapy. Then we will go home and do six months of oral chemotherapy. Radiation is not done on children under three. So if the chemotherapy doesn't rid Lanie's spinal fluid of the abnormal cells, then at some point after she is three, we could have to do radiation. We believe God has the power to immediately heal her, but if he chooses to walk us through each of the steps to heal her, then he will continue to carry us and we will continue to praise Him for his wonderful deeds.
Right now
Everyday is a blessing...even in the midst of devestating news. Lanie's cancer is finding it's resting place in the leptomeninges. These are two thin membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The doctors have said that chemotherapy will not cure Lanie from the cancer in these areas because there is no drug that can penetrate those membranes efficiently to kill the cancer cells. However, chemotherapy is our only option right now. We are hoping that God will use chemotherapy to stop the cancer from progressing to buy us some time. Radiation could be an option in the future. It is not right now because in young children it causes severe mental retardation. We are praying that God will heal our precious Lanie.
We continue to covet your prayers for Lanie's healing.
