Buying some books tomorrow. I wonder if anybody has read Dante's inferno, and if it is even readable to common folks. Also considering a book about Maria Magdalena, that is 550 pages. The apokraphic texts that are precursors to the bible, and the apostles fathers, about the ones who carried on the torch from the original apostles. And a bunch others, some for me to read, some as gifts. I would like a good recommendation on ignatiuos and polycarp. And also about mindfulness and meditation within the search for more knowledge. For a biblenovice of sorts. Locked down a book about fitting the bible into a historical context with archeology, timeline events accepted as truths by science and the revolving kings, reading the bible chronological.

Figure I just buy a bible that is readable, with modern lingo, and turns out there are a bunch of books at 40% discount, that I want to read. So I might as well get them now before they are full price, might as well get 10 books for the price of 6 when I in time will get them all, and will get a book for a birthday coming up and a few christmaspresents, and be done with that already. The point here is the texts before the bible and right after. Very nice with suggestions about books 1 000 years later, but not for now. Mainly about before the bible and the following after the bible, and that times contemporary figures stories that have not been covered well enough.

wow thats good 40% off books stock up!

I dont know what to recommend you as there are so many, but for a Bible novice I found The Bible for Dummies very good at explaining the background behind the Bible.

A book with pictures/photographs like Eyewitness Bible Lands is good.

Very, very funny as always. Please stop confirming the stereotype about how christians sold their funnybone for salvation. Thanks for nothing as always, please refrain from commenting more. Let it be a suggestionthread for others, even though I did not get a suggestion this time. Unless someone suggests something the next few hours before I put in an order.

OK, first order was a studentbible, the newest translation. A chronological guidebook written by a theologue, in the wrong denomination. A book called big magic. Faith for a time like this, about how the world is messed up, and has deleted much of the bible in the statechurch. How do we keep faithful to God in this world, where we are persecuted. A 365 studybook by Jonathan Cahn, focusing on a new mystery each day.

The hunt for a different kind of wealth, a book about Frans of Assis life and pilgrimage. A woman writer trekking through the middle east in his footsteps. This one seems very interesting. Anf finally a book about what Jesus spoke to the people on the mountain or public pulpit if you will. About how he pointed to God, but people missed that. Saving that one for later.

20 books left on the list. Must narrow it down to 5. Thanks a lot for all the advice.

Actually... that WAS her trying to be helpful.

Her comment didn't exactly help with what you asked, but she did try. You just blasted somebody who tried to help you.

I mean... I'm the LAST forum member who would defend Lanolin, but even I can see she was trying to help, in her way.

Sorry, we go ways back, not gonna lie and pretend that it was helpful to tell me to buy a bible for dummies. An insult is an insult. The nick knows where I am at in the theology, do not like my view on christianity or me, and know I am way past that type of book. We have discussed plenty of bibleverses over time, so knows that I have covered the word of God initially, and gone through the books I think is most important. Know the jesus stories, but have only been told about it and seen movies/documentaries about it, and saving that part for christmas. And I was very specific about the types of book I was thinking of buying, and clearly stated that I was going to get the real bible in a newer version, and read it all. And more, no asking for a pamflet of the bible, leaving out inconvenient details, that allow people to call themselves christians while violating the word.

1. Suggestions of texts before Christ, that is precursors to the new testament, like some jewish texts that is suggested

2. Casespecifics books elaborating on certain apostles/events in Jesus contemporary times, deepdives into certain books. Or meshing historic events/archeology/rulers into the bibletales, for a greater understanding

3. The books of the apostles of the apostles, and carrying on the work.

That is what I asked for, if any had good suggestions, before I bought the bulk of the books now, and spent 300 dollars.

1. You haven't even BEEN here long enough to go way back with anybody... unless you know Lanolin on a different forum.

2. You have said you are relatively new to Christianity. Bible for dummies seems like a perfect suggestion for learning some things in an easy-to-grasp manner.

3. You have already demonstrated multiple times in multiple other threads that when you are determined to be offended you WILL be offended and nobody can say anything to dissuade you from being offended... so I don't know why I'm wasting my time making this post.

Go be offended and have fun with it, I guess.

1. I have been here 2 months, and Lanlin have replied to me a in almost every single thread I have engaged in or made. I have never been shy about my faith, so believe me, Lanolin knows my faith. And yes, also engaged with Lanolin on other forums, that nick is all over the place on forums.

2. Read my OP again, I was specific about what I was looking to get. If you ever was thinking of helping, instead of trying to create a pointless conflict. Do you have a suggestion? If not, create a conflict somewhere else, where you may succeed. This thread is for suggestions on the type of books I laid out in the OP. I still have a last order to make.

3. You do not know what offended means. Make another thread about that topic, and I can reply. Not joining you in argument that is off topic. Go away and stop wasting my time, if you are not going to reply to the OP, as you say is wasting your own time. Not very christian to spam a bookreading thread for christian literature. So obviously I cannot go with any suggestions you might have. And look forward to biblediscussions in 1 week after I have read some in the new books. Guess I better buy a book about conversations, since that seems to be a lost art that few master theese days.

I have ended it now. theese books are enough for now. This thread is now about bookrecommendations in general for new christians who want to start at the right place. Or a new deepdive for old christians. I should have ordered 2 other books that I advice you all to get. One putting it into the context of the rulers of the time, that historians agree with. And one about meshing it with historical accounts and archeology.

If anybody disagrees with anothers faith, why not try to advice on good books to change the views, instead of argue? And pivot of subject? It just fortifies that they are correct, and is counterproductive. So if somebody thinks I am on a wrong path, no pressure on time to buy books anymore. And otherwise you may nudge someones else to what you think is right. I was open to add a few books if you guys had suggested them, and made a good case for them. Now you can discuss the bible for dummies too, which is a book erasing all the rules, and is all wrong. No hell, no judgement, no effort. The millivanillibible. Disregard that one people. Get a real bible.

Texts before the Bible, like before Genesis or like just before the new testament since you made a comment elsewhere about wanting to throw the old testament out (which would be like the ultimate text before the new testament to put into context Jesus and his life and work). But as for suggestions:

If you don't know about this website, sounds like you should: https://ccel.org/ CCEL stands for Christian classics ethereal library; it's probably the motherlode of public domain christian classics on the internet.

Personally I'd recommend this book as I found it to be a very modern ancient book: https://smile.amazon.com/We-Dont-Speak-Great-Things/dp/0924722010 which is two of the earliest post- biblical early church texts we have, and I haven't read this one yet but seems like it would be a good primer on the first 1500 or so years of Christianity and its development https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00HUCS...olid=108JAN2SZ6SVU&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

As for archaeological tie ins, I'd recommend checking out the patterns of evidence video series which is based on finding archaeological evidence that supports the story of exodus (since most scholars say it never happened and it's kind of important that it did).

On the lighter side of reading, I can also recommend the 2 historical novels (as accurate historically as he could make them but some parts are interpolated / fictionalized) by Paul L maier: Pontius Pilate and the Flames of Rome (told from the perspective of the mayor of Rome under Nero). They should give you a much better feel for the wider roman world at the time of the gospels and the book of acts.

Hope those help and sorry I missed the thread but I usually stick to singles and only came here because someone made a comment elsewhere and I wanted to see what he was talking about.

Poorly worded, texts before the NT, not before genesis obviously since that is the beginning. Will check out the Paul L Maier book

Genesis is written ABOUT the beginning, but it was not written AT the beginning. There were other books written before it.

You may keep spamming if you like, does not matter to me, I am done buying books now. Is it fun to be pedantic, hellbent on pretending to misunderstand? Mkay. If it is important to you, keep going. Hopefully other people will share some tips with others. Not considering any recommendations from you anyways, so better that you spam instead of suggesting wrongthink books. Happy day.

Way of the Peaceful Warrior. By Dan millman I think. The book didn't talk about a specific faith but certainly opened my eyes to the spiritual. I think it was timely for that point in my life because I needed to open my spirit rather than on Talk religion

Might see the movie, not buying the book. I think I will avoid it, as you seem to want to steer me away from God, as many others. I asked about book recomendations regarding God. Cinder was the only one who attempted to reply, and that was after I had purchased books. The rest just spammed, and you recommend a book that may be good, but does not fit the criteria. So I will most likely not watch that movie even though Nick Nolte plays Socrates which could be interesting, good actor. But I assume this is about secular philosophy and humanism, the opposite of what I asked for. Not turning back to that anymore. So, please suggest books in the coming months on bibletopics, and the historic events in the timeperiod. The beginning, the apostles, Jesus, the political situation before Jesus, the rulers at the time, and the apostles of the apostles. Or modern day apostles. About old school christianity. Not the happy go lucky hippydippy fake christianity.

No wonder people are so reluctant to answer you. Someone does try to help and you virtually excoriate him.

I know, I know, you'll just lambast me now for criticizing you. Poor, pitiful you, everybody always picks on you. *sigh

Thanks btw. Life has made me very thick skinned. When no one shows care, u learn to focus less on others words. I try assume that there is good intentions in hearts. Im not great with words myself.
