How can faith uphold the law?
You are singling out a verse and missing what he’s talking about dear sister

Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law?

of works?

Nay: but by the law of faith.

Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭3:27-31‬ ‭

he’s comparing the law he’s been talking about that does this

“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭3:19-20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

with the law of faith and saying Jesus is the foundation of the law of God the word of faith the gospel provides “ “hear me and live , whoever believes and is baptized shall be saved “

Vs the law of works

“For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven?

Or, Who shall descend into the deep?

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,

and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;

and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭10:3-13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the law of faith is now established apart from the law of works is Paul’s argument ( just my own opinion ) he’s saying “we” Christs witnesses have established the law of faith.

It’s really one of Paul’s main themes in all His epistles of you read the arguments he’s making it’s very repetitive

“For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:10-14‬ ‭

“But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:23-29‬ ‭KJV‬‬

As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭17:4-5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Paul’s revelations were deep
And true regarding the law he understood it well being a Pharisee and Israelite from birth so his revelation of it in his epistles are deep
And true but also why the Pharisees and non believing Jews began trying to kill Paul the The thkngs he was saying about Gods kingdom weren’t from the law of Moses and it enraged them taking away thier power

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28:18-20‬ ‭

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;

but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:15-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“The law and the prophets were until John:

since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭16:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The apostles decided not to include Moses law when they gathered in acts 15 for good reason it contradicts the gospel many times over

I don't see how you can say that because we are saved by faith not works, as this chapter is addressing, that means that it is not true the faith upholds the law. All through the gospels we are told that we show our love for the Lord through obedience--or in other words faith includes faith in Christ's instructions.

There is no law of works. Works are completely separate from salvation. The book of Galatians points this out over and over, but the book of James explains that to love the Lord is to obey Him. The Lord does not look at what we say, the Lord looks at what we do.

“A man…had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ ‘I will not,’ he answered, but later changed his mind and went. Then, the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.” [Jesus asked,] “Which of the two did what his father wanted?” Matthew 21:28-31

This is a long, complicated post, but if I understand it correctly you dispute that Romans 3:31 is speaking of the spirit of the law, so you deny that it means that faith establishes the spirit of the law. If it was speaking of the law of Moses it would say so.

If we look to the gospels to help us understand, the gospels tell us to obey over and over. We are to have faith in all the instructions Christ gives us, Christ outlines for us what it means to be loyal to the kingdom of heaven.

John 14:15 “If you love me, you will obey my commandments".

Romans 3:31 ‘Do we then cancel the law through faith? Absolutely not! On the contrary we uphold the law”

How can faith uphold the law?
Romans 4: 15 "Because the law worketh wrath; for where no law is, there is no transgression.

Adam and Eve were created sinless and with a free will. In the Father's kingdom there is perfect justice and mercy. Creatures with a free will can choose to do God's will and be rewarded or go against God's will and be punished. God let them know that the punishment for eating the fruit of a particular ordinary tree was the knowledge of good and evil which results in death. This knowledge is our conscience and we are all born with it. This conscience that we are born with lets us know right from wrong and we are all under the law. The tendency of mankind is to put what benefits them first even at the expense of someone else, so we are all sinners ( even before the commandments given to Moses).

Perfect justice demands that all be condemned and as an example to other beings of what happens when His laws are violated. If He saves everyone, then there would be lawlessness in heaven since other beings would be tempted to join in. The Father in His mercy decides to save a few throughout the history of mankind.

In order to save the few, the Father sends Jesus ( whose parents are Mary and the Holy Spirit of the Father) to erase the saved's sins. Jesus, full of the Father's Spirit, was perfect in obedience even to the point of death. Jesus allowed Himself to die so that life is owed Him by Father. This life is sprinkled to those that are predestined by the Father. They are the ones that turn to God with repentance and put their trust in the Father's plan to erase their sins by believing that Jesus is life. Still something else has to be done in order to allow humans in heaven. The law can be summarized in two commandments: Love God and Love everyone else. We can't do it on our own, so the Father glorifies Jesus with His Spirit who in turn distributes it to each believer who then become the body of Christ. The Father and Jesus fill the believer's heart with the degree of love necessary to enter heaven as well as knowledge and direction.

You obey the Spirit of the law when all your actions are done with love.

I agree with all this post, but it does not answer the question of how faith establishes the law. I think it does this through that true faith is faith in all Christ instructs us to do, and these things are the spirit of the law.

Hello there!
Romans 3:31 ‘Do we then cancel the law through faith? Absolutely not! On the contrary we uphold the law”
How can faith uphold the law?
The law is established when it serves the purpose for which it was given: Romans 3:20.
There are certain things which the law can do:
Romans 3:20
Romans 7:7-14

There are certain things which the law cannot do:
Romans 8:3
Galatians 2:16
Romans 3:20

The law is established when its penalties are enforced. The Lord Yeshua established the law by
bearing its penalty.
Biblical Christianity is neither legalistic nor lawless. Legalism does not establish the law but
rather it nullifies it. Salvation by grace through FAITH (the true Gospel) establishes the law.

God Bless!

We uphold the law by putting our faith in the One who fulfilled all the righteous requirements of the law on our behalf and who offers us His perfect righteousness as a gift. (Romans 4:5-6) Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. (Romans 10:4)

The law was instructions from God to receive His blessings in the life He created us to live of where He desires a dwelling place. It was man that failed not the law, just as Jesus stated, "the flesh profits nothing"

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Proverbs 1:23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

Psalms 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

Psalms 119:89 For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

Psalms 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

They exalted themselves:

Isaiah 64:7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

Matthew 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

2 Corinthians 3:5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

Yeah I’m not really following your argument . We do Obey we don’t obey Moses we obey Christ and the gospel . The two covenant laws don’t go together Christ is our lawgiver we obey Christ not
Moses and his law of works

“For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:10-12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

That’s true law of works Moses book says “ you must do everything in this book continually or you will Be cursed”

my point to you is Moses book is not our law it doesn’t fit into the new covenant we have a lawgiver that’s Christ not moses

Moses commanded this in dealing with other sinners

“And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.”
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭19:21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

one cannot live under that law and still obey Christ it is contrary christ says the opposite from what Moses says

“But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭6:35-37‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the law of Moses is not our law it’s simple we have a New Testament that says better things. And yes we do
Obey but we obey Christs doctrine. NOt moses it is contrary for A different purpose

we don’t divorce like Moses said because we decide we don’t like the person and then remarry another that’s Old Testament . We are of the gospel divorce for Only one reason and don’t remarry others.

we don’t accuse and stone other sinners that is Old Testament , we have repentance and forgiveness we have don’t condemn and judge and you won’t be condemned and judged , we have forgive and you will be forgiven

it’s just contrary one is not for salvstion one is . One is made to hold guilty all
Sinners , the other is made to put those sinners to death and give them a new life and spirit a new nature as Gods children.

there’s a law Of works it is everything Moses wrote in his book of the law for the children of isreal that is not our law it has nothing to do with faith it was for faithless People without repentance or spiritual birth

we have a covenant law the law of the spirit of Life in Christ , we’ve had the law of imputing sin and death on us removed through baptism into Christs death so we can belong to the gospel apart from Moses law

“Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭7:4-6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the things Jesus said are the law God always promised this example is many years after Moses law was written

Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.

My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭51:4-5‬ ‭

that’s what the ot kept saying the messiah was coming to speak the true law we obey but we obey our covenant law not the old cursed one

We do Obey we don’t obey Moses we obey Christ and the gospel.I see the bad guys do that sometime It was not Moses that gave us the law any more then it was you or me that gave people Jesus.Moses works for god and the law was and is from god.Jesus said he was not their to do away with the law but to fulfill it.Did you know the the bible says that Moses did not tell us the truth?Don't believe everything you read.Point is the law and Moses are not bad guys,,,very silly to say so.I like to go on but i'm getting to wordy.:(

Romans 3:31 ‘Do we then cancel the law through faith? Absolutely not! On the contrary we uphold the law”

How can faith uphold the law?
The law is mainly viewed as the ten commandments which are not exactly hard things to follow it is basic right and wrong things we are taught from an early age you know don't lie don't steal don't kill ect. yet no one is able to completely keep it even as believers we fail in this so what does uphold the law mean if we cannot keep it?

Well consider the word uphold or keep they are both words used to describe following the law but they both do not mean to hold in high esteem they are words meant to be used to not lose or fall away from.
Faith however is an ingredient that was always the most important because even before Jesus though no man could fully keep the law they were in God's favor because of one major thing faith.

we uphold the law with faith not because we perfectly keep it but because our faith in him exceeds the law and we naturally follow the law being spirit lead so honestly why is there even a question to it I never understood the whole law issue some believe in following the law to the point yet lack in the spirit others throw the law away completely and others still see the law as nothing but a chain that was broken

The law is not thrown away and it also does not have power over us it is basic moral it is basic logic of right and wrong

It is by faith that we abide in Christ.

It is this abiding in and having faith in Christ which is the cause of our fruit of obedience. Which is listed in Galatians 5:22-23

It is not faith which causes us to work at the law in our own understanding and strength. That is still a carnal understanding of the law.
Galatians 3:2-3

So then its ok to kill people and be adulterers since we are dead to the Law and alive to Christ? No. Which of the fruit of the Spirit causes killing and adultery?

Calling it the "spirit" of the Law is extremely misleading. The Law commands Work. The Spirit completes this work. Not you nor your carnal desires or will.

Amen ! It's all about Jesus

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

“These are the commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses for the children of Israel in mount Sinai.”
‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭27:34‬ ‭

“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?”
‭‭John‬ ‭7:19‬ ‭

“He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭19:8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭15:24‬ ‭

no one said the law is “ bad “ what’s been said is Moses gave the law and it is not the New Testament , the New Testament is the gospel and Christs word and blood not moses word and animal blood

‭‭John‬ ‭1:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬ Yes it say that,,It is absolutely wrong! if the law was given by Moses. what it's really saying is it from Moses, not from god. no wonder Israel failed. The law was given to Moses by god to give to us or if you like for the Jews and their slaves,,Yes their slaves to.That statement is like saying Paul gave us Jesus but now we grace and truth that is the father.See how the statement is not right?,,,,,peace
