I'm an 80 y.o. man who grew up in a Christian family and church in WV. I professed my faith in 1950 and was then baptized. I am confessional in my beliefs, embracing the confessions coming out of the Protestant Reformation, emphasizing God's sovereign will and denying the Roman Catholic doctrine of 'free will'. My more detailed beliefs are found stated in the First(1646) and Second(1689) London Confessions of the Baptists. My primary study Bible is the KJV but I use most of the more standard translations such as the ASV, RSV, NRSV, REB, etc. I'm not much for opinions but seek understanding from God's word alone by sound principles of interpretation. A verse that is very important to me is by Paul: "Now these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes; that in us ye might learn not to go beyond the things which are written; that no one of you be puffed up for the one against the other." (1Cor 4:6, ASV) I have detailed my beliefs in such detail because when I discuss Bible someone else, I like to know their perspective or approach to the Scriptures so I can understand them better.

I have been trending toward the Berean Study Bible for quite some time now, though NIV and KJV are also go-tos. There are some translations I do not care for at all! Doing comparative readings with others, or even just one other person, while taking turns reading from different translations, makes these differences very apparent. Often newer translations really are watered down as I have seen some members here say.

Welcome to CC, brother Jon. I believe that Salvation is freely available to all who are willing to come by Faith. I agree that it is not by works, but only by the blood. I believe that the call has been sent out to all, but few will heed it and come by faith. I currently have fellowship with a small Mennonite congregation, but the only label that I desire to have is that of a Christian. I like KJV best, for that is what I grew up with. I am always open to discussing my beliefs in a friendly and civilized manner.
